Error "example.MOV" was not copied because the video format is not supported by the ipad

Hi ipad community

I've taken photos and video on my Canon G12, transferred them successfully to my ipad 2 using the SD Card to Ipad connector. These photos and videos are then available for me to play on my ipad without any problems.

When I synchronise with iPhoto on my mac (through iTunes) everything uploads from SD card to iphoto without a problem. I can play videos and look through photos without issue.

The error in the title of this posting is presented when, within iTunes I go to Sync photos (including videos - ticked). iTunes begins syncing process and then reports the error "Some of the videos in your iTunes library, including the video "name of a video.MOV", were not copied to the iPad "name of ipad" because they cannot be played on this iPad."

The next line in the error states "For a list of items that could not be copied , click the triangle below." In my case I'm up to 44 files that are being treated this way.

I click the triangle below and this reveals a list of specific files that were not copied. I specifically see ""movie_name.MOV" was not copied because the video format is not supported by the iPad "name_of_iPad"." This message is repeated for every file that did not get copied.

My concern is that these files are precisely the same ones that were imported to my ipad successfully from the SD card reader / connector but for some reason are not longer able to be played on the same ipad once the files have been sychronised back from iTunes.

Would greatly appreciate any feedback from the community on this issue if someone else has experienced the same fault. I'm certainly no Mac OS expert but I do believe I've done everything correctly - I may just be missing something really simple.

Many thanks

J

I use HandBrake to convert WMV movies to mp4/mv4 format. However, the MOV format is obviously supported on the iPad, as J noted. The problem is that iTunes doesn't know that.

When you import files from the camera, iPad expects a standard filename format, and any files not in that format will not be imported. I wonder if the problem might be related to having changed the filename?

It seems to me that this is a problem that should be reported to Apple Feedback.

Hi Fred*M

Thank you for your reply. I'm not sure the filename has changed during the syncing process (because I've compared with the kept originals on the SD card - as a backup, should the worst occur).

I am obviously trying to avoid using an in-between product to reconvert something that, as I see it, was working on the iPad in the first place.

I will take your advice and escalate to Apple and see what they can offer as a possible solution (as I said previously, I may be doing something wrong that I am unaware of).

I appreciate your prompt response through the support community.

Kind regards

J

Hi Kappy

I think I do understand what your suggesting in your feedback, however I do believe I am working with a traditional .mov file. I also understand the possibility of corruption at any time up to when I'm trying to review the synced video on my iPad, it just seems a little coincidental that every .mov video file is behaving this way (1 or 2, sure, but all 44? mmm, not so sure).

Nevertheless I do appreciate your offer of support through your comments. As I stated in my previous response to Fred*M, I will take this up with Apple to see if they may have a solution.

Kind regards

Hi J,

I wondered if you found a solution to this in the end?

I have exactly the same issue, I can import a .mov file using the iPad SD card adapter and it plays perfectly on the iPad. It then imports OK into iPhoto but when iTunes go to sync I see the same error.

So, the file does work on the iPad but iTunes won't sync it back - and means I can't get any of the .mov files currently onto the iPad.

I've seen all the stuff about converting but I'm not interested - I bought Apple because it's simple and I've proved the files do work on the iPad so I'm not going to waste my time converting everything.

Any news?

Thanks,

A.

I've found that you can just copy files from iTunes (right cick and show in finder) and change the name to load the videos into an iPad with the connection kit.

You can change itunes videos to .mov but the important bit is the file name. Rename the file MVI_2222 (any number). It will then show up as if it was taken by a camera and you can import to the photo app. You can watch it from there though its not as nice as watching from videos (it doesn't remember where you were for example)

Hope that helps

I agree. I have the very same problem, and I created the video on my iPhone originally, synced it into iPhoto, then deleted. When re-synced via iTunes back to the iPhone (I don't carry all my photos and videos on the phone), I received the identical error message. I will try the suggestion to change the name, but it seems unreasonable to do that when the video originated with and by the iPhone video capture.

Gizmo78023-

The file name is important when using the Camera Connection Kit to import the file. It must be named with 8 characters plus suffix just as it would have been named by your camera, and stored in a folder named DCIM. You can use a USB Thumb Drive with the Camera Connection Kit if you follow this rule.

I have not tried Olimiller's suggestion above, but expect it will work as long as the video is in a format that iTunes can understand. MOV files should be compatible, but something like SWF (Shock Wave Flash) probably will not work.
