Frequent Panic NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100

I've sent my MBP i7 mid-2010 for repair with the following frequent and intermittent kernel panic to no avail: panic(cpu 2 caller 0x9cdc8f): NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100: ... to no avail.

I happen to have subscribed to AppleCare for this machine but this did not make any difference. The approved repair center I dealt with just reformatted the HD per Apple's support instructions (twice !) and were unable to reproduce the panic. I called the Apple support folks in Ireland directly with the incident # and got told that there was basically nothing wrong with my machine and that this was bound to be caused by non-Apple software (mind you, the support guy I talked to didn't even know that XCode was an Apple product - sic). I however believe this is very likely due to a faulty NVidia video card on the logic board.

Has this happened to someone else? How did you get resolution? Right now I am stuck with an unreliable machine and seem unable to get it fixed. Any help would be VERY appreciated.

Thank you,

François

to keep you in the loop: after beeing able to show it to my local reseller they had it sent to their technician and I got a call today. They are replacing the logic board. Apple will not pay for it (16 months old MacBook Pro Mid 2010 i7). Luckily I got an extended warranty from my reseller - let's see if they find a working logic board.

Aug 29, 2011 10:41 PM in response to ReL1K

Agreed - I did everything Apple Care told me to do on the phone. After 5 days of phone support I aggreed to bring it to Apple.

They are replacing my logicboard for free.

I am out of waranty by almost three months by the way. They are still fixing it for free though - Yah Apple - so they should.

I first reported a similar problem after doing one of the Snow Leopard upgrades. I took it to Apple back then while it was still in warranty but they 'couldn't find anything wrong'. I ended up finding on the internet a fix by switching off automatic graphics swithching. Any way it was mostly fine from then on until my upgrade to Lion.

Boom - problem back again with avengance. Frequent black screens. Occuring at all differnet times and during different task - intensive or not, hot or cold. There was no picking it. Mainly during using Final Cut Pro though!

I reported it Apple by phone and went through the motions as stated at the begining of this thread.

If this has started happening to you after you Lion upgrade and your computer is now out of warranty. You still have three months phone support from the time of your Lion purchase. Use it, report it to Apple. Stay polite with Apple and maybe suggest to them this appears be a hardware issue by all accounts of what you 'have read on the internet'.

I hope you have as much success as getting Apple to take ownership.

Aug 31, 2011 1:24 PM in response to francois-vda

A solution that worked for me. I make no guarantees that doing what I did will fix your problem I'm just reporting what worked for me.

I've had the same problem with my MBP, the screen would just go black and the system would be unresponsive. Following a restart I'd be presented with the panic/NVRM error message like the one posted by francois-vda. This would usually but not exclusively happen when watching videos or doing other GPU intensive tasks. Based on posts in this thread I expected that the logic board was damaged, however when ran the Apple Service Diagnostic reported no hardware problems.

I checked the temps and fan speeds while doing some benchmarks/stress testing and although they were on the high side they did not exceed the allowed maximums. Having previous experience with Apple computers and heat issues I had a strong suspicion of what the problem might be but could not confirm it without opening the computer and taking out the logic board. After disassembly and removal of the heat sink my suspicions were confirmed the heat sink paste/grease/compound has been improperly applied to the heat sink and the CPU/GPU underneath, an absolutely insane amount of paste has been used completely encasing both cores in a dried up mess.

I cleaned up the old heat sink paste and applied a thin layer of a new compound to the top of the CPU and the GPU. I've been using the computer for the past 4 days(including about 12 hours of continues stress testing) and the panic/nvrm problem has not reoccurred.

Sep 2, 2011 4:01 AM in response to MBookProUser

I found another working solution (until lion): I got a usb-to-dvi graphiccard-adapter from DisplayLink (it work OK on the external display, Samsung syncmaster T260, not as fast and cristalsharp as the NVIDIA but its OK) and with gfxCardstatus I force the Mac to use integrated only. Not a crash in two days so I thought Lion.......boom, boom, boom, 8 panics before I even got to the loginscreen. It seems that the Mac use NVIDIA during bootsequence and gfxCardstatus kicks in after you login, but then it's been stable for some hours.

Here are some useful links for the MBookProUser-fix:

and

I'll try that now!

Sep 2, 2011 6:02 AM in response to francois-vda

So back again, they change the logic board twice.
the first one got an bad Nvidia Chip, the second one was also crapy and brocken out of the box, now i got a working on installed and for now it works fine...
They told me that it is a heat - bad Chip - bad logic bord problem ...

So let´s wait until the next VJ Show ... Hope the new chip can stand it ...

Sep 6, 2011 7:21 AM in response to francois-vda

Been battling with this problem for more then 5 weeks now. Logic board has been replaced by Apple twice, problem resurfaces within about 2hrs of use. Tested with known working memory and OS, no external hardware... just about everything that myself and the techs at the Apple store can think of. The guys i've been dealing with clearly havent seen this problem before and are as stumped as I am when it comes to putting a finger on the exact cause. Taking it back to Apple tomorrow after speaking to the store manager - I'm hoping they have some process they can pursue for escalating problems like this, getting these kernal panic reports in front of sombody who has the knowlage/resorces to interpret them beyond what is obvious would be a start.

Sep 6, 2011 7:44 AM in response to gustav.mogensen

I replaced the heat sink paste (it was an adequate amount, se http://www.anst.uu.se/gustmoge/mbp-logic.jpg), but with no luck, still crashes in boot-sequence(lion). So I'm back on 10.6.8 now and will stay there until this hardware issue is fixed.

IMHO I think that apple made a major design fault, there are large air outlets but incoming air inlet is very small is placed next to the outlet. OK the air expands somewhat when the temperature rises but that much? And the warm air goes back into the mashine. You should drill some holes in the front (or right under the fans) of the unibody!

It would be nice to have a comment from apple-tech or ndivia!

Sep 7, 2011 12:25 AM in response to gustav.mogensen

Woah - it's been years since I mounted a CPU heatsink, but that looks like way too much thermal paste. As I understood it, that can be a very bad thing - potentially interfering with the heatsink's ability to properly conduct heat.

Admittedly, I'm unfamiliar with actual physics involved and the actual type of thermal compound used here - anyone with more knowledge in this area, please correct me if I'm mistaken.

Gustav - If you're willing to disassemble the unit once more, you might consider removing the excess.

Oh and thanks for posting the pic - I've been having similar issues & was curious to see what might be the cause.

Sep 7, 2011 1:15 AM in response to francois-vda

@gustav.mogensen That is not an adequate amount, that's way too much thermal paste.

Update: I'm sad to report that I experienced another crash, a first one since re-applying the paste around 10 days ago. In conclusion it seams that removing and re-applying the thermal paste has "helped" the situation as the crashes aren't as frequent but it has not fixed it.

It would be nice to see someone from Apple respond to this thread and let us know if this issue is at least being investigated.

Sep 8, 2011 5:51 AM in response to francois-vda

This has been happening to me for like a week now, and has only gotten worse as days go by. Right now i was trying to have a skype conversation, it would work for the first 3-4 min then, black screen. This happened 3 or 4 times till i decided to just keep talking on my iPhone. But its not only skype, it can be anything.

I just got my motherboard replaced after NVRMing all over the place with 10.6.8 and 10.7.*. I demonstrated the error at Genius Bar by going to the second pane of effects in photobooth on a fresh 10.7.0 install. This is a very consistent way to trigger the panic.

I have to give it to Apple, though, at a busy Vancouver downtown store the board was replaced in less than 3 hours.

I'm hoping that the replacement will address the issue. I'll keep people posted.

Guys,

let's sum things up until now ...

MBP - apparently only the Mid 2010 ones (due to the GeForce nVidia 330 gfx card) - crashes from every other day to multiple times a day: Sudden "black out", hard reset will turn up a Kernel Panic "NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error".

Most likely cause: Defect 330GT graphics card & software driver issue that brings the problem out.

Software Fix: Downgrade to 10.6.3, or use your MBP in Intel gfx only mode (using gfxCardStatus). Apparently, this isn't a real fix, just a workaround.

Real fix: Get your logic board exchanged! This has proven to be the only REAL solution to the problem. Everyone facing the above mentioned problem got it solved by a logic board exchange.

Thoughts: The problem could be caused by huge chunks of thermal paste cloistered all over the graphics cards, kind of hindering the heat sinks from doing their work properly. GFX card overheat is a known issue with the nVidia 330 cards. Some people actually took their fresh logic boards, removing the paste applied by Apple, then applying their own paste properly. Quite obviously, this isn't something you could wholeheartedly recommend, since it'll most likely void your warranty.

Now, the thing that keeps me worried: Will my new logic board work fine from now on, or will I have to face the same Kernel Panics again in a couple of weeks or months? Let's wait and see what others report who've had their boards exchanged ...

Frequent Panic NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100
