WARNING - QuickTime 7.0.4 Problems - Update Erases Other Applications

I installed the QuickTime 7.0.4 update on both my 15" Powerbook and my new Quad Core. Upon reboot, the Entourage, Remote Desktop and Firefox applications were deleted from my Quad Core mysterously and both Tacktor and Last.FM's client were deleted from my laptop mysterously.

Both of the deletes happened immediately following the reboot after the install and I noted that the apps were missing by the grey ? mark left in there place in the doc.

DO NOT INSTALL QUICKTIME 7.0.4!!!!!!! I have lost 3 - 4K Pop 3 emails and all of my addresses tonight. There is a major problem with this update

So, THAT's what happened! After that quick flurry of downloads (iTunes, Safari, Quicktime software updates) I tried to use Disk Utility to insure 'permissions' were in order.
Now I get the error message, "Disk Utility Error: Disk Utility has lost it's connection with the Disk management Tool and can not continue. Please quit and relaunce Disk Utility.
When I do THAT I get an even more frightening warning, "Operations Still In Progress: Disk Utility still has some operations in progress. Quiting in the middle of some operations can leave a disk non-operational (?!!! DOES THAT MEAN BROKEN? UNUSABLE?!) Are you sure you want to quit? (BUT YOU JUST TOLD ME TO!)
Frightening! Does anyone know how I can get Disk Utility to find the Disk Management Tool? Or where I can find it for that matter?

Hey RG ... i'm having that same problem with my G5; the "repair permissions" does just what you described. I've even booted up from the install disc and still the repair permissions won't run. I'll call Apple tech (i've still have extended warranty thank goodness) if i can't work this out by tomorrow and post their help-response.

And i can't get the "reinstall 7.0.1" to reinstall ... says there is a more recent copy already installed. Well, of course!!! So, for me, the reinstall of QT doesn't work either.

Sigh, am so glad its a Saturday!

Hi Taiyosan & Links,
I love you guys. Thanks for the tip and the fix. I got the 'permissions corrected thanks to you guys!
Now I know which of the updates (probably not the QT but the iTunes!) messed things up.
Being a glutton for punishment, I returned the iTunes app to the App Folder and ran Disk Utility again and guess what! The problem returned.
I am impressed by the guys who figured this out. They probably simply removed the updated apps one by one until the problem disappeared.
Now it will be nice if Apple updates the updates to make them more compatible with existing (especially maintenance!) Apple software.
Thanks again!
RG

Tread Carefully! I was locked out for six months, of the Apple Discussions, for making cautionary warnings, such as yours.
