iTunes automatic downloads restricted to one user per computer?

I have the new version of iTunes (10.3) and I am trying to setup the automatic downloads process for TWO users on the same computer. Both my wife and myself have one computer and we both have our own iPods.

I can setup automatic downloads for myself, but when I go to set it up for my wife, I get the following error message:

"The computer is already associated with an AppleID..."

and I get the option to cancel the setup of automatic downloads or something that says "Transfer".

So, it looks like the new automatic download process is restricted to one user per COMPUTER, even though you can have multiple user accounts on the same machine, each with their own iTunes library and Apple ID's.

Has anyone else seen this behavior?

This is stupid Apple, FIX IT!!!!!!!

I have a mac and i have 2 users profiles on it. Each user has their own apple ID. If i want to download a movie from my apple ID i cant because the other person on the DIFFERENT user profile (when u log in profile thing) already associates the COMPUTER with their apple ID!!!!!

What is the point of different user profiles then apple? if i cant watch movies I PAYED FOR on itunes!!!!!!!! This is some kind of trap... so im gonna have to wait 90 days to watch a movie ive just bought??? then the other user cant do anything for 90 days until my apple ID finished on itunes! whoever put the restriction there didnt think it through, i would expect better from apple, for £1,000+ computer and i cant watch a movie... 😠

There is 7 pages of this problem apple, people r annoyed :-/

Also apple,

this 'discussion' has been going on for 3 years!!!!

Here is a quick summary of apple users' thoughts on this matter:

"...

-It might work for Apple, but not in a "modern family".

-Has anyone else seen this behavior?

-having the same problem over here.

-Hoping that Apple will give this problem some thought and attention.

-iTunes 10.3.1 does not fix this problem.

-It makes no sense to limit my computer to one Apple ID for automatic downlods.

-I sure hope Apple revisits this topic. This restriction should be removed for Mac OS X devices which are multi-user.

-what about people who are using multiple accounts across different iTunes Stores?

-yeah, this makes no sense - and I HOPE Apple is aware of that and will fix it in future updates

- Apple needs to fix this to have it work by user

- have the same issue.

-Yah, this needs serious fixing!

-Having 1 Mac AND 1 iphone/ipod touch per person is unrealistic and expensive.

-just discovered this same issue on my computer

-Kind of defeats the purpose of offering multiple user accounts!

-All accounts on laptops and desktop should have auto download at the same time.

-Cound't agree more.

-Apple, please figure it out!

-This become to annoy me...I have multiple accounts for the family and on computer or iPhone/iPad I couldn't use, and with an 90 days waiting list?????

-I have the same issue.

-Fine if you can afford it but not feasible in the real world. Come on Apple stop messing us about.

-Now I feel I was robbed of my iBooks purchases

-Apple, this is too much! 😟

-I've just been victim of another scenario

-We are trying to play by the rules Apple, your process around Apple IDs has been very poorly thought through.

-are treated like thieves by Apple.

-Just discovered this ridiculous issue.

-It would me appreciated by myself and the others on this thread if we could at least get an acknowledgement that these comments are being seen or directed to the people who manage the Apple ID process.

-However the fate is that these are community forums, which apple does not give a * about.

-I have the same symptom for a similar scenario.

-This issue has obviouslly gone on for at least six months and so far not a peep from Apple that this is even a concern or that there is any plan to fix it.

- If not, I want to hear why not. I don't see why a computer with multiple legitimate users couldn't be associated with multiple AppleIDs.

-Just hit this issue myself

..."

those are from the first 2 pages alone, there are 7 total pages and probable alot more on other forums. i cannot be bothered to do the other 5 pages cause the message is obvious already... people are annoyed at this badly thought-out restriction. I know apple takes pride in high customer satisfaction rates, but there aren't many happy customers here 😟

Guys, girls, women, men, EVERYONE: I just called Apple. The extremely nice gentlemen just removed the restriction from iTunes for us. I live with my girlfriend & we both started using the same SUPER computer that I built. She stopped using her POS mini laptop, because I told her to, LOL. Anyway, I downloaded past purchases & then she signed into her own Windows 8 account & opened iTunes & tried to download her past purchases & BOOM. Big fat error message.

This computer is already associated with an Apple ID.

You can download past purchases on this computer with just one Apple ID every 90 days. This computer can be used with a different Apple ID in 70 days.

***? I'd searched for fixes, but there were none & just like this very thread says, there's no way around it. Ah, but there is. A couple of people have stated here & there on Apple Discussions, "JUST CALL APPLE." So I did. About ten minutes ago. On a Saturday. Around 11:30 AM. Yeah, right now. The Apple representative was so nice & was so understanding. He said, & I quote, "It's just a copyright protection that occurs when one user tries to download past purchases & then another user of the same computer tries to download past purchases as well. The block happens right after the second user tries. It's so someone doesn't go from house to house & download music everywhere. It's just for copyright security. But from what I can see here it looks like this isn't the case."

I was like, "It sure is not the case, Sir. We're just law abiding citizens that actually pay for our music these days. And we don't intend on buying another computer for a very very long time. As for a second computer, that's not financially logical. We just want to have two Windows accounts with two separate apple accounts so we can have our own music."

Then he said, "Yeah, that's not a problem. What I can do is remove that block from your accounts this time for you & then you'll be able to download past purchases again with the other account. Just be aware that it may or may not happen again in the future."

I asked, "Oh okay, so going forward we'll still be able to buy & download new music from Apple anytime without restriction, because they're new downloads, correct?"

"Oh, yes Sir, that is correct. It's just old purchases you might have a problem downloading." Which I thought to myself, "Why in the **** would I re-download past purchases again if I already did it once here." Unless our computer needs to get wiped/re-imaged/swap hard drives/stuff like that, but that's about it. I will not be trying to download purchases at friends', family members', strangers' houses whatsoever. No need to. I have my own **** computer for that.

This thing of downloading past purchases on this computer will only need to happen once for us.

So this guy asks me for the two Apple IDs & the computer name of the computer we are using. He matched up the information & cross referenced it, & then told me, "Okay. I see that information here in our records. I just unblocked it for you. You should be good to go now."

Of course I thanked him graciously & said have a nice day. Problem solved. No more & am I ****** off at Apple. I just takes a phone conversation. That's it. Good luck my friends. Take it easy.

And thanks, Apple. You came through. BTW, I am in no way an Apple fanboy. Nor am I a Microsoft fanboy. I happen to also buy from Amazon & Google as well. I'm spread out all over the place. And I will not pay for iTunes Match. **** no. So no one can say I'm biased.
