What happens to iWeb when there's no Mobile Me?

I was disappointed to learn that Apple will turn off Mobile Me next year. I'm a teacher and I liked using iWeb to create a small website for my classes (Homework, Activities,etc.). It was easy and the pages looked OK to me. I haven renewed my Mobile Me subscription when I bought a new iMac in January. Now I have to go through a bunch s__t to get a refund.

I am not interested in iClouds, iPhones, iPads, etc. I just don't want all the extra stuff. I just liked having an easy to post a website and create decent looking webpages.

You have to pay for iCloud, right? If I don't use and don't intend to use any iOS devices, what good is iCloud? Does it have any value?

What happens to my iDisk after June 30, 2012? Does it disappear?

Will iWeb be killed as well? I am told that you can publish webpages with iWeb to 3rd party sites, but if the application is no longer supported, it won't be long before it won't work correctly.

Are there any applications as good as and EASY as iWeb to use?

I agree that iWeb will disappear in the future, but then so will everything, including you and me. I do not, however, see the need for an immediate move to another app if iWeb's working fine for you. It's evident, from all the discussions here, that no other app right now that allows you to prepare simple web pages with such elegance and ease. I am on the lookout, and when such an alternative appears I'll be the first to switch.

Yes, in fact iWeb is included in the latest version of the iLife 11 boxed set and still available from the Apple retail store online. You can also get it on Amazon or Ebay.

It is just not available for purcahse separately on the Mac App Store.

Don't be too hasty to change as iWeb is an app and works with both Snow Leopard and Lion so you can still use if you have it and you can still get hold of it if you want it.

Yes included, but not mentioned, as opposed to GarageBand, iMovie and iPhoto. The latest update was to make it fit for Lion and I think that may be the last. As you say, it is not available on the Mac App Store, I wonder why ?😉 All the others are. I'm not complaining, I just think Apple will not continue with it. Too bad, but not a disaster.

hi guys, i know i posted this and said it already but i use to us iweb befroe. now that it will be gone, i found a good solution with jimdo.com, they make it easy to create a site withthem . you don't even need to know coding and you can build you r site that you made on iweb with them. i'm just trying to help becaus i will miss iweb but what can we do if they already doing this?

With the Mac App Store Apple are trying to make things more digital, so getting rid of the CD's and DVD's, so the Lion upgrade was via the App Store only and no DVD version available. This is why. GarageBand, iMovie and iPhoto were all updated so they are all included in the App Store individually. As iWeb and iDVD were not updated, they are not available through the App Store.

The update to Snow Leopard was still available as a DVD as the App Store did not exist then and iWeb and iDVD were included in the boxed set of iLife 11, even though iWeb and iDVD were not updated. This is why. If they were not updated, then they are no longer included for individual purcahse via the App Store.

Until something better comes along, using an online site builder is a sensible option if you want to stick with drag and drop.

Do make sure that the one you sign up with will create a mobile version of your site - as a lot of them are doing now. Otherwise you will be left in the dust along with all those who are sticking with iWeb!

I haven't seen any sign of the other drag and drop software developers coming up with flexible designs so, for the time being, they are almost as useless as iWeb except for the fact that they are maintaining compatibility with Facebook if that is important to you.

Has any changes been made that would allow the blog, comments, podcast etc to work using an outside host (i.e. GoDaddy) in place of MobileMe? I am trying to determine if to create a website for a client using iWeb or Rapidweaver. So disappointed Apple still has not announced anything in regards to iWeb and the hosting aspect of it. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

The blog comments have never worked if you publish an iWeb site to an external host - it has always ever been MobileMe only and you have to use a third party comment system of which there are many - Disqus or IntenseDebate.

I would suggest that you go ahead and build the site in iWeb, but just use a different blog and link to it from the iWeb site. This is what I do with my own websites. I have never used the iWeb blog, preferring to use WordPress instead and then I just create a link from my site to my blog. It is musch better and with WordPress, you can update your site online too, so you don't need any kind of domain file either.

I have never heard of them and I think they are one of a number of new companies setting up to fill the gap in the market with MobileMe ending.

There is another company that has just set up called NewMobileMe. MacMate does say that it is coming in Spring 2012.

Personally I use HostExcellence because I want the added benefits of using a server such as the ability to use a CMS such as WordPress and Drupal etc., and FormMail, which MacMate probably does not offer as they are not targetting that area, but I'm sure it will be fine for others who have used MobileMe for a long time and want to continue to use that kind of service.

"iWeb" is an app it will NOT stop working! but its unlikely Apple will make a new version of "iWeb" Its the "Hosting" Apple is stoping. But "iWeb" makes pages/site that can be hosted by most 3rd party hostting services. Apart from some of the Apple spificific(opps my dislex...) parts all of witch have alternatives.

Have a look as "Sandvox" that's the closest thing to iWeb I have found.
