insert pdf into pages

Hey,

I was just wondering whether is was possible to insert PDF's into a Pages document. In my case I have a Project document and I want to include weekly reports which are stored as PDF's.

If I do: Insert > Choose > ...(*) I only seem to be inserting the first page of the PDF

It might be that it's not possible, but it wouldn't seem an unreasonable feature for Pages.

*(may be called slightly different, im using a Dutch language version of Pages '09)

What need for a conversion to jpeg which is a destructive format ?

If I understand well, you had a PDF.

Open in Preview

cmd + 3

select the rectangular area to paste

copy

paste in Pages

do the trick with no loss.

Glad to see that Peter think the same 😉

To be the AW6 successor, iWork MUST integrate a TRUE DB, not a list organizer !

It allow us to select a rectangular area like the one which is drawn in my late screenshot.

Here you may see the menu "Tools" which offer the menu items whose shortcuts are cmd 1, cmd 2, cmd 3.

As I already wrote, cmd 3 allow us to select a rectangular area.

If you trigger cmd 2 you may trigger text as you may see below.

At least on my machine, Preview defaults to the mode activated by cmd 2.

Yvan was suggesting you take a selection inside Preview app. To get the selection tool you use command 3 and drag that over the part of the image you want.

Better to get the pdf itself in Preview:

Why "better".

If we want to insert a subset of a page, it's more efficient to insert a selection.

Doing that isn't the same as taking a screenshot.

It doesn't rely to the display resolution.

It copy a piece of the PDF and paste it as such.

Are you really unable to read entire sentences ?

I apologize but Text mode is the only one allowing us to apply Select All (at least in a multi-pages document).

Copying in Text mode extract the styled text but drop the layout and your original question was about the layout, not about styled text.

In Move mode, we may copy the visible page as a whole.

The Selection mode allow us to copy a subset of a page.

But none of these modes allow us to copy an entire multipage document which is what you asked in :

The only thing preventing me to use it on a larger scale would be the posibility of selecting all pages for copying, or is that also possible in stead of copy/pasting every page manually?

Open you PDF in Preview

Select the content of one page

Copy

Paste in a Pages document

Insert a page break

apply the same scheme for page 2 then to other pages of the PDF.

I guess that you will have to resize the pastured objects but it's a minor point.

In the end I tried a different approach because of other issues.

Because I had background images, floating items, etc a simple copy paste did not work without completely messing up the layout, so I used the pdf (from the original pages) and ran a PDF to JPG Photoshop action on it. This gave me jpg's with correct layout and all for every page. Then I imported those back into the other Pages document.

It it isn't editable anymore, a to be considered drawback, but for what I needed it, it worked :-)

Jun 6, 2011 1:57 AM in response to KOENIG Yvan

Ah the selection tool, I had that one, the shortkey just doesn't seem to work here.

I guess it's exactly the same thing as a CMD+A, CMD+C, CMD+V.

The work has already been done anyway, so i'm not going to redo the work on this project, merely for the idea of having a "perfect" copy. Though the quality seems to be better with the preview Copy/Paste it seems a great solution for all my future small projects.

If another project accurs of this magnitute i'll, with a lot of individual pages i'll probably just take the PS action. It will speed up the workflow a lot, plus I don't really have to worry about quality. My current settings were set for high quality printing anyway. (CMYK, 16bit, 300dpi).

Don't get me wrong here, I completely understand your resistance to using lossy compressions. I deal with these kind of decissions almost on a daily basis so quality is very important to me, but i'm not going to create huge documents so I can zoom in on them on an absurd level and still have crispy clean quality it my output format isn't anything like that :-) I'm sure we all agree on that.

Though what I seem to understand from both your answers is that by doing a (system/Preview) copy/paste I'm using the native PNG settings? Or is it something different? Is it a losless vector output of the original file? Might be some usefull information for expanding my knowledge and decisionmaking in the future?

I didn't wrote about a PNG used as a starting point but about a PDF.

It you copy a selection of a PDF, you keep the vector description of the selected contents.

I'm sorry if I confused you, I didn't mean PNG as a starting point, but more like PNG as the way of transporting the selected region to pages. Like the Mac OSX screenshot capabilities use PNG as an output format.

But if you say it used a vector description, which is seems to be after a quick zoom, it doesn't really matter, cause then it is a completely lossless way of transportation to Pages. That's terrific!

If you want to insert the PDF pages in a Pages document, you must copy/paste them one by one.

If the document is a multi-pages one, as far as I know, you can't apply Select All in "Selection mode" but of course you may apply it in "Text mode".

If I understood well your question, "Selection mode" was required because it's the one which preserve the layout.
