What happens to iWeb when there's no Mobile Me?

I was disappointed to learn that Apple will turn off Mobile Me next year. I'm a teacher and I liked using iWeb to create a small website for my classes (Homework, Activities,etc.). It was easy and the pages looked OK to me. I haven renewed my Mobile Me subscription when I bought a new iMac in January. Now I have to go through a bunch s__t to get a refund.

I am not interested in iClouds, iPhones, iPads, etc. I just don't want all the extra stuff. I just liked having an easy to post a website and create decent looking webpages.

You have to pay for iCloud, right? If I don't use and don't intend to use any iOS devices, what good is iCloud? Does it have any value?

What happens to my iDisk after June 30, 2012? Does it disappear?

Will iWeb be killed as well? I am told that you can publish webpages with iWeb to 3rd party sites, but if the application is no longer supported, it won't be long before it won't work correctly.

Are there any applications as good as and EASY as iWeb to use?

I have used iWeb to build several websites and liked the way it worked. What I didn't like is the method of storing the information on my computer that resulted in the program not being able to find the websites after upgrades to OSX. It happend often. After Lion, I had a nightmare with all kinds of stuff. I finally got around to trying to do a number of updates to my websites which are not on Mobile Me but an alternate host. They wrok fine and still do.

HERE IS THE BIG PROBLEM! MobileME iCloud, alternate host. iWeb is no more. It already shows massive signs of neglect, but Apple does not plan to continue upgrading it. What we need is an alternate thet will be able to open and edit our iWeb, preferably an alternate that will be around a while.

I spent hours reading discussions on how to get your sites back. I followed instructions tediously. Failing to succeed and I have TIme Machine Bakups to March which was well before my last updates to the sites. Nothing has worked. I called Apple. I was then informed that there will be no more iWeb. Online searches on the subject confirm this.

I do agree with TopSteve that Sandvox is THE alternative. Why ? First of all because a lot of web hosts do not support iWeb for 100%, so some features will be lost, among which the hit counter. Secondly, because Sandvox is very much like iWeb (fool proof) and more advanced than iWeb. I always used iWeb, but I'm going to switch to Sandvox.

Why is Sandvox better than iWeb?

Whether Sandvox is considered "better" than iWeb depends on your particular needs. For example, if you appreciate the convenience of integrated SEO (Search Engine Optimization) for your business site, then you may consider Sandvox better. Or you may appreciate that, unlike iWeb, a Sandvox site's text responds to Safari's View > Zoom In command for visually impaired visitors. ...Here's what some iWeb graduates who now use Sandvox have to say:

"I used iWeb, but all the things that took lots of time using iWeb, was just a click away using Sandvox. It is also a real experience changing the looks of your website with just one click of the mouse."

"Originally, we used iWeb to develop our website. We came up with a nice clean website but found out that it was virtually invisible on the internet. We received a few quotes from SEO consultants and were astounded at their fees. So, we set out to develop our own SEO friendly site. Turns out Sandvox was the solution."

"For a noobie (besides iWeb), what surprised me was that with each revision of my website, I kept discovering more and more features that I could incorporate that made my site better and better."

"Well, as I have several websites online Sandvox for me is an easy way to administrate them — it's easier than iWeb."

"I wanted to replace Apple's iWeb as my development tool of choice because I had reached the end of iWeb's capabilities and I was moving my site from Apple's MobileMe service to a dedicated site. I chose Sandvox because I felt that it gave me more control over other development tools and I have been able to create a site using a standard design, one that I can change without too many hassles."

I switched. IWeb/Mobileme to SandVox/Machighway.

Sandvox has custom banners, hierarchal menus, easy slideshows...stuff that one can do in iWeb but it isn't that easy. I am learning to love the template style as it requires me to stop just putting stuff on a page willy-nilly, and the new site is a lot neater, though it is now very obviously from a template.

Hugh, thanks for posting your site. As I consider my options for my sites--everything from staying for awhile with iWeb to a new app, I always have difficulty "seeing" my site on the new apps. Oddly, your site has many of the features I'd be looking for. Which template did you use? By the way--if somebody fills out the contact sheet, does that go to you, or do you just develop/publish the site for others?

Nearly any website designing application will create an elegant site. Easy depends on the user. Some will find iWeb easiest, others Sandvox, others Rapidweaver, Freeway Express...

The "elegant" comes from the person creating the site, I believe, more than the software.

Nice site... and yes, you can do that with Sandvox, and Rapidweaver, et al. - JamesJM

I believe I used the template Aurora Blue. My preference was Lake or Earth and Sky, as they have a wider page and a lighter blue, but I am doing the site with someone else, and while I do the site, he has the say on the final site, in effect the client.

Truthfully, he has a much better sense of how things look to other people.

The email goes to him. There is about the same learning curve with Sandvox as there is with iWeb. I love the custom banner, it gave me a chance to take a photo, turn it to b&w, crop it, and use it as a banner.

When I get a chance I will make a couple of tutorials on Sandvox, and using it to switch from iWeb.

Parrish ~ Whilst you await Hugh's reply, the following from Sandvox's "Transitioning from iWeb" page may be useful:

How do I convert my iWeb site to a Sandvox site?

Because of the proprietary themes and page layout structure used by iWeb, there is no way currently to import an iWeb site directly into a Sandvox document. In short, the bulk of a site will need to be rebuilt. Hopefully once the general look and feel is set up (design is chosen, site title entered, banner adjusted, etc.), adding pages and bringing content over is not too much of a pain. You should be able to copy/paste graphics and text from your iWeb site directly into your Sandvox document, either from iWeb directly or, using your favorite web browser, from your published site.

One thing to keep in mind is that because the design used in Sandvox will be necessarily different from the design in iWeb, copying text directly may bring with it unwanted formatting or font changes. When pasting, you can use "Edit → Paste and Match Style" to bring text in using the default style of the Sandvox design. You can also use "Format → Clear Style" after the fact to remove unwanted styling.

Can I make my Sandvox site look exactly like my old iWeb site?

Because of the proprietary nature of Apple’s themes, this is unlikely. Sandvox is not able to reuse the graphics and underlying layout of iWeb’s themes. There are plenty of great designs available for Sandvox. You might consider this transition as an opportunity to freshen up.
