this is quite a easy problem to fix if you know what you are doing its not a software problem it is infact where the two pins inside the button are not making contact properly with the main board inside the phone apple should repair or replace if under waranty if not there are loads of videos on youtube on how to replace or repair this problem most of the time this can be done by opening the phone and just spreading the pins apart so they make conctact with the main board inside the phone this happens with all iphones inc 4 not come accross it on a ipad yet!

Good Luck

(Since there's no way to get in contact with AppleCare I've had to use this form - please forward this email to the right department - thank you)

Hi

The last couple of weeks i have experienced some difficulties (an unresponsive and loose Home Button) with the Home button on my 9 months old iPhone 4, which is why i sent it in for inspection last week (2nd of July 2011). I got a phone call earlier today, where a technical supporter explained to me, that due to moisture damage the warranty didn't cover the loose "Home Button". That seems very strange to me, and I'm accusing Telenor Danmark for using this as an excuse not to cover the defect.

I've searched around the web, and I can see that other people who have had the same issues as me, have received a new phone or have had it repaired. I've also asked a Apple iPhone technician, if he thought that the two things could be related, but he said that moisture in the dock and the Home Button couldn't be related, unless the phone had been soaked in water (which it hasn't).

I'm writing a formal complaint to the Danish Complaints Board regarding Telenor Danmark, and the way that they exploit the moisture sensor to avoid and dismiss the warranty - putting the customers in a really bad position.

Kind regards,

Anders Therkildsen

Hi everyone,

I also had the same problem like less than a month after I purchased my iPad 2. I used to think that it was due to the iOS update to 4.3.x, as I got mine out of the box with the version prior to that, and didn't have problems before I updated.

However, it could also be that the home button pad had accummulated oil/dirt from our thumbs, which get in the way of it working properly.

Here's what I did:

1. Turned off my iPad2.

2. Wet my thumb with alcohol (not too wet, say a drop or two), and pressed down on the home button and rubbed the alcohol in in a circular motion. The idea is to let the alcohol break down the oil and dirt.

3. Wiped the home button thoroughly with a clean cloth (i dont recommend tissue or cotton as it might leave residue that could again 'clog' the inside perimeter of the home button.

Before I did that, my home button was responding in around 1 click out of 20-30 tries. After cleaning, the home button now responds in 9 out of 10 presses. 🙂

Let us know if you try and find that this works for you as well.

I totally feel your pain. After restoring my phone and re-restoring my phone and totally starting back from the beginning...I was about to through my phone against the wall...or start banging my head against it. So, I did some troubleshooting of my own and here is what I discovered/came up with/etc

I took off my cover. I had an indestructible Otter Box. Well, I think that was really creating issues, as the plunger on the "home button" cover was not pressing down on it well enough.

Also, I discovered a little trick for googling it. Press and hold your power switch until the slide to shut it off pops up. Release your power button at that time. Then, lightly press your home button until it goes back to the home screen. This basically recalibrates your home button. I did it twice for good measure, pressing the home button in different manners of which I was accustomed. Basically, press your home button exactly how you normally would when it was functioning properly. That way, it will recalibrate to your usual way of pressing that button.

Hopefully, this all makes sense. It worked for me...and hopefully it will work for you.

1. Go to Settings and turn on the "passcode lock". Select the option to lock immediately with any combination of your choosing.

2. Open any application.

3. Press the power button to lock your phone.

4. Press the power button to unlock.

5. Before entering your combination/lock code, press "Emergency Call" and then tap the bottom left arrow to go back. (Don't fret - this won't dial an emergency number.)

6. Now, enter your passcode.

7. Your Home button will be recalibrated and function normally.
