1 I'm using Safari
2 Log into Discussions and read some threads
3 Go to other web sites (eg NYT, BBC)
4 Come back to Discussions perhaps 30 minutes later and find that I'm now logged out
5 Discussions not open as a tab
6 Discussions not set as a Top Site

Started this post at 21:49:50, then decided to watch the Dallas - OKC game for a little while until dinner was served (pan-broiled pork chops, endive salad with toasted pecans, Danish bleu cheese and pear in a coriander vinaigrette); walked my dog, had a smoke on the stoop with the pooch while playing a game of solitaire on my iPhone (won), then came back here at 23:13:41 to see what happens (copying my post to the clipboard before pressing Add Reply)...
And:
ROTFL
I wasn't laughing - I was salivating; I want to borrow his chef (except for the coriander....) 😀
Same as others with latest Safari on 10.5.8 on G4.
When I come back after being logged in sometimes I will be found to be logged out. When I try to log backin I get:
9: invalid cookie supplied Unknown status code: 9
I have to delete the four apple discussion cookies to be able to log back in.
Further, sometimes when I come back to my computer I will get an error message that says Safari encountered an error and shutdown.
All this started a couple f days ago.
Please send me a plate of that! So very hungry now!
This has started happening to me in the last couples days for the first time. Definitely annoying. Both FF4.0.1 and Safari5.0.5 at every turn if I am not actively using the forum. Tabs up and running- I come back to the forums- I am logged out.
This morning it is especially bad:
I've had to login 5 times since 9 am - each time I'm active here, then do something else for less than an hour, come back to my tabs and wind up with the "welcome" page. Still on Firefox.
Today is much worse than previous days. Everytime I come back I have to relog back in. Probably 3 or 4 times. Sometimes I have been on other websites, sometimes I have just not been on the computer. If it is more than an hour of inactivity on this site, I get logged off. Both on Firefox and Safari.

At least there's consistency. I logged out (by self) three+ hours ago and when I returned I was still logged out! No complaints there.
I've got consistency:
It happens every time the Mac goes to sleep (which I have set at 10 min of inactivity) - it doesn't matter if I don't use it for 11 minutes or an hour - if it goes to sleep, the login is dead upon wakeup.
And, I also noticed that it takes an extraordinarily long time between the click on the actual login button and the appearance of my homepage - at least 20, sometimes 30 seconds while there is a completely white/blank page showing.
Well, I also thought it was consistent with the system going to sleep, but now I get logged out pretty much any time I am not actively using the discussions (including browsing other sites or files within Safari). If is going to be this much hassle to use the ASC, regulars aren't going to be using it much (including me).
Having had the misfortune yesterday of being re-directed from my (open tab) Yahoo Inbox to the (Russian?) malware site which took over the Firefox window completely (no options, no menu bar), I now consciously log in and out every time I check my Yahoo mail.
And I am starting to wonder if this behavior (getting logged out) is a new, but intentional security feature here?
It really isn't much of an inconvenience to me. I usually leave it on Your Discussions. I come back, refresh the page, see that I am signed out, click on "Sign in" to sign back in, and it takes me right back to my Your Discussions page. As long as I know to expect it, it's not bothersome to me. It just takes a little getting used to it. If they need to log us out after a period of inactivity in order to help optimize performance, it's a fair exchange, at least in my mind.
I certainly hope not. There sure has been a lot of website poisoning going on lately, but if I can't leave a tab for a few minutes to check out some (possibly) related stuff without getting logged out, then this isn't going to be worthwhile, especially since the email notifications are still goofy.

That's putting an optimistic spin on it. I think getting logged out after only thirty minutes is a bit much, though, even if it's to "optimize performance." It happened to Matt K, one of the mods, and he didn't know what was going on. So, it wouldn't appear to be happening by design.
