Lost all my Notes on iPad 2!

I was on a 3 week vacation and took a lot of notes during that time. When I got back, I wanted to e-mail them to myself. When I brought up the Notes app all my notes (about 15 of them with a lot of details in each) had disappeared. When I called Apple Support they said I should have backed them up regularly and that the iPad is not a storage device (good to know!) Obviously, I don't take my desktop with me on vacation to be able to use iTunes to back my iPad up daily, right after I create my note, so I am not caught by this surprise. Of course, I can e-mail it to myself as a backup as soon as I create the note. But that assumes I have Wi-Fi access available wherever I go on vacation. So unless anyone has any ideas on this, I have just lost a lot of detailed information that I was going to use to write a travel blog. How does something just disappear from a device without it being deleted or without a serious failure of the component that persists it?

Very disappointed with the iPad and Apple, especially considering how jaded everyone is with this company and its products. From that statement you may realize that I am a new Apple product user and not as enamored.

Hi,

I have a new iPad2, I am also a new user of this device, and have lost my notes from the Notes app too. The only action done on the iPad yesterday, when this happened, was to sync some photos from my PC, ( not Apple ), to the iPad, I went nowhere near the Notes or Mail apps on the iPad but later in the day when I went to the notes there was only one from 3 days past and the rest from that day were gone, and one from the day before was still there ??.....I have read all the posts here and done all the searching for them with no luck. Apple Phone Suppot line couldn't help either. I don't expect to find then now.

I now have chosen to turn the notes off in the Mail, contacts calendars , as I dont want to have them sent to email. Will they now stay in notes on my iPad if I back up on iTunes often.....or what do I do to get them to stay there on the iPad2 ?

Cheers

We have corresponded on another thread about this! Can you confirm your email account type - ie., IMAP or POP, Better still, give the suffix, eg .....@hotmail.co.uk

I have reviewed this thread and it appears that the settings for notes and their association with email accounts might only apply to IMAP accounts. If this is so, and your email account is not IMAP, then you will have eliminated your emails as having any bearing on your situation.

Hey Alan,

Yes you may be right about that........However, the fact remains that the notes went missing without changing anything, re settings, in the first place.....after I discovered they were gone I read this and other posts, then did a search of all email accounts..folders...apps etc suggested in these and other like posts, still without changing any settings, and they were nowhere to be found ,as others here have done.....so now not expecting to retrieve them as they have gone for good, I have turned off the notes in the gmail section and any new notes now will not be synced between the PC and the iPad so I am very much hoping that if I now add a note on the iPad it will stay there until I decide to move it or trash it.

Do you think that this is what will happen now ???

There is no saying what will happen! The iPad is a great wee tool but, as borne out by this forum, it is not without its problems.

You mentioned in another thread about doing some carpentry with power tools etc. Keep them handy because with the number of threads in this forum about dead iPads you might have to make a box for yours some day!

My notes had been synced to remotely to gmail, under the label "Notes" (this change must have happened when I updated to IOS5. Recently I had lost most of my notes except for one that I had edited recently.

In an effort to tidy up my gmail, I renamed the "Notes" label under "Ideas/Notes"

My fix was to go into gmail, search for a word in one of my notes, find the label, and then re-label all the messages as "Notes" without any label directory.

Once this was done, I closed notes (double tap the button for task manager) and then reopened it. All my notes where back.

May also be worth double checking your Settings->Mail,Contacts,Calendars->Gmail and checking that notes are enabled.

Hope this helps, am fairly relieved myself.

Changing settings on e-mail accounts saved me a lot of anguish over whether I has lost anything worthwhile in 3 months of notes. At first it didn't work, so then I tried a lot of different accounts and finally it did work. Unfortunately, I was frustrated and did not try different things one at a time and keep notes. Sorry.

Therefore the only accurate advice I can share is don't give up hope and don't delete anything. Also keep up the pressure on Apple Support, we (I am a small shareholder.) can afford to hire more people and pay them better and reward them for solving tough problems, and, most of all, support the open forums.

Apple ought to put up a $50,000 prize for any team, inside or outside Apple, that can come up with the actual cause of this problem (or problems, it may be like cancer). Someone should be able to make this problem repeat itself. If you can figure that out, you should be paid, at least in $5,000 of your choice of Apple products.

The same thing seems to have happened to me -- I deleted a note a week ago -- all was good -- then today I created a pdf file and emailed it to myself using the iphone. Then when I went to the ipad, it said it wanted to update -- so I said ok -- now the iphone, & ipad don't show any notes. I backup to the cloud - so apple's comments on other posts about the iphone/ipad not being a storage device, doesn't hold much water. I don't have a gmail account set up, just my iphone/ipad to a .me account, and my regular cable-modem address as my email address.

I went to the deleted folder section and found only the note that I had deleted a week ago --- really starts to give me some pause as to whether I can trust the device to save information that I put there, even when I backup to apple's icloud

It takes time to enter names/address, notes and I don't have the time to do this multiple times, if the iphone/ipad is going to be nothing more than a toy.

Hi. I lose all my notes due to being advised to close my aol acct because my iPad aol mail had stopped sending and forwarding my email called relaying. I asked repeatedly to the apple support will I lose anything, ANYTHING and was assured that I would not. Aol said the same thing, so I closed each account and used other server and LOST ALL my notes. Beware of just following advice before reading from people like us that are the guinny pigs while they make MILLIONS and use our time. We should start a private forum and make them pay us....go all you clever smart people.

Just a thought...still have the relay problem...Elizabeth
