Why do I have to verify the iTunes ID to get free apps in the App Store?

I created an ID on App Store, but if I try to download a free app it asks me to verify the iTunes ID... and there's no way to set "no card" in the payment information!

Is it mandatory to give a credit card (which I don't have...) to use the App Store?

Mnay thanks for your help!

Thank you Carolyn for your reply...

But in my case in the moment I log in in my App store it tells me that my Apple ID has never being used on iTunes and that I need to "verify" my account's information. Then, by clicking on the verify link i can see the page with the payment information (without the no card option).

I tried to follow the instructions on the page you linked me, but I didn't understand if I would need to create a new account (that it's not possible since I already have one) or if I should do something else..

Thank you again!

Open the iTunes app. Choose the iTunes Store. Use the Apple ID that you created to sign into the account in the iTunes app. Check your payment method information. Is there a None option on the right side of the bank card options? If so, choose that option.

You should now be able to download free things in the iTunes Store, the iTunes App Store and also the Mac App Store with just a password verification.

Here it's what I can see when I try to "verify" my iTunes account.

It's written in Italian, but it's clear that there is no None option....

Last week a friend created a new account on the iTunes Store and AppStore and I could see the None Option as you showed in the picture you uploaded, but this seems not to be my case!!

Do you know if there is a way to delete my account so that I could try to create a new one witht he same email address?

Thank you!
