Curtain of death

iMac12,2 - 3.4 GHz, Intel Core i7 - Randomly and without warning, a black transparent curtain descends from the top of the screen to the bottom and all input devices are blocked. A message in five languages appears in the middle of the screen. The message says "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button until the machine turns off then push the power button to restart." This has occurred ~10 time since purchasing the machine about a month ago. The events are logged, this is the last one:

TO ALL.

Guys!

It's not about the RAM (in my case, of cause).

I have fully loaded my 16GB OWC 1333MHz RAM in my MBP i5 13 (Early 2011).

Without an issue!!! All works fine.

See the screenshot:

User uploaded file

I'm pretty sure most of that KP's caused by Parallels Desktop (or maybe other software).

Also It's not about 10.7.4 Update.

It's weard, my on my iMac with only 4GB of RAM Parellels Desktop 6 runs as good as it can.

In similar conditions compared to MacBook Pro.

It still may be about the RAM. OWC sells RAM from a variety of manufacturers so it could depend on who is the manufacturer of the RAM. If you have a look at this monster thread, many, many people were having random shutdowns with 16gb RAM installed and it seemed that certain makes of RAM proved to be the culprit. From what I remember Samsung, Hynix and one or two other makes are trouble free. I think that several users exchanged their RAM for one of the 'known good' makes and the problem went away.

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2473276

Edit: A short-term fix seemed to be to drop down to 12gb - that also cured the problem for many.

May 19, 2012 10:52 AM in response to Paul_31

You're right.

My problem was differrent from described in those threads. I has it when I started Parallels.

A haven't got any problems in general.

I just saw those code lines:

com.parallels.kext.prl_vnic 6.0 11994.637263 - last loaded 30245912192

com.parallels.kext.prl_netbridge 6.0 11994.637263

com.parallels.kext.prl_hid_hook 6.0 11994.637263

com.parallels.kext.prl_hypervisor 6.0 11994.637263

They were just like in my case.

So I started discussion.

May 20, 2012 1:24 PM in response to Miron_2005

Spending some time and finding out what's happening, I can only conclude that my problem caused by 10.7.4 Updade.

The Memory is good.

All software working fine.

I only noticed Parallels glitching AND weird WindowServer processor overcousuming.

Earlier I didn't observe any WindowServer overloadings.

As soon as I can conclude, there's something wrong with 10.7.4 Update.

It seems all right but strange things happens.

Who can describe this?

BSD process name corresponding to current thread: Adobe Photoshop

Is this Photoshop fault?

I can't believe that this all about memory.

Really, this time machine gone down right after Photoshop quitting.

At that moment, there was about 3,5GB of free memory from the 16.

And all was good until I Quit Photoshop.

It's hard to say, but unfortunately You guys are absolutely right.

It's about the RAM.

Those OWC 16 Gigs are seems to be bad.

I got back to my 8GB planes and it's all right for over five days.

No Kernel panics. Runnung Parallels, Photoshop and other apps with no glitch at all.

I am so dissappointed:(

I'll bring those RAM back to OWC.

I don't know why so many people are delighted with OWC, but in my case I was getting frustrated.

But I still will experiment with 16GB on board of my MBP as I know other people have those gigs and are very satisfied.

Good luck to all (and to me too;)!

Glad my suggestion helped. Don't be frutrated, muximium, I work on 8 Gb and don't see any need for more. My monitor says I use 1/4 of 8 Gb. Really don't know why should have 16 Gb. The weakest thing in my iMac is hard drive. This is the only part which slows the whole system. Unfortunately, I can't afford SSD of 1Tb ( even if there are any in the World)

But I do need.

I don't know your style of working on your iMac – you start it every day "from scratch", or just sending it to sleep every time having finished your work.

But in my case I almost never rebooting my Book, always sanding it to sleep mode.

I'm keeping loaded a lot of apps all the time and after about a week free RAM space even out of 8 gigs coming to an end, and to free it out I have to reload some "heavy" applications that consume a lot of RAM but "feeling free" to get it back*)

You know what apps I'm talking about*)

So this is the reason why I'm so focused to have as much memory as can accept my Book.

Curtain of death
