Software Update 1.1

Which "good" converter would that be?

Personally, I haven't updated, and probably won't until these issues are resolved (hopefully 1.1.1 will be released quickly in response to these major problems).

I have no idea whether I'd have any problems or not, but I'd rather not take the chance of having to do a complete restore and transfer all my music back over. I use Nero Recode 2 to convert stuff for my iPod, and nobody here or on iLounge has posted whether Recode 2 files exhibit this glitch or not.

It messed up my 30GB iPod, now I can't turn on the backlight.

May I ask what programs you are using for your iPod?

What kind of computer and operating system?

Sorry about the snoopy questions, I am compiling data to see why these bugs dont happen on all iPods.

Will have to see if it's iTunes or the iPod update.

Guys,how do you return to the version 1.0 software if this new update screws up your i-pod?I am thinking of updating the software but just want to make sure that there are no problems returning back if I it screws up.

This is highly frustrating... as it seems the new update cripples higher quality video encodings being able to transfer to the ipod... with software 1.0 I could transfer a 520, 640 or 700 resolution encoding to the ipod... now attempting to do the same thing results in nothing... it has to be 320 resolution or lower

WHere did you get this crap from? If you do not know, please do not specualate and post things that are not true. It is happening regardless of OS.

Well, wether to update or not depends on what you iPod is doing now. Yah, there are some big glitches with this update, not only the menu button-backlight thing, but also in the fact that some files you encode yourself via 3rd party apps like FFmpegX don't work anymore.

I have a 30 GB, and Mac 10.4.4.

If your iPod is working fine now, don't update until a fix comes out. If it's not, then you might weigh the effects of update vs not.

I updated it, as on the morning of the 10th, my iPod lost its mind. It started reseting itself over and over until the battery ran out. Even after a restore, it still reset at least half the times i woke it from sleep. (as it had been doing since i got it for christmas)

The update completely fixed that, thank goodness. I can live with the other glitches for a while until a fix comes out, but it's up to you whether or not you do it.

Just to clarify for everyone (I've been following this since late Tuesday night over on the iLounge forum):

1) The bug with video being mentioned does not show up on the 30GB model. Out of the 22 page thread on iLounge, one person said he had a problem with video, but that was there with the 1.0 firmware too for him, so likely his iPod is just defective.
2) The menu button backlight toggle is gone for both models
3) It does not have to be Videora, as others have had problems with things encoded in iSquint and Handbrake as well.
4) All content encoded via Quicktime,iTunes, or from the iTunes store work fine still.

Now, to address those that keep saying "Well, then you should just encode with Quicktime/iTunes." That would be great... if I could. Apple has not seen fit yet to allow either Quicktime or iTunes to open Xvid encoded files. I don't know about all the Mac owners on here... but the VAST majority of PC owners have video files in Xvid. Why do I use Xvid? Because it's a completely free, excellent looking, codec that has a TON of high quality free encoding apps on the PC. No offense, but I don't feel that I should have to rip all my DVD's again and then find some way to get the VOB files into a format that either Quicktime or iTunes can understand, to THEN encode them into an iPod compatible file. I HAVE the AVI's already on my hard drive, I have for a couple years. Until iTunes or Quicktime Pro (which I own) can convert all my Xvid files instead of just mpg, mov, and a couple wma's I've tried, I (and a lot of other PC users) will be using things like Videora (or various others that understand Xvid input) to convert or files for the iPod.

The screen shows the rating stars, but when you touch the wheel, the volume or track position changes. The screen is NOT displaying the correct screen. REEEAL NICE! Ugh!

Anyone else see this problem?
