What happens to iWeb when there's no Mobile Me?

I was disappointed to learn that Apple will turn off Mobile Me next year. I'm a teacher and I liked using iWeb to create a small website for my classes (Homework, Activities,etc.). It was easy and the pages looked OK to me. I haven renewed my Mobile Me subscription when I bought a new iMac in January. Now I have to go through a bunch s__t to get a refund.

I am not interested in iClouds, iPhones, iPads, etc. I just don't want all the extra stuff. I just liked having an easy to post a website and create decent looking webpages.

You have to pay for iCloud, right? If I don't use and don't intend to use any iOS devices, what good is iCloud? Does it have any value?

What happens to my iDisk after June 30, 2012? Does it disappear?

Will iWeb be killed as well? I am told that you can publish webpages with iWeb to 3rd party sites, but if the application is no longer supported, it won't be long before it won't work correctly.

Are there any applications as good as and EASY as iWeb to use?

iWeb 3 is iWeb 09 which is part of the iLife 09 package or iLife 11.

I'm not sure how many people want to use web sharing in this way, I'm sure most would just upload to another server and I'm sure that they already realise that they would need to either use the built in ftp to do this or select the publish to a local folder option.

Look, firstly, do not make sweeping statements with lots of assumptions on your part about me that are incorrect.

Next, iWeb 09 has been updated to work with Intel Mac's, which is why it works on Snow Leopard. iWeb 06 will not work with Intel Mac's but only with Power Mac's...

Incorrect...

"iLife '06 requires Mac OS X version 10.3.9 or version 10.4.3 or later (Mac OS X version 10.4.4 recommended), a Macintosh® computer with a PowerPC G4, PowerPC G5, or Intel® Core™ processor..." ( Source)

Precisely, dgfoster. And btw, I exaggerated… I haven't 'completely' given up on Freeway. 🙂 I did last night because during the trial run of two specific tasks I could not get anywhere with Freeway while I at least got both partially figured out with RapidWeaver and SandVox.

It's one of those things where, if I keep trying Freeway, it will suddenly hit me.. "Oh, THAT's how you do it".. and then I'm off to the races. I'll keep experimenting with Freeway if for no other reason than…. it's apparently the only one of those three that allows for Theme tweaking, even completely building your own. - JamesJM

I also am concerned about what is going to happen to iWeb. If it's not supported, I suppose there will be no updates. Soon, iWeb will become obsolete. I understand that may take a while, but from other responses it seems alternative sites for publishing may cause portions of iWeb to be unusable. Boo, hiss!

Toad,

The iWeb update last week was a minimal maintenance update connected to usability in Lion. Since Apple has said that Mobile me continues to be supported until 30th June next year that presumably means continuing maintenance updates for all programs that use it including Aperture and iPhoto regarding photo galleries and iWeb.

Had the update been a more significant update it might have supported your proposition. A more significant update would have addressed some or all of the issues faced by those having to migrate to third party hosting - the inability to have functional commenting from iWeb, the inability to have password protections, the inability to have a functional hit counter and so on. Those limitations of iWeb are well known to Apple as they appear in iWeb support literature from Apple. If we get an update with even one of those issues fixed then we can start to hope that iWeb has a future but as it stands the evidence suggests that iLife '11 was the last time iLife includes web site development tools. Looking at the iDVD update there is a good chance that it too will be dropped from the next version of iLife. It appears that as far as Apple is concerned the only use for video is YouTube and its kin, and Facebook and Twitter have replaced the need for web sites for individuals.

PS. Say hello to Mole and Ratty for me when you see them next.

While it is possible to put a site on dropbox it is only practical for a personal site with low traffic and is not important to you. Dropbox terms and conditions give them the right to delete any source of large traffic activity. There is also the issue that not all iWeb features will work on non-MobileMe hosts. Unless Apple makes an update to iWeb those limitations will remain and some of them such as commenting on blog posts are important. It is true that if you like to waste a lot of time you can find and install 3rd party solutions for the things that won't work directly from iWeb, or you can move to a better alternative like RapidWeaver and pay for proper hosting. The recent update to iWeb was possibly the last we will see and there is a good chance it will not be included in the next version of iLife. It is time to think about abandoning the program entirely.

Well, gang I'mm just getting into this discussion because the other day I tried opening my websites in iWeb for the first time after upgrading to Lion. It proved nearly impossible. I did all suggestions to find my websites and edit them, none of which worked. I called Apple tech support. What I learned is somewhat startling. Apple has no intention continuing iWeb. So I began looking for some program that can actually open the iWeb sites and edit them. I've had no luck. One possibility does not wokr on Lion. Since it is free there is no support to it. Now I can't remember the name.

I really need to update my sites but iWeb cannot find them. And no software I have found will open the pages or documents.

I'm a bit dismayed at this despite having had as many have the lost websites problem before.

So I think, Old Toad, while I praise you for being optimistic, it is perhaps not justified.

Sorry for the spelling I am dislex..

May I ask a rhetorical question: If you have a program that dose what you want and that program runs on a OS that works why change/updrade if that change or upgrade will stop the program from working?

Answers I can think of:

1) There is no resion.

2) You no longer need to use the program.

3) Some one is holding a metaphorical gun to you.

Some stupid questions:

If/when Apple stop iWeb will my working install of iWeb stop working?

Is Apple going to give an alternitive website bilding program?

I know Apple are stopping "mobile me" infaver of "iCloud" is it that "iCloud" will not support iWeb?

I'm sorry if that sounds a bit harsh.

Try sandvox http://www.karelia.com/

Or OSX 4 or 5 or 6 running iweb in VMWare Fusion
