Cannot get full screen from HDMI output

I have just purchased an IPAD 2 and have connected it via the Apple Digital AV adapter to my Flat Screen TV which has three HDMI inputs. I cannot get either static or moving images to fill the screen not matter what settings I try on the IPAD (only setting I can find is widescreen which is on) and on my TV (which gives the biggest IPAD picture when set to 'full screen' or 'auto').

So if the IPAD 2 is supposed to be able to output full 1080 pixels and I know my TV's HDMI inputs accept 1080 pixel signals then what's going wrong?

OK. In that case, I expect that the issue is with the settings on the television. These settings have drove me crazy because there is rare agreement among the vendors regarding nomenclature and, worse, some of the nomenclature simply makes no sense.

I've been reduced to trying every available setting until I find something that works. You've got to be careful that you don't go too far and lose a portion of the image and also that you're not getting distortion (I really hate those settings that stretch the image to eliminate the bars on the sides).
