The iPad with 3G will work on a boat. The iPad with 3G has a GPS chip and uses assisited GPS which is a step above GPS, both of which require a GPS chip. I've used mine in my car with no internet connection and Navigon worked well. You need to learn about AGPS... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assisted_GPS
Incorrect.
Assisted GPS does NOT mean there is not a dedicated GPS receiver.
The iPad 3G and iPhone certainly do have a dedicated GPS receiver with the assisted part speeding up the initial GPS acquisition from a cold start ONLY.
You make it sound as though "assisted GPS" is some old senile GPS with crutches!
Please do your homework before criticizing assisted GPS.

It is not triangulating via cell towers. Assisted GPS gets the actual GPS location of the cell tower from the cell tower network.
This location is then passed to the GPS receiver so it will know where it is to acquire the stallites faster.
If you are willing to spend $100 on an external workaround, it would probably be smart just to sell your wifi only ipad and pickup a 3G instead. The demand is so high for the iPads I doubt you would loose ANY money on a resale. eBay is a great start, I've done it countless times
