Software Update killed my Internet Connection?

Hi. I performed the latest software update last night which included an iTunes update and one for a 15" Powerbook. This morning, I restarted my machine and it won't connect to the internet at all. I restarted again and it didn't work. If I click on the wireless network icon at the top of my desktop the 'spinwheel' starts and never stops. For some reason I feel the update must have messed up my wireless internet connection. Anyone else have this problem or know of a solution?

I had a similar problem with my other PowerBook G4 with 10.3.9 installed. Your computer may have switched the preference in your network setting. I use an Airport and the preference somehow switched from specific to Automatic. So try going into System Preferences, then Network, then configure the Airport so it reads specific or preferred with your network information, not Automatic. That might help.

I have a similar problem.

I updated iTunes Quicktime and Safari by downloading the updates and then installing them.

I immediately lost communication with the office wireless network. I can connect to the router but I get no internet or office network access. These facilities still work, thankfully, on the ethernet wired network.

I saw on Mac fixit a suggestion that it might be an iTunes problem - but deleting iTunes and its plist + a restart did not fix the problem.

I tried resetting the location file, tried a new one altogether, specified the network to no avail.

Anyone have a solution?

I did the Software Update yesterday & then I too couldn't get on to Safari, Firefox or IE but luckily Netscape still worked and I found the solution in another post (restart after you finish the steps below, do the repair & verify).

Good luck.

Sorry, that didn't work for alot of people.

SparkyJ, here's what I did, and it worked fine.

1) Move iTunes onto the Desktop.
2) Run Disk Utility
3) Go to HD>Library>Receipts and trash all iTunes .pkg files EXCEPT for iTunesX.pkg and iTunesPhoneDriver.pkg
4) empty Trash.
5) move iTune from Desktop back to 'Applications'.

Hey presto. you should now be able to repair permissions again.

I also ran the auto-software update and updated itunes, ipod, os-X, etc. Upon restart, internet non-functioning. Can connect to wireless router, but no IP address assigned. interestingly, had no problem connecting via a wire so I assumed (?) the problem sits with the internal airport card/drivers.

also, deleted my auto-connect and keychain password. If I try to select a network by clicking on the airport icon at the top, I get the multi-colored spinning wheel that never stops.

after several re-starts and a bit of tinkering. I got connected to the internet again. I did have to go to network pref and set to 'join a specific network' (the update seemed to have changed that setting to auto).

I saw the earlier posts refer to some permission problems. I ran the disk utility but it always crashes about 1/2 of the way through. A message appears saying the connection to the disk management tool was lost and the disk utility must be restarted. of course, no matter how many times I run it, I get the same problem.

I wish I had a miagic solution for you, hopefully someone at Apple sees this and realizes they have a problem.

what I did:

(1) restart computer
(2) don't click on the airport icon but rather go to 'system pref', 'network', and the click on 'airport' and 'configure'.
(3) change from 'automatic' to 'join a specific network'
(4) at this point, it connected to my router, but still wouldn't assign an IP and get me online. so, I....
(5) restarted again...everything ok.

if anyone reading this thinks I should be concerned with the problems I'm having with the disk util. please let me know. I suppose as long as everything's working, I should leave well enough alone.

Yeah, mine "magically" started working again. While I'm happy it's working I always worry that it's stop going again just as suddenly...

The problems with Disk Utility you're seeing have been discussed but there does not appear to be a solution as yet.

As far as I can tell it appears to be harmless (doing the same thing in single user mode shows no errors) but I am still hoping that Apple are working on a proper solution.

I have also been unable to connect to internet via Airport since doing software update. Also had Disk Utility internal error until I trashed library itunes files, but still can't connect via Airport. Have tried suggestion of changing Location in Network (System Preferences) from Automatic to a specific location without effect. Anyone know of a fix?
Thanks.

Just to give some more info on my problem. I spent some time online with Apple Care. The consultant did not appear to be familiar with the problem. Under system preferences in Network, we named a new location which at first didn't seem to work. Then logged of and on, and suddenly, I now had a connection through Airport. Whether this change had anything to do with it I don't know.

Add another 'me too' to the Software Update's murder of my Airport connection. However, I have not yet done the iTunes update. I did do the Java Security, Quick Time, Security Update 2005-009, Safari, Aluminum Powerbook Battery, and the Airport Software update. With all those updates it would be hard to find the culprit, but iTunes was not the problem for me and yet I lost my Airport connection.
I tried the prefs/network/airport and checked out the specific vs automatic network choice. All network choices (that I could find) were specifically as I had set them up: not an 'automatic' to be seen.
I can get on the net via the modem and wire, but would like to get my airport back.

I encountered the same problem as described above (i.e. losing the IP address on my wife's G3 iBook running 10.3.9 after updating iTunes and Safari). I followed both sets of procedures listed above and together they resolved my issue.

More precisely, following "dplfx":

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=309223&tstart=0

1) Move iTunes onto the Desktop.
2) Run Disk Utility
3) Go to HD>Library>Receipts and trash all iTunes .pkg files EXCEPT for iTunesX.pkg and iTunesPhoneDriver.pkg
4) empty Trash.
5) move iTune from Desktop back to 'Applications'.
6) restart after you finish the steps above & do the repair & verify again

Then following Eric S.:
(1) restart computer
(2) don't click on the airport icon but rather go to 'system pref', 'network', and the click on 'airport' and 'configure'.
(3) change from 'automatic' to 'join a specific network'
(4) at this point, it connected to my router, but still wouldn't assign an IP and get me online. so, I....
(5) restarted again...everything ok.

This seemed to resolve the issue. Not sure what I did but nothing else worked.

Ditto. Thanks to Eric and all involved!

Ok, I spoke too soon. It fixed everything except that when my computer goes to sleep, I come back and my PowerBook appears to be connected but nothing is actually connected. (iChat doesnt work, no email, etc)

If I use the toolbar up top to "Turn Airport Off" then back on, nothing happens. However, if I go to System Prefs > Network: Select AirPort > Press Disconnect > Brings up Airport Status > Press "Turn Airport Off" ... wait 5 sec ..then turn Airport back on, I get connected.

Which is great except that my computer sleeps if I am away for 15 min, so I am stuck doing this a lot.

Any suggestions?
