How do we delete an old apple ID from the app store and use our current one?

Delete the apps downloaded by the previous owner, they (like everyone else downloaded by an account) are tied to his account so only his account can download updates to those apps.

Why is this even an issue, and why hasn't Apple fixed it yet?

The previous owner should have wiped the iPad prior to selling it, there isn't anything for Apple to fix.

When I sign into iCloud on the iPad in question, ALL associated apps and functions should use my iCloud account info.

...

All apps should revert to my iCloud profile, period.

? Of course they shouldn't, and what has iCloud got to do with downloaded content anyway ? If you've restored to a backup you are downloading exactly what was in that backup - content is tied to the account that bought and downloaded them from the store, they are permanently tied to that account.

Not helpful, Chris, and not very smart of you either. I am having the same problem with a used ipad I purchased from someone else. None of your responses answer the question. How do we delete an old apple ID from the app store and use our current one? Why is this even an issue, and why hasn't Apple fixed it yet? I shouldn't even have to be doing this, it should be automatic when I sign in with my ID.

**************** When I sign into iCloud on the iPad in question, ALL associated apps and functions should use my iCloud account info. No one should need to wipe the iPad for this to occur automatically. Yet, it doesn't. Should be a simple fix, yet it persists as an issue. A known issue. For 5 years now. All apps should revert to my iCloud profile, period. All apps I didn't personally download should auto delete or otherwise not appear. Certainly the App Store shouldn't automatically assume that the previous owner's info is the correct sign in info for the App Store once I've signed into iCloud and everything else with my own account info. This is just stupid, and poor operational design on Apple's part.

Your post is nonsensical. Anything on the device is locally stored there. The only way to get it off is to erase it. That is the correct way to sell or give away a device - to erase it and remove it from Find My iPhone: Prepare your device to sell or give away

It's not magic. And just so you know, signing into iCloud is not in any way related to what Apps and functions you use. Apps and other purchased media belong to the iTunes & App Store, not iCloud.

iCloud related functions do automatically download to your device when you sign into iCloud - Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, Notes.

But Apps and Purchased media belong to the App Store, and if the act of signing out of it deleted your apps, that would be an issue, wouldn't it? Also, singing in a different Apple ID to the iTunes & App Store does not change anything on the device.

It is not an issue, there is no "fix". There are procedures for signing into and using an iOS device, and they all involve erasing the previous owner's (or user's) "stuff" from the device. Once the device has been erased, and removed from Find My iPhone, you set it up, and you can set it up from a backup which does have all of your Settings, data, and pointers to your purchases which then automatically download to the device as a part of the restore.

So, if you have a particular question about an issue you are having, please let us know what it is. But mistaking your lack of knowledge about how the iOS device works as an "issue" is simply not accurate.

With activation lock you need to type in the id and password of the account that it's locked to.

Or, and if you were the original purchaser of the device (i.e. it wasn’t bought used), you could try going to an Apple Store (make a Genius Bar appointment if you do) or try contacting iTunes Support online (https://www.apple.com/emea/support/itunes/contact.html) and see if they can remove the device from the account - they are likely to want to see proof of ownership before they might help e.g. original receipt with the serial number on it

Sorry, should have quoted:"Do you have a question about the Apple ID that you posted on a public forum above? l will ask the hosts to edit it as you are violating someone else's privacy by posting it here." A poor user makes a little mistake and a "Genius" threatens to tattle to Cupertino. But since Apple Inc. abandoned the original forums AppleCare Agents used to be in charge of, it might take longer to have the "noob's" post containing the stray username, than it will AAPL to fix the multiple Apple ID issues that have plagued the system since before MobilMe. former senior AC agent under Jeanne T.
