Remove track numbers from filenames
I discovered iTunes has added track numbers to the front of my song files, thousands of them. How can I remove these numbers in bulk?
I disabled all newly addeed track numbers, so that is not my question.

Can't.
"I disabled all newly addeed track numbers, so that is not my question."
How did you do this?
Does this also update the iTunes Library?
Uh, be careful! I haven't read the whole topic but those instructions sound like they will remove track numbers for your whole library not only in the folders outside of iTunes but also inside of iTunes. Your albums will then lost tracks order en-mass.
That’s the kind of thing I am afraid off with Patrick53amw’s procedure.
Well, I use iTunes 7.5 from 2007 and I have never ever let iTunes manage my media so I am not sure of the exact degree to which new iTunes forces file names on people. Since I manage my media I can name my files whatever I want and put them wherever I want. That said, that might be the only way for you to not have track numbers there unless iTunes does not rename the actual files when structuring them and you use another ripper and converter to do your file creation for you. You can also try renaming the files from inside iTunes using a renaming script from the Dougscripts web site. This is presuming iTunes does not automatically name your files (which I am not about to test on my collection, not that I could anyway without the newest iTunes which I am not about to install).
iTunes does not add the track number to the filename when ripping from CD.
It did when iTunes 10 was released (this thread) but it was removed since then at some point.
The fix is actually simple. If you don't mind not seeing the album artwork column.
-Go to "Songs" in the upper right hand corner. (Stupid and random place to put the option)
-Deselect the "Show Artwork" box
Now the track numbers column is gone, and looks like the good old days before itunes was ******

Police Boyz,
That is an interesting aspect of Songs view. Deselecting "Show Artwork" removes the Track number column.
However, that is not what this thread (from 2011) is about. The OP's concern was about the track number embedded in the file name.
