Logic Pro V Logic Studio & Final Cuts etc

Hi all,

Ive been using an old Logic Express for about 2 years learning the basics. Its my friends system. I already have a mac mini

that I bought 2 years back. So now I want to get my own set up but Im not sure which software I should be going for!!???

Ive learned the basics with Express but its limited in its music data base. I write chart type music, pop you could say. I think

the new express would probably just be similar enough to the old Express my friend was letting me use. I believe Pro comes

with all the jam packs and its obviously a little more sophisticated.

But Im confused now ith Final Cuts, Logic Studio, Logic Pro. Which one is best suited me is what Im trying to establish.

And if I do go for one of these, is a Mini Mac sufficient or do I need to upgrade that stuff first before I even think about purchasing

the software....

Thanks again 🙂

Logic Pro is no longer available if I'm not mistaken, and Final Cut is for Movie Production. Logic Studio is best bet for music creation.

Thanks mate. My worry was that Pro/Studio was all about the Amps & Mainstage (Something I may not really use) But if it also has much more intruments and plugins then I guess its worth it!

Do you think a mac mini like mine OS X 10.5.8 is capable of running Logic Studio ok. Or do I need to focus more

on upgrading my Mac first and then the software. Not that I have the money hahaha

That's something I've asked myself when considering desktops - but I haven't really had the money either! Main thing is: how much RAM does your mini have? I run on 4GB and it hasn't caused me problems (though I'm usually quite careful). I expect though you have just 2GB right? A good processor helps too. So relative age of your mini and these kinds of specs will affect the result you get. Probably a bumped-up mini (with the extra RAM, extra HD space) would run small studio projects okay, but I think most people would say if you're serious, get an iMac, and if super-serious (and loaded), a Mac Pro. A thing many of us dream of...

Money, its always problematic, I personally deserve alot more of it hahaha.

Yeas its 2GB. But Im told you can buy another two 2GB cards and insert them in

the mac. Giving it ultimately 4GB. This is a cheap way of upgrading that. It has duo

core processor. I actually got really stung with my mac. When I ordered there had

been a new updated model released and of course they sent me the old one to get

rid of stock! I was naive at the time.

So its best to have an Imac or Mac Pro (dreaming) but it can be done with a souped up

mac mini untill I have the money to upgrade to an Imac or what ever?

I am really serious. Id love nothing more than the best of equipemtn because I would

use it and get so much more done so much sooner!

thanks again mate

The problem with the mini -might- be disk related. Logic studio takes an enormous amount of disk space to install the full package. That won't leave you much room for recording audio, so in addition to Logic studio you would need a good sized external drive. Besides, Mac OSX does quite a bit of disk access on it own, add to that streaming audio and I can see your internal drive being quickly overwhelmed.

How much free space does your internal drive have?

Also, fyi, the new Logic Express has many more features and is much closer to Logic Pro than the old version. But it doesn't come with all of the Jam Packs... however it does come with quite a few instruments, presets and loops, plus, if you have Garageband installed Logic can see and use all of those instruments & loops. I have a few Logic students using LE 9, it's the best $200 you can spend plus it will probably run much better on your current system... at a later date you could upgrade to Logic by paying only the difference. LE9 has all of the important features of Logic Pro, it's certainly not lacking.

Thats interesting. I was led to believe Express hadnt evolved a lot since. But if it has it may just be the right pacakge for me. As I said I wouldnt really be looking to use main stage and other things Pro seems to be selling itself on.

My disk space is already nearly full, It only had a 75GB to begin with. I was wondering was there anyway to increase this or am I just better off spending my money on a Mac upgrade??? I was thinking of increasing the Ram to its maximum of 4GB also wondering would that help.

I was also thinking Id have to completely un install express and then install Pro or what ever I chose to buy. I wonder is this what people do when up grading as you'd be taken up massive amounts of space!? But then I guess u lose a lot of the instruments etc that I would have liked to incorporate to Pro from the old Logic (if thats possible).

I do have a 1TB Hard Drive. I now try bounce all my projects through it but Logic Express was originally installed on my Mac. And Im finding that the 1TB is filling up super fast with my projects. My Internal hard drive is like nearly maxed

Ahhhh I dont know. Im not educated enough on all this & everytime I go to make the up grade I realise more consequences or problems prevent me. You can stand to make a lot of mistakes and waste money when your technically naive, but musically driven 😟

Thanks again for your post has helped alot!

Whoever told you that Express hadn't evolved is 100% wrong. LE9 is functionally Logic Pro without all of the goodies and a few high end plugins. I know people doing professional work using LE8 & LE9 on Macbook Pro's, they like it because of the small footprint. Same audio engine as LPro...etc.

Logic Express 9 is actually the same as Logic Pro 9 - without the following features:

- DAE/TDM support

- DAP (distributed audio processing with Logic Node)

- Surround

- EVP88

- EVB3

- EVD6

- Sculpture

- Space Designer

- Delay Designer

- Linear Phase EQ

- Match EQ

- Multipressor (there is only the 'Preset Multipressor' as in LE7/8)

A complete Logic Studio install would take 1/2 your system drive, if not more so that's out of the question with your current set up. Increasing the memory would help, but your system drive's disk space is an issue.

It may be time to consider a new system.

The thing to do is take your time, no need to jump into anything.

Very interesting, really informative. Thanks so much for all this. I dont wanna rush in and I havent been but for some reason I feel compelled to upgrade to pro but now your making me see things differently. Thanks.

Someone suggested just there that I could install a new hard drive into my Mac mini and there very cheap, they said a 320gb cost them 50euro and it was really easy to install.

If this is possible do you think I could do it this way?? Whether Express or Pro I guesss this might be a good move econimically. My only caution now is Express doesnt come with all the jam packs and I think Pro does.

Hmmmm what to do!

Again I really appreciate your help on this its giving me a clearer insight into Express 🙂

Ive been told my Mac Mini can actually take a 500GB Hard Drive! So thats even better 🙂 Only problem is: Apple, here in Dubin, want 480 to supply the hard drive & 4GB of ram and intall it!! I could buy the parts myself for 90!! I was gonna install them myself untill someone reminded me about the "Operating System" & Data Transfer!! I wouldnt know how to put all my info from the old disk onto the new, Nor how to put Apple's operating system onto a blank disk! So once again a new problem. Thanks again for your help on this its really appreciated!
