I truly liked MobileMe. It sync'd my computers fine... calendars, contacts, bookmarks....

And the ability to toss up a website without having to get a domain name was GREAT... I created a lot of websites for local friends, organizations, etc., that were NOT trying to reach out to the entire world or make money. A simple website got their message across to their local audience and it WORKED. Those days are gone for me... unless I use Google or another free site service and then the site will be ugly. Apple is out of the business of 'convenient and accessible to us regular folk'.

I made the switch to Sandvox with A2Hosting... and although I now have it all working today it was **** getting here. Everything that could go wrong went wrong.... unlike iWeb and MobileMe which was instant and nearly always worked the first time.

I agree, this topic is history, it's done... but Apple's new direction is scary, for me anyway. They should change iLife to MyLife... meaning those who work within the confines of Cupertino Hdq's. - JamesJM

Another iWeb option, but it's from Adobe so it's really pricey, so I doubt it will give iWeb a run for its money (would that Adobe could make a Dreamweaver Elements)

Kent ~ This is just a tip... You can make text hyperlinks by dragging over the text to highlight it and then clicking on the Insert Link icon:

It is now apparent that iWeb, and iDVD, will no longer be supported by Apple. This is evidenced by the fact that new Macs are shipping with iLife 11 installed but without iWeb and iDVD. iWeb will still continue to work but without the following:

Features No Longer Available Once MobileMe is Discontinued:

◼ Password protection

◼ Blog and photo comments

◼ Blog search

◼ Hit counter

All of these issues can be replaced with 3rd party options.

I found that if I published my site to a folder on my hard drive and then uploaded with a 3rd party FTP client subscriptions to slideshows and the RSS feed were broken. If I published directly from iWeb to the FPT server those two features continued to work correctly.

There's another problem and that's with iWeb's popup slideshows. Once the MMe servers are no longer online the popup slideshow buttons will not display their images.

However, Roddy McKay and I have figured out a way to modify existing sites with those slideshows and iWeb itself so that those images will display as expected once MobileMe servers are gone. How to is described in this tutorial: #26 - How to Modify iWeb So Popup Slideshows Will Work After MobileMe is Discontinued.

Apple has announced that iLife is now an unsupported product and those iApps will only be available thru the App Store from now on. However, the boxed iLife 11 at the online Apple Store (Store button at the top of the page) and those still on the shelves of retailers will include iWeb and iDVD. Those two apps were listed in small, gray text on the iLife 11 box that I bought. Personally, if I already didn't have a copy I would purchase one to have it for reinstallation purposes if ever needed.

At Last!!!!! ... New boss new attitude!

AppleInsider reports that it has heard from a customer who emailed Apple CEO Tim Cook expressing dismay over the discontinuation of several MobileMe features as the service is transitioned to iCloud. Surprisingly, the customer reports that he received a personal phone call from Cook's office noting that the company is indeed "open" to bringing some of the features back if customer demand supports their return.

"Specifically, I bemoaned the loss of sync services (syncing application preferences, keychain, etc.) and the loss of iDisk," the reader said of his initial email to Cook . "I was pleasantly surprised to get a call from his office just now.

According to Cook's people, while there are no plans to add those particular services to iCloud at this time, "Apple is open to it if there's enough feedback on the subject."

It is unclear exactly what aspect of the customer's email triggered a personal phone call from Apple's staff, as phone responses have typically been limited to resolving technical issues where discussions over the phone could expedite the resolution of the problems. Apple executives have on occasion personally responded to customer emails, with Steve Jobs being the highest-profile responder from the company over the past few years. Tim Cook has carried on that tradition since becoming CEO late last month, with other executives

If you like your iDisk, like I do, and other sync services, then email Tim Cook, <edited by host> , and let him know. The more feedback they get, the more likely it is that they'll add these services onto iCloud down the road.

What happens to the iWeb sites that I’ve published to MobileMe?

You can continue publishing iWeb sites to MobileMe through June 30, 2012, even after moving to iCloud. With iWeb you can easily move a site published to MobileMe to another web hosting service and you should do so before that date. Please read this article for details.
