I'm trying to output sound from my apple TV to a 3.5mm import jack on my sound system using a Toslink optical audio cable with a 3.5mm adaptor. However, I cannot hear any sound. I'm not sure if I have the wrong cable or if there is a setting that needs to be changed but I'm not sure what I am doing wrong.

I'm not absolutely sure of the circumstances under which you would use the adaptor you have, however the Apple TV outputs an optical signal, if your amp doesn't accept optical signals then it's not going to work.
I had a similar problem, although I wanted to convert toslink to RCA. I had to buy a box from an electronics store to convert the signal. It works fine.
