Warning: Apple Security Center now on Yahoo Mail

Just a heads up: up until now, it seemed that this would appear mostly with Safari in Hotmail or Google Images - no more.....

They've now expanded into Firefox in an open Yahoo Mail Inbox session.

I had several tabs open - one of them my Yahoo Inbox; when I went back to it to check for new mail, there it was. I had to force quite FF (twice actually). I finally yanked the power cord from my modem so I could re-open FF without the offender trying to download something. Got rid of cookies and the always-used Yahoo sign-in.

Geez lucky I practiced my key combinations for when the attack occurred. Had it all down pat, but didn't expect it. Scared the **** out of me cause it came out of nowhere. Saved it I think though. Would have stopped it within 3 - 4 seconds.

Got a bloody fright.

Hot tip, don't have firefox set for when it starts, to show windows & tabs from last session....😐

For future reference: do not do anything (like extracting files) - just throw it in the trash if it actually gets downloaded. Also, if you're on 10.6.7, run Software Update if you haven't done so - it has a security update from a couple of days ago to help with this.

Oh God! I got careless. I clicked download!!!

To you and everyone else panicking over this: don't panic! You can download it to your heart's content, and could even open the installer package all you like. The protection in Security Update 2011-003 notwithstanding, you are in no danger unless you actually click the Install button. Even then, if there aren't new variants in the future that are more dangerous, you're still in no danger unless you actually "buy" the software, although you'll have the hassle of removing it.

Don't panic, just trash the file, close the browser window, and move on. Your fear is the desired result of this scam, as it may make you do the wrong thing.
