Cannot activate iMessage

Whenever I try to sign in to iMessage using my Apple ID, it says "Could not sign in. Please check your network connection and try again." The problem, is that I'm connected to my wifi network and have 3 bars. Please help!

iPod touch, Other OS, iOS 5.0

im on an ipod touch 4g and updated it to iOS 5 and i open messages and it says sign in with my apple ID, which i know is definitely the right email address and password after pressing sign in, it takes me to iMessage where it says 'people will message you using your email address. what email do you want to use' so i use the same hotmail address as my ID, press next and it says 'iMessage Activation unable to verify email because it is already in use'. How can it be in use?? is this a glitch or error or do i need to do something else?

Ive checked the settings its the same hotmail email and asks for my password to sign in and then the same message comes up again about it not being able to verify :/

what do i need to do?
