How do we delete an old apple ID from the app store and use our current one?

Delete the apps downloaded by the previous owner, they (like everyone else downloaded by an account) are tied to his account so only his account can download updates to those apps.

Why is this even an issue, and why hasn't Apple fixed it yet?

The previous owner should have wiped the iPad prior to selling it, there isn't anything for Apple to fix.

Hi. This is to everyone who still have the same problem as to not able to change the apple id while updating or installing the app when it prompt you to. I have the same problem when my co worker ask me for my help. She had an iphone 6 plus and was trying to backup to her new iphoneX. Everything seems fine until she had trouble installing one of her social app (wechat). It prompted her to input the password from an account that's not from her and she couldn't change the apple ID from that prompt screen. I've checked her Apple ID account log in from settings and I tried login out and in again but with same situation. She told me her friend had help her setup her iphone6plus and install the wechat app but it was with her friend's apple account. She had been using the app and signed in with her own apple account on the phone since. So I would assume (like previous ppl who had commented before) that the app was linked to her friend's account because it was installed on that phone while her friend's apple account was link to that phone. Then she signed in with her own apple account but technically the app is still linked to her friend's account. I don't think this is a flaw. I think its to protect app developers themselves. If the app cost money, it would make sense to make sure the app you are trying to use, you had actually paid for it, or had permission for it and not sharing paid app (unless family account sharing) to other ppl.

So with that in mind, I found a solution (at least it worked for me). I deleted the app with her account signed in. Then I log out of iTunes & App Stores account. next I proceed to go to app store and download the app. And finally you will be prompted and be able to input your apple ID and password. Problem Solved and the app will always be linked to that account. Hope that solves a lot of ppls problem. CHEERS!

When I sign into iCloud on the iPad in question, ALL associated apps and functions should use my iCloud account info.

...

All apps should revert to my iCloud profile, period.

? Of course they shouldn't, and what has iCloud got to do with downloaded content anyway ? If you've restored to a backup you are downloading exactly what was in that backup - content is tied to the account that bought and downloaded them from the store, they are permanently tied to that account.

Not helpful, Chris, and not very smart of you either. I am having the same problem with a used ipad I purchased from someone else. None of your responses answer the question. How do we delete an old apple ID from the app store and use our current one? Why is this even an issue, and why hasn't Apple fixed it yet? I shouldn't even have to be doing this, it should be automatic when I sign in with my ID.

**************** When I sign into iCloud on the iPad in question, ALL associated apps and functions should use my iCloud account info. No one should need to wipe the iPad for this to occur automatically. Yet, it doesn't. Should be a simple fix, yet it persists as an issue. A known issue. For 5 years now. All apps should revert to my iCloud profile, period. All apps I didn't personally download should auto delete or otherwise not appear. Certainly the App Store shouldn't automatically assume that the previous owner's info is the correct sign in info for the App Store once I've signed into iCloud and everything else with my own account info. This is just stupid, and poor operational design on Apple's part.

Your post is nonsensical. Anything on the device is locally stored there. The only way to get it off is to erase it. That is the correct way to sell or give away a device - to erase it and remove it from Find My iPhone: Prepare your device to sell or give away

It's not magic. And just so you know, signing into iCloud is not in any way related to what Apps and functions you use. Apps and other purchased media belong to the iTunes & App Store, not iCloud.

iCloud related functions do automatically download to your device when you sign into iCloud - Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, Notes.

But Apps and Purchased media belong to the App Store, and if the act of signing out of it deleted your apps, that would be an issue, wouldn't it? Also, singing in a different Apple ID to the iTunes & App Store does not change anything on the device.

It is not an issue, there is no "fix". There are procedures for signing into and using an iOS device, and they all involve erasing the previous owner's (or user's) "stuff" from the device. Once the device has been erased, and removed from Find My iPhone, you set it up, and you can set it up from a backup which does have all of your Settings, data, and pointers to your purchases which then automatically download to the device as a part of the restore.

So, if you have a particular question about an issue you are having, please let us know what it is. But mistaking your lack of knowledge about how the iOS device works as an "issue" is simply not accurate.

I know this is an old post but my husband has encountered similar.we both have iPhone 7; and before that most other models. Only ever updated over iCloud. Purchased music on previous phones with his Apple ID. I never use his phone. Today he was doing update of a few apps. A box popped up asking for password. On inspection the Apple ID in the box was mine. Although inserted mid email was - which is not part of my email. I checked his iCloud and signed ouT and back in. All of that is his email therefore his APPLE ID. still in the iTunes & App Store it popped up,again. How did my Apple ID get there.
