My iPad contacts disappeared after adding a contact

My IPad 2 contacts just disappeared after adding a contact. What will I do aside from syncing? Are there any other solutions?

I have printed off your recommendation to develop a gmail account info along with this most recent reply. My plan is to implement both actions. It may take me a while to get caught up but once I do, all of you who read these messages will be hearing from me again.

Thankfully, my contacts seem well-adjusted lately but I have never rested securely since the earlier losses. I could deal with their disappearing if I knew they were backed up and would re-appear.

Thank you, jasontoheal, for giving us something to do that gives hope for the future, way more than we have had.

I set up a confirmed Gmail account, followed the directions as set forth for my iPad mail, contacts, add accounts, etc., and it does not recognize my Gmail account. Do I have to generate a new application specific password, a 2-step process after downloading a Google app as I have read under my Google account info? I didn't think the info made it sound that involved. Perhaps I simply need to give the Gmail account time or to reset some security info within?

We have had wonderful much-needed thundershowers, producing good rain today so I have been offline much of the day.

My iPad finally recognized my Gmail account. I rebooted my laptop and synced through iTunes just to double-secure things. Then, once again, I tried to set up Mobile Exchange, unsuccessfully. I tried, several times without verification. It said my contacts might show up twice. I okayed that, but when I checked, they hadn't. At least they were still there though!

My contacts disappeared on my ipad2 after syncing with Itunes and Outlook. The names were all still there but no numbers, addresses, info. After reading some of the posts, first I backed up my Outlook contacts on my computer in case the sync went the other way and erased my Outlook contacts. Then I made a test contact on my ipad and after I saved it, all my contacts information reappeared. Something for you others to try.

I had this problem as well. I have an ipad2 2 cameras, no wifi, 4.3.5(8L1), I really liked the iPad since managing contacts and calendars is "conceptually" very attractive. I use yahoo as my main mail, contacts , and calendar. So i added these accounts to my iPad. This is very useful since my iPod touch iPad 2 and my online yahoo account can always be synched without a synch operation, since all fetch from the same account online. The problem is this. When sometimes I add contacts on my iPad, and hit save, the app crashes and I lose all my contacts on the iPad, including the iTunes synched copy. This is HUGELY DISSAPOINTING! I was able to restore the contacts, when I erase my yahoo password and reentered it on the add account for contacts (cardav) and pressed submit. The iTunes contacts can only be restored by a synch with the computer where I have iTunes running. Is there a oermantent fix? I wanted to use my iPad as my main organizer.

Please tell us what version of iOS you were using when you were directly typing in the contact data and your entire contact list vanished. Its important to know if this is still happening in newer iOS versions.

Did you try shuting down the iPad (hold the off button for long enough to the swipe to power off) and rebooting it without a sync? (Sometimes the contacts come back)

Using the delete key in the search box worked for me. It seems that the "as shipped" version of 5.1 contains a space in the search bar. The contacts are there, but you cannot see them as the app thinks you're filtering on items that start with a space. Wiping the search field allowed me to view the full list.
