Diagnostic Mode, My iPod Classic doesn't have a FW Jack

Hi,

I'm experiancing a problem with my iPod Classic 6th Generation. I beleive (due to some research) that it may have some bad sectors because it repetitavely crashes iTunes during sync on random songs. I tried doing it in small chunks but it didn't seem to make a difference.

I tried Diagnostic Mode and I have gotten to the point where it's at the Accessorize Test. It says on the screen;

LCD=2

FW_DETECT=0

USB_DETECT=1

Please plug FW

I beleive FW means Fire Wire but I have no signs of a Fire Wire jack. I've tried everything and I'm stuck on this part.

Any help appreciated, I just don't want to know if you're having the same experiances as me 🙂

Thanks,

Zach

I have a similar problem with my IPod 6gen 80gb. I bought it second hand and it worked fine for a year, but today I dropped it. It wasn't high or anything but after that it turned really slow. It still plays most songs, with others it loads for a while and then skips. If i connect it to my PC it will show the ipod in my computer, but I can't do anything with it. And PC goes really slow. Itunes won't recognize it, floola won't, I can't open the Ipod from my computer or even right click the icon. Also the Ipod now shows i have only 200MB of free space, but I had like 40 GB before and everytime I disconnect from the PC the Ipod restarts and goes to original settings.

On top of all that the hardrive started making a lot more noise, similar to normal but repeatedly and sometimes a high pitch buzz.

A lot of details, but I just wanna be precise.

I did the diagnosis:

Retracts: 9

Reallocs: 72

Pending Sectors: 72

PowerOn Hours: 225

Start/Stops: 12783

Temp Current: 27

Temp Min: 5

Temp Max: 54

I've got a bad feeling about this....

I can't say for certain, but your symptoms would suggest that sometimes it is taking the iPod a few goes to read the next chunk of data. It is not so bad that it can't read the data at all which is why your stats don't look that bad, but they don't always read at the first attempt causing the delay. If the drive is highly fragmented that can also intoduce delays into the reading process.

Ok, suspected faulty HD? Could it be a logic board causing the issue? See below.

Ok so initially i was having a problem with my ipod and lack of sound in one earphone. Checked different earphones and still same problem.

Bought a new back plate with audio jack and battery in etc and installed. But in doing so broke the connector attaching it to the logic board. worked ok for a week but eventually failed. Suspected due to logic board so bought a new one and installed.

after new logic board installed everything was working fine, sound in both ears, but ipod was operating abit slower than usual and would randomly freeze during songs and then continue playing again.

Im assuming its the logic board rather than the hard drive as the hard drive was working fine before new logic board was installed.

Thanks for your advice

the HDD scan - says PASS 19gb

when i try to format/erase the disk using my mac - it say either teh disk is not mountable in FAT 32 format, or no STAT disk in mac os extended format.
