How can I connect my stereo to my iMac G5 to convert music to mp3s?

Hi all. I am new to this so please forgive any netiquette gaffs I may make. I am looking to find out what kind of hardware and software I need to connect my stereo to my iMac G5 so I can convert the contents of my old LP records and audio cassettes into mp3 files. Garage Band doesn't seem to be what I need as far as software goes - is Quicktime what I want? And what specific hardware do I need to convert analog to digital, to get the audio output from the stereo to go into the computer?

Hope someone can help. I'd like to start this project soon so I cna save my old music from the ravages of time!

I think Roxio CD Spin Doctor is definitely the way to go. It will auto define the tracks and is easy to use. You can export the songs automatically to iTunes as Apple Lossles and them convert them to any format in iTunes. You can even set the timer to stop recording so you don't have to monitor the process. It also works great for recording SACD or DVD Audio CDs from those formats instead of standard 16 bit 44100hz CDs. You can sample up to 48000hz for use on an ipod. However for use in iTunes you can go up to 96000hz and 24 bit. I just recorded 4 new Talking Heads DVD Audio CDs using a Denon player. The files sound better than just ripping the CD side.

That is fine for a lot of music and I have done that BUT I have a lot of music on tapes that cannot be found for downloading. Some are family and friends who sing for benefits etc. and are not on CD's.

Thank you all for your suggestions but it is apparent I did not make myself very clear.
I want to connect my stereo to my G5 to convert audio tapes playing in my stereo to my G5 so I can make Cd's from them perferably mp3 but I'd settle even for a regular CD. I am sure there has to be a way of doing this without forking out a lot of money for more programs.
