Smokers Void Apple Warranties

I went into apple today and they told me that even though i haven't had the lastest imac that long all my warranties are void even though its a known problem cause i have smoked near my imac they said this was also the case for any apple products. This should have been made clearer when i brought the imac or iphone or ipad or ipod but at no point as they sold them to me did they mention this. It is not in the terms and conditions. This does not happen with PC's or with Apple products brought through PC World and similar stores it just seems to effect those brought from apple.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.6)

Take a look at this excerpt of the warranty:

Note the "other external causes". It appears that the damage is not covered if it is determined to have been caused by smoke (which would be an external cause). It probably wouldn't matter if it was cigarette or BBQ grill smoke... Personally, I would not subject any electronic equipment to smoke.

Resellers have their own policies which may be different from the manufacturer's.

I was wondering about that......

Ashamed? Not at all. Not even in the sixties when I knew him.

Well, having grown up in postwar Germany, I am surprised to hear that. Most of us were taught to be ashamed of it, hide it, don't mention it; in fact, the entire era's history was not even taught in school - there was a huge void in history class starting with the early 30's.

Please don't mistake my comments as possibly being offended or anything adversary - I was born after the "mess", so only have my parents' account of what happened, but I wanted to convey what was being felt over there for many years afterwards.

I can appreciate where you're coming from but bear in mind that I'm not talking about "regular German citizens." These are individuals that were fairly high in the Nazi party AND they were living the good life in the U.S. after the war. You can almost say that they never really experienced the defeat.

There was another coworker that had been a Panzer tank commander. I learned from him that the Sherman was a (relative) puny weakling. The Germans called it the "Ronson" because of the Ronson cigarette lighter company's advertising slogan "One flick and it's lit."

If four Shermans fought one Panzer, the Panzer would win. We would send five or six Shermans against a single Panzer and, when the dust settled, one Sherman would remain. Fortunately we built some 70,000 Shermans while, thanks to bombing by the U.S. Army Air Force, Germany was able to build only 10,000 Panzers.

Germany also had a Tiger tank but it was almost useless because it weighed seventy tons! Fewer than a thousand were built.

Ahh, okay, I understand. Pity about the good life though.

sorry about getting back to the OP here.. intresting history lesson.

but this isnt new. this has been apple's policy for at least 2 years. just found an article back in 2009 about this.

just working on them according to Apple violates OSHA.. Which as being someone allergic to smoke myself, i see the point.

I never heard of an electronic product being denied warranty work, but i have always known that smoke and electronics just dont mix. I always get a kick out of the people complaining about their game consoles going out, and finding that they chain smoke... yet blame the console.

yet another reason not to smoke. 😁

I have never smoked in the same room as my iMac--only smoked in my living room that is three rooms and 70 feet away.

Yet I just got a call from a Genius bar service rep who says they will not replace my display because they found evidence of smoking.

I called them back and asked them to provide a detailed narrative of what they found, along with photographs justifying their claim. I think that is fair, don't you? I mean, I think of you plan to deny service you should be able to justify your assertions.

No I do not think it is a coincidence.

But I tbink it's absolutely pathetic that it could damage my iMac, when I have 5 other macs throughout the house that show absolutely not signs of damage.

I have a MacBook pro that has been here much longer, and has actually spent much time in the room where I do allow occasional smoking, and it has accumulated nothing. I recently opened it to upgrade the RAM, so I did an inspection of fan and heat sink, and using compressed air I only found dust to blow out--no goo or gunk.

It's a shame. I really love this iMac. It's the center or my media creation studio and is consistently used for business. I'm just disappointed that it is so succeptible to envornimental contaminants. It spent a couple weeks on my dining room table when I purchased it--possibly 16' feet from kitchen--and I'm curious if that could really be where it picked up so much environment contaminants.

Again, there is not heavy or constant smoking in my home, and no other machines have picked up any contamination.

It's as thought this 27" iMac tries to work as an air purifier/cleaner that has no filter installed!

it could be simply a matter of placement.

your iMac was in a location that it was able to collect the smoke. Air vent in house, smoke from your clothes and you have a fan/AC in said room that circulates air... smoke in iMac.

and like others said, you can smell the smoke from a distance. I work with a guy that chain smokes and even before i see him... i smell him coming.

The Apple Support Communities are an international user to user technical support forum. As a man from Mexico, Spanish is my native tongue. I do not speak English very well, however, I do write in English with the aid of the Mac OS X spelling and grammar checks. I also live in a culture perhaps very very different from your own. When offering advice in the ASC, my comments are not meant to be anything more than helpful and certainly not to be taken as insults.

They likely have test strips that they wipe across the inside and if it tests positive for the contaminants in tobacco its and open & shut case, No Warranty.

Back to the OP, if a reseller is honoring the Apple warranty as you state, then they are likely eating the case because it's doubtful that Apple is reimbursing them for the repair/parts. From my every day association with the AARP here in Monterrey, I know that Apple is very strict on the AARP's and its reimbursement.

I have had this iMac 27" I was describing earlier, serviced in my home. I live two hours away (~102 mi) from nearest Apple Store, and the machine was/is mission critical. So they had a service tech come and replace components on-site. Wish I had done that THIS time, perhaps could have gotten things done more quickly.

The Genius bar still has the machine and is stress testing before finishing up replacing power supply, logic board and video card.

If I had to recommend service to someone who fears their service will be denied due to environmental contaminants, I would recommend they take the machine to a friendly Apple authorized service location rather than the genius bar.

I am still quite annoyed that I can't see, with my own eyes, the damage they claim I've caused. Like I said, I've asked for photos/and or a detailed narrative, and so far have been denied.
