iMac 2011 3.4GHz 27" won't sleep

My iMac won't go to sleep. If I leave it on, it only ever puts the display to sleep after the designated time, but the HDD never goes off.

If I select Sleep from the Apple menu in the top left, the display goes off, then the HDD powers down. Then after a second or two, it all comes back to life.

Any help appreciated.

That is the difference between Force sleep and Auto sleep!

You can Force sleep the computer anytime you like, but it will not Auto sleep if certain processes, certain settings or devices are keeping it awake.

For example, it would not be a good thing if the Computer Auto Slept while it was Updating Software, while Time Machine was updating, while you were Syncing your iPad or iPhone, while you were downloading a Movie, while you were waiting for an important E-Mail, etc.....

Looks like you have lots of stuff running, for starters any number of windows services running in Parallels, Crome or some of those other App's could be creating Disk Activity and preventing auto sleep.

At this point, I can only suggest quitting those Applications and Programs one at a time until you figure out which is preventing auto sleep.

Hi again, it has been some time. I finally got my iMac back from the apple store - it took 45days! to replace the screen and solve the sleep issue.

They first thought was a logic board issue, but they resetted the PRAM and VRAM and now it works!

After following this

http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379

try setting sleep time to 1 minute for both screen and HD and wait 2 minutes to check if it goes to sleep.

Hope it helps.

Greetings

I had the same 'won't stay asleep' problem and I came across a reference to the Console (Apps/Utilities) and found that there were a whole load of entries which mention Adobe Air and BBC iPlayer failures. I don't use iPlayer so I uninstalled it and the system seems OK now. May uninstall Air but I'm not sure if I need it. I assume that if I need it and I've uninatalled it I'll get the offer to re-install it.

Same issue here. Sleep worked fine on Snow Leopard. Installed Lion and auto-sleep suddenly quits working. I've reset SMC, I don't have any apps running and it just won't sleep. Force Sleep works fine. Time Machine is disabled, in fact, that USB drive is completely unplugged. The only USB devices plugged in are an optical mouse and my HP printer. The printer is always powered off and I have it set to not share.
