Authorising computers has got nothing to do with connecting devices - it is authorising the computer for your iTunes account, which you may or may not then connect an iOS device to. And no, there is no way to centrally check which computers are authorised for your account, it can only be individually for each computer in iTunes.

OK, so If I decide to do an annual (virtual) house-cleaning and deauthorize all computers, then go back to the ones which are supposed to be able to get stuff from itunes, Is anything LOST? Is anything DELETED? Will an IOS device be able to sync again? Or, only on an "authorized" computer.

Thanks

Now here's a situation that may deserve its own KB article or discussion.

I bought Apple ipods and Ipads stuff for each of my kids. They have all sync'd them to their own computers with my one, common itunes account. OK This was stupid... I admit it now. But how do I unscramble this egg? I would like to buy each of them theirt OWN itunes account. But they've bought some crappy music on my itunes account which sure as HECK don't need in my itunes account... I want to be able to give them their music and disavow all rights/authorizations to it on my itunes account.

IS THERE ANY KB articles or threads which discuss possible ways of descrambling this egg?

Thanks.

The songs are always part of the account they were purchased with. They cannot be transferred.

This info is embedded in the song file itself. Select a song, right click > get info and click the Summary tab.

You can authorize their computers with your iTunes account for these items and then delete them on yours.

Here's a twist:

I have authorized three computers. Today ON THE SAME COMPUTER with two different internal hard drives I installed Lion. The other hard drive has Leopard. Both have same version of iTunes. I followed the Apple instructions and successfully copied my iTunes Library from one hard drive to the other. I launch iTunes in Lion and after a few minutes it tells me some of the music is not authorized for this COMPUTER (not THIS OS). So I have to enter my and my wifes credentials in order to authorize it as a FOURTH computer. But after retreiving my wife's credentials and completing this series of dialog boxes it throws up a new dialog box saying that this computer is ALREADY authorized.

I wish Apple would spend some of their billions in the bank on better programmers and databases.

@Chris CA

As stated in my post, iTunes said my COMPUTER was already authorized AFTER it told me it wasn't and that I had to authorize it - so I dutifully went through the process.

The final dialog box, after authorizing was complete, stated that the computer was already authorized, and the dialog showed only three installs, which is what I had originally, and I never deauthorized any computers or the other OS.

Perhaps before Lion or before the latest version of iTunes, what you stated is true, or if you go through some other sequence, but I followed Apple's instructions in KB Article HT1449. BTW, that article does not state anything about authorizing or deauthorizing your account when moving your iTunes library. Perhaps because I had not yet opened iTunes in Lion it triggered the authorization process, but my point is that after all going through the process they insisted on, iTunes tells me I didn't have to authorize my computer again and my number of authorized computers remained the same.

Wacky.

Wacky.

I understand it is messed up

As far as the article not mentioning authorizng when moving a library, you don't need to authorize anything unless you have purchases from iTunes store, so it should probably be a footnote in that article.

In order to see which devices are authorized on your account:

Open iTunes

Click Store

Click Account

Click View Account

Enter your password

Look in the second section iTunes in the Cloud

To the far right you'll see Manage Devices

Once it's clicked you will see all of the devices currently authorized in iTunes/on your account

I was going to say, "Hope this helps," but based on the above, I'm pretty sure it did!

Thanks guys...

For anyone who may come across this thread, Tina is incorrect. That doesn't show all the systems that are authorized to a given account, only those which are set up for automatic downloads or redownloading, which isn't the same as those that are authorized to an account to play protected content. There is no way to see a list of those systems which are authorized to the account.

Regards.

Great post, thanks!

With new iTunes 11:

Sign in using your Apple ID

Click your email address/Apple ID in the upper left of the UI

Click "Account"

Click "Manage Devices" in the 'iTunes In the Cloud' section. There you can remove individual devices.

Princple is the same, just a little change in the UI.
