Diagnostic Mode, My iPod Classic doesn't have a FW Jack

Hi,

I'm experiancing a problem with my iPod Classic 6th Generation. I beleive (due to some research) that it may have some bad sectors because it repetitavely crashes iTunes during sync on random songs. I tried doing it in small chunks but it didn't seem to make a difference.

I tried Diagnostic Mode and I have gotten to the point where it's at the Accessorize Test. It says on the screen;

LCD=2

FW_DETECT=0

USB_DETECT=1

Please plug FW

I beleive FW means Fire Wire but I have no signs of a Fire Wire jack. I've tried everything and I'm stuck on this part.

Any help appreciated, I just don't want to know if you're having the same experiances as me 🙂

Thanks,

Zach

Apple Support call just referred me to your thread because my iPod 160GB many years old, which I use as a hard disk via USB keeps dropping the connection to the computer. I have used a MacBook Pro late2008 with OSX10.7 or 10.9.5 and a new iMAc with 10.9.5, two different USB cables etc. Same problem. Drops maybe once an hour. Doesn't relate to computer sleep. Symptom is that the .docx I am working is not saved unless I 'Save As' and give it a new name and location. Otherwise 'Save' just does nothing, as the iPod mount icon is no longer visible on the Desktop. I have Reset and Restored the iPod - no change.

Readings on the HD SMART test:

Retracts 229

Realloc 1280

Pending 0

Power hours 15535

Start/Stop 7872

T current 35C

T min 7C

T max 53c

From the thread it seems the HD may be doing an OK job at reallocation. Any suggestions on why it drops connection and what to test next?

I'm afraid I don't know any details of the behaviour of the firmware on the iPod as regards sleeping, but it may be that it has an independent sleep mode timer separate from anything operated by the OS. You could try activating the select button say every 30 minutes as a test to it that will keep the device "alive" for longer than an hour.

Personally I would not recommend using your iPod classic as the primary working or storage location. Edit your documents on local storage and backup to at least one secondary location like your iPod or a memory stick.
