How to retrieve old nickname in Game center?

How did this help you keep your old game center nickname?

It's indeed frustrating to see that because of some flicks in a system so many people have problems. I believe Apple should find a solution to this.

I'm convinced they have a database in which they store the Nicknames and email addresses, how else can they send an email if you want to retrieve your info.

I was on level 34 with my Smurfs so I have to work many month to get to this level again if I can't get my old data back!!!

Have you tried your iTunes login instead of your @me.com apple ID? This worked for me...

The bottom line for us was we had two GC accounts and did not know it - the account with our nickname is the right one, but we had been switched back to an old account with the same name as our Apple ID. Similar to what others have said we thought there was a glitch in game center that was welcoming us to a GC account that was not ours and had no progress on the games. After reading through the above posts, instead of entering our apple id we tried our game center nickname as the login. Of course at first we tried using the password to our apple id which failed. We started thinking of other possible passwords we might have used. We remember one and tried it - success. What had happened was that we created a GC account using our apple id and password when we initially setup the ipod. Then later as we started getting gaming apps we created a second GC account using the nickname and a different password - that GC account got all the gaming activity and progress tied to it. I guess it is a little misleading for the account field when logging in to GC to say 'enter Apple ID'. Hopefully this helps at least some of you get your correct GC account back.

After an upgrade to iOS 5 the old gamecentre nickname/password did not work, however, THIS DID WORK:

1) Login to GameCentre with your appleID and password. If you previously had a nickname, then you will see none of your progress.

2) Tap on the "Me" tab. Go down to you applie ID banner at the bottom and click it. Select logout.

3) Restart GameCentre.

4) Login this time with your nickname and password.

You are a lifesaver! My 8 yr old had a meltdown because we couldn't log back in and my apple ID and my husbands didn't work. It's the "apple id" signin that throws you off. Using the nickname was the key for the userid NOT the apple id.

I tried that and many other combinations - didn't work. And please stop spamming the discussion with multiple identical posts.

I am having the same problem. Help. I couldn't remember my password to Game Center, but I know my nickname, they had ask me to sign in with my Apple ID, which I did. Then it said that there was No account with this Apple ID. Later it asked me to create a new account. Of course I didn't, or else I would loose my purchases or scores made in my games. This is frustrating.

First, let me tell you that the wording is *extremely* confusing, to say the least when Game Center requires us to relogging. Something I'm not sure why because unlike many people here, I did not upgrade from IOS5. I am playing on an iPad 3, my first Apple product in about 25 years!

Game Center is NOT asking you for your Apple ID even though that is what is stated. I am copying below part of pdubber's instructions with some additional information.

*** Sign in with your precious nickname. NOT your Apple ID. ***

That's where they're asking for your APPLE ID... Don't ask, who knows why!

*** Enter a password you may have used. ** BEWARE ** NOT NECESSARILY YOUR APPLE ID!!

I kept being rejected because I was trying to log in with my Apple ID & its related password. After stumbling on pdubber's post I tried what I listed above with a throwaway password I like to use. Game Center demands a capital letter which I only use with my throwaway password when required. That's another reason why I could not get in.

The only thing is that I beat all kind of records while logged in as Anonymous :-/

this is all caused by "forgetting" your acctual nickname... so to solve, think of your NICKNAME that you really used when u made the gamecenter account.

then go back and sign in, which it should know as for "new nickname" BUT rather than making a NEW one, enter your real and REMEMBERED one, type it in and then done, it will then let you in, however if it says "in use" then try with a cap letter, if it still says it, then its not ur nickname, so think harder untill u remember, this is the way it is, i did the same, but then i was going to make a new one in the end, but my NEW nickname, happend to be the one i really used when i made it ^.^. and so question:

how does it not let you have OTHER peoples nickname and says its in use, but can alow you to have yours back ? = simple, basicly its because your EMAIL nd GAMECENTER nick name, are in a JOINT database, meaning it will let you have yours back because its in your data field, which won't let you have someone elses because it detects your not using their email to login, so says "in use".....

I am afraid, my good friend, that it was not because I forgot my nick. It's important for mr to state this because there may be more than one reason for the issue and yours is just as valid.

Because I thought I didn't know my nick, I wasted a lot of time trying nicks I *knew* I had never used.

My issue and it's solution is clearly stated above: the system asked for an email whe what it wanted was a nick.

If I could upload a pick I would show it but a) don't want to look for a tutorial right now and b) honestly, since the issue is fixed I don't know if I could reproduce it.

Same problem updating my iPad. Usually when I log into Game Center, I log in with my email and password. After updating it said my user id was already taken, I tried logging in with my email address and my user id. I made the mistake of creating a new one 😟

I called support, got the same response as others, my original user id is gone for good, I will not be able to recover it. My original user id is still showing up on the leader boards, I tried to send myself a friend request, but nothing came to my email. So I am assuming that once I created a new user id associated to the only email address I have ever used for my iPad, the original user id was dropped from being attached to it.

None of my scores showed up in the Game Center console after updating either, but some of my scores showed up after I played the game again, but some did not and I have to start over.

I too am having trouble after we accepted the new terms of service. I have tried all the above suggestions and still nothing. My problem is that I have 1 apple id (mine) and my two children both just had Game Center Ids. I know both of their GC ids and passwords, but I get the error message that the apple id is not correct and the password is incorrect. HELP! My children have spent their own money on many of these games, how am I able to save their achievements?!?!

I am able to get into my account just fine with my apple id.

I am having the same problem. I actually had the same problem before, and what I did to fix it was to go to iTunes, and restore my iPad to a time in which my game center was working.
