Problem with ATI 5770 and Mac Pro 2008, Problem with ATI 5770 and Mac Pro 2008

I am getting little green sparkles in black areas on my mac pro while using the 30inch apple display with the ATI 5770 on the dvi port no other monitors are connected to the card, my older video card does not have the issue and is running two other monitors.

It is only occasional. I removed the 5770 and only used my Geforse 8800 xt and it does not have the issue. Is it bad vram

perhaps. I got it from a friend who upgraded his mac pro 2010 to the 5870 so it could be tough to return it.

I see your running Lion. I am still on 10.6.8 because my main audio software is still in Lion beta mode.

I wonder if they have a new driver in lion that may have fixed or helped the issue.

I had all kinds of problems at once, bad ram.. four chips just started failing, one after the other, all OWC 1 gigs, now three years old. Once I removed them my boot issues that I had for a while, went away. Sometimes it would boot and somtimes it took to two tries Then or at the same time my Geforce 8800 up and died.

Everything is much more solid now I am just left with the green sparkles and I can deal with it. I may set up an external lion boot drive and see if I still have greenies, my guess it's most likely hardware related.

Thanks for your reply Jazzimus.

Hey Muzicfromcapalab, it's eay just dont comment on a discussion if you don't want the emails and or remove yourself from recieving emails from this discussion. The 5770 has been an issue not just for me but others as you can see this forum has been viewed over 1000 times. I enjoy forums and discussing about issues, the 5770 has been a major issue not because of the green pixels but because of the power suction from my MBox Pro. I am a recording engineer and producer and the card was screwing with with me for months becuase I bought it the same day I got a bunch of other gear and could not pinpoint the problem for a long time! I now have resolved and dicovered what the problem is between my interface and the 5770. And as my last post said I have given up and will live with the greenies.... so you enjoy your life and I'll enjoy mine,

in my beatiful house,

with my beautiful wife, hey....

how did I get here?😎

😁 Ha ha ha , well Lance you got here by starting this thread and you just never gave up, If your so smart and claim to be a recording engineer why were you think of putting you card in the oven ha ha ha... they must not pay very well or you would have a new computer and not be back and forth in this wonderful thread that just keeps going on and on about the same problem from the start, The 5770 is perfect in my computer which makes me think that you probably forgot to make sure your fans are working after you put that blue ray player in and now she's running a wee bit hot. !000 views you say.. that's amazing ..kinda like you tube but with less interesting things to read😁

This one is for you muzicfromwherever.... Funny 😉 how you just can't help yourself to keep reading this forum and replying even though your soooo tired of it. Seems to me like you just like to heckle people with your free time👿 and your holding your breath awaiting my next post...😮

Any way this will be my last post in this discussion as my issue is resolved!!!🙂

Apple community rejoice!!! I wont be boring you with my tedium....

Upgraded to Lion last night and the issue with the green pixels is gone, I guess it was a problem with the older Snow Leopard ATI drivers and my 30inch.

Now don't start to cry Muzic 😢 I know this is breaking your heart knowing you won't be recieving any more emails from this thread. Maybe now you can you can go enjoy that ice cream you speak of, get married, get a life, and or find some other apple forums memebers to heckle. After all life is too short to go our of your way to be a heckler.

Lance and co, I bought a 5770 from Apple's online store last August and have it running in my MacPro 1,1 connected to a 30" ACD and I too am experiencing green pixels/green snow after watching full screen HD video for a short period of time. Eventually the green pixels settle down but I was wondering if anybody found a cause or solution to this problem. I'm going to give Apple a call tomorrow since my card is still under warranty but if there is some incompatibilty between the card, DVI out and ACD then a replacement card won't solve anything.

I managed to get some good video of the problem which I was going to stick on YouTube to demonstrate the issue to others (and Apple tech support) but I've misplaced the footage at the moment..oh no just found it in iMovie..I'll cobble it together and update this thread with a link when it's online.

My green pixels have been much better of late. I have my 30 inch cinema display connected to the dvi port of the 5770. I seem to have more issues if I'm connected to the duel link minidisplay port. It may have something to do with heat as I now run my fans with smcfan control keeping it at about 82 degrees it used to be around 100, and as I have said it only happens with the 30 inch monitor. Not really sure why the greenies have not come back but a while ago I zapped my pram perhaps that helped combined with the other stuff. But unfortunatly I cannot put my finger on it.
