What happens to iWeb when there's no Mobile Me?

I was disappointed to learn that Apple will turn off Mobile Me next year. I'm a teacher and I liked using iWeb to create a small website for my classes (Homework, Activities,etc.). It was easy and the pages looked OK to me. I haven renewed my Mobile Me subscription when I bought a new iMac in January. Now I have to go through a bunch s__t to get a refund.

I am not interested in iClouds, iPhones, iPads, etc. I just don't want all the extra stuff. I just liked having an easy to post a website and create decent looking webpages.

You have to pay for iCloud, right? If I don't use and don't intend to use any iOS devices, what good is iCloud? Does it have any value?

What happens to my iDisk after June 30, 2012? Does it disappear?

Will iWeb be killed as well? I am told that you can publish webpages with iWeb to 3rd party sites, but if the application is no longer supported, it won't be long before it won't work correctly.

Are there any applications as good as and EASY as iWeb to use?

Apple isn't going to update the program. Sandvox has just released a program that makes it possible to convert your iWeb to Sandvox. There are drawbacks to Sandvox but there were to iWeb as well. One drawback is that it quit working. I couldn't get my sites back and Apple couldn't tell me how and these forums had no solutions that worked for me. Sandvox is a good program that is fairly easy to learn, their cusotmer support responds well, and they update the program regularly. There' no point in flogging this dead horse.

I wasn't saying it quit working for you. It quit for me. I couldn't get it to locate my websites o so I could edit them. Somehow it lost its directory despite finding one or two pages. Apple support and these forums had no advice that led to recovering the files. I would have had to completely redo them in iWeb and since Apple had no plans almost two years ago to update iWeb nor do they now, I just went ahead and found an alternative. What I am saying in brief is: 1. If iWeb fails you, you are up the creek with no alternatives because nobody is there to help you. 2. There is no future in iWeb. and 3. there are alternatives and instead of waiting for a crisis that leaves you in the lurch you can find an alternative. 4. You can continue as is and wait for the bomb to go off which it eventually will.

Apple cancelled mobileme, so any sites hosted there are no longer available. However, the Domain file that iWeb uses to generate your sites is not at mobileme, it is in your computer and should be retrievable unless you erased the hard disk. I am very aware of the situation with iWeb and have chosen to continue using it until it no longer does what I need it to do. Then I will migrate to something else. At this time, however, I do not need to change.

I understand what is supposed to be but it wasn't. The DOmain file was there but no matter what I tried and I got lots of advice, the files would not open the two sites I had created. That's the facts. I never used Mobileme and never had a Mobile me account. I used another service. It matters little what one says about Mobileme or iWeb the facts are the same. Someday iWeb will quit working. Apple is not going to support it. It's even likely that by now if you call them about iWeb, Theyll say, "iWhat?"

iWeb still should "work." You are just publishing to a different web hosting service. Using MobileMe with iWeb was very easy. Now, it's still easy, but there are a couple of "tweaks" and work arounds to get all the iWeb features to work. If you stay current with iWeb "news," you can do almost everything that you could do with MobileMe... and it's less expensive. You don't need to ask Apple folks for any help because there are so many people in the iWeb "community" that are willing to share information tips and work arounds. I believe that there are plenty of helpful folks in "cyberspace" willing to share their expertise. You can "google" iWeb and should get plenty of help.

I will stay with iWeb because I don't feel like I want to spend more time (and $$) learning a new application. It's good enough for me.

It might be that the issue with iWeb "not working" may be an issue with your computer. Perhaps that domain file got "corrupted." I don't know exactly what that means, but I do know if a file gets "corrupted" and you don't have a backup, you're in trouble. In this situation, I don't believe it would have made a difference if iWeb was still been supported or not.

I love working with iWeb and it's still very easy to publish to the dropbox client, which is great for personal use. I like that it's not some simple blogspot template, and it's really easy to learn. I've never used the MobileMe services and I just bought 4G hosting from Godaddy.com which is cheap and comes with all of these benefits. It just seems like there's going to be a lot of holes because of MobileMe, and are they going to stop support for iWeb? Seems like it's gone on new Macs, but that could just be me.

Hope this helps anyone who was in my position. I know a lot of people are not going to like this and I've made all the arguments against it myself, but my website is very important to me and earlier this year I finally decided that I am going to have to break down and learn to use something else due to the fact that iWeb is eventually a dead end no matter how you look at it. I'm a writer and felt I didn't have a lot of time and energy to devote to learning something new and complicated.

I bought Freeway express and Sandvox at the App Store and also looked (and read) everything I could on the subject of website programs. I also looked at other programs such as Dreamweaver, etc, but nothing seemed to match the ease and flexibility of iWeb which I LOVED. Still, knowing I had to change, I experimented a bit and built a site that met about 3/4 of my expectations with Sandvox and pulled the plug for the first time in years on iWeb. I was surprised and happy, knowing that iWeb is eventually going to become a dead horse. That said, I needed three columns and while there is a forum at Sandvox, no one could solve my column issue (and a few other issues) satisfactorily.

I then read an interesting argument about Wordpress vs iWeb (Wordpress.Org and not Wordpress.Com) in a forum and argued intensely against it because of all the programs I had looked at, I absolutely HATED Wordpress the most. It seemed so complicated, totally counter intuitive and the program most unlike iWeb. But I did like the fact that it is web-based and doesn't sit on your computer as well as SEO optimized. Then some tech guy I know suggested that I quit comparing Wordpress to iWeb and simply look at it as learning a new thing. Once again, I argued intensely against it, but given that Sandvox didn't fully meet my needs, I started experimenting with Wordpress. I finally broke down and bought this cheap crash course which was broken down in small 6-8 minute segments that I could watch at my convince and it worked. I was able to of live with Wordpress with the site I always wanted to have. This is my "humble" Wordpress webite that I built http://johnnyrobish.com.

Lastly and perhaps most importantly, I also wanted to mention that since swithching to Wordpress, the traffic to my website has honestly tripled due to the Wordpress SEO capabilities. Tripled almost instantly! I know a lot of you are going to argue like crazy against Wordpress, but its really a fantastic program with TONS more options than iWeb once you learn it. And you can learn it - because I did Hope this helps and good luck.

While investigating alternatives to iWeb I did try Wordpress and its probaly no worse than any other CMSs which are designed for filling in the blanks rather than creating websites.

I tried one of the newer responsive templates since its essential to have a version of your site that is viewable on smart phones nowadays. Hit the Blog button on this page to see it...

It took me longer to figure out Wordpress, modify the CSS and work out how to get the media players to work properly than it did to create a new site from scratch building my own stylesheet!

The design I created has folding navigation and columns like the Wordpress one but uses only a fraction of the amount of code as you can see if you look at the source of both...

Keep on using the iWeb applicaton and publish your domaine to a site which caters to Mac folk and distances you from the perils of Microsoft and others of its ilk. Try www.macmate.me and you will see that you can actually host your site with the same look and feel of what Apple fomerly offered. Too bad the admin folk at Apple didn't recognize the value in carrying on with what was a very comfortable product. I gave up trying to convince them otherwise. There is no accounting for dumb-*** decsions, I suppose …
