Ipad Safari freezes whenever entering URL in address bar

I have an iPad 1 with latest software update. Whenever I use Safari, I can go to websites if I select them from the bookmarks menu or if I use the Google search and then select the website. Whenever I try to type in a URL however, I cannot get past the first letter. For example, if I'm trying to type in "www.apple.com" all that I can type is "w." The onscreen keyboard stops responding and the key I pressed remains highlighted. I cannot switch to another field in Safari or do anything. I can switch to other apps or escape to the home screen and the iPad works just fine. Only Safari has the issue. Safari will crash after approximately 30 seconds of being frozen. Safari will still show up in the program switcher if I double tap the Home button and if I select it opens to a BLANK page, not my normal home page. If I attempt to enter a URL, same problem. What is this?

iPad, iOS 4.3.2, 64GB, 3-G, WiFi

You are aware that you can delete bookmarks off the iPad by swiping the folder/bookmark entry, correct? I just tried this and you do get a Delete button. It is not clear from your post that you can type in URLs now or not. I suspect when you get your machine back and sync, it may remove them from the laptop unless you turn off the bookmarks sync.

I may have a solution!

I had the same issue on my iPad 2. I gave up using Safari and only used Atomic Browser as my browser. I now have the new iPad (3rd gen) and now the problem is on my new iPad. I made a genius bar appointment and they had me reset my iPad as a new be and not to restore the backup from my iPad 2. This seemed to work for about a day and then the problem reappeared.

I then noticed that when I went to my bookmarks in Safari I had thousands upon thousands of bookmarks for Instapaper. I would scroll up as fast as I could and it would be an endless list of bookmarks!

I then went to Settings, then iCloud and noticed that I had virtually everything turned on, including bookmarks. I turned bookmarks off in iCloud and it asked if I wanted to delete the bookmarks off the iPad or keep them. I selected to delete them. And voila! Safari started working properly, meaning I can now enter URLs in the address bar.

Just as a test I turned the bookmarks back on in iCloud and the problem reappeared. I turned it back off and it fixed the problem once again. It been about a week and my Safari is still working properly.

Hope this helps....

I cannot thank you enough. My safari has been crashing for a while now and it's been so frustrating not knowing how to fix it. I have search and search and tried all sugestions to no avail. That is until I finally got to your post and your saying to go to icloud and turn bookmarks off and that is would delete them all from Safari..WONDERFUL!! That did it! It is finally back to normal. You have made me very happy! Thank YOU!!!
