Frequent Panic NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100

I've sent my MBP i7 mid-2010 for repair with the following frequent and intermittent kernel panic to no avail: panic(cpu 2 caller 0x9cdc8f): NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100: ... to no avail.

I happen to have subscribed to AppleCare for this machine but this did not make any difference. The approved repair center I dealt with just reformatted the HD per Apple's support instructions (twice !) and were unable to reproduce the panic. I called the Apple support folks in Ireland directly with the incident # and got told that there was basically nothing wrong with my machine and that this was bound to be caused by non-Apple software (mind you, the support guy I talked to didn't even know that XCode was an Apple product - sic). I however believe this is very likely due to a faulty NVidia video card on the logic board.

Has this happened to someone else? How did you get resolution? Right now I am stuck with an unreliable machine and seem unable to get it fixed. Any help would be VERY appreciated.

Thank you,

François

Hi guys, I have a:

Model Name: MacBook Pro

Model Identifier: MacBookPro6,2

Processor Name: Intel Core i5

Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz

Number Of Processors: 1

Total Number Of Cores: 2

L2 Cache (per core): 256 KB

L3 Cache: 3 MB

Memory: 4 GB

NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M:

Chipset Model: NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M

Type: GPU

Bus: PCIe

PCIe Lane Width: x16

VRAM (Total): 256 MB

and NVRM panic (with black display and my macbook frozen) problem started as soon as I've upgraded to OSX Lion. At the begining it was occuring only when I was launching App Store or using 'space key' in finder for previewing images, movies. Later it started occuring also randomly. So I've defenitely decided to downgrade to Snow Leopard.

So I've installed 10.6.3, updated to 10.6.8, and currently running my OSX with no more black screens.

(repeated all case scenarios I've got into the panic problem when using OSX Lion).

Conclusion:

1. it is a software bug;

2. this is indeed a hardware problem, surfacing just because OSX Lion is stressing much more the GPU ( although I doubt it, because I was having the same problem when booting it cold )

Sep 12, 2011 9:21 AM in response to francois-vda

I would like to urge all that have this problem AND have not already posted to this thread to please post if you have this same "NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error" problem. If your issue is not the NVRM panic, don't post on this thread. I took my laptop into the Apple Store yesterday and they don't have anything in their records related to this as a known problem. I know some have posted that this is a known problem by Apple and the fix is replacing the logic board. However, my store hasn't found this in their record so it sounds like we need to push this issue. I can't imagine these are one-off problem that people are reporting in this thread so we need to press Apple to find the solution. If it is hardware, activate a recall to replace whatever manufacturer defected component is at blame. If it's a driver issue, fix the software. Please post so we can raise the awareness of the problem.

Sep 12, 2011 9:56 AM in response to captkdawg

@captkdawg: Apple refuses to acknowledge the obvious problem here - your obeservation is absolutely correct. But speaking to the Geniuses or tech guys reveals EVERY store has had to deal with this exact problem multiple times so far. So why won't they acknowledge it? Easy: They would have to come up with a solution. And, with the full exchange of the logic board being the only solution at hand, they would have massive costs facing them. Plus, going public with this problem would mean many more users who thought the problem must be their software set-up or whatever would demand a logic board change they would have never wanted without the info ...

I may be mistaken. But then again, has anyone of the dozens of people posting here with the exact same problems, received any other info from Apple so far? Nope. Was the Online mag researching this issue given an official comment or statement? Nope - Apple didn't want to comment.

Sep 12, 2011 10:00 AM in response to mishake

@mishake: You should have cloned your HD, and started another MBP with the same specs with the clone. I'm almost certain it wouldn't have crashed since it's definitely a hardware problem that needs a certain software config to surface, that much is true. But it's the hardware, anyway - proof: All of us who got a new logic board discovered the magic ... poof, problem was gone. Try to get a new lb if possible ...

@Ketsueki : You sure? How much do they charge? I got I repaired under warranty, but my receipt stated it would have cost around $600 otherwise ... that's less than 50% of a new MBP.

I think we need to be balanced here. While there are people with this problem, which is reproducible and clearly due to a hardware issue (replacing the logic board worked for me), the relative number of people with this problem is very small. The likely reason why this problem has not been circulated as some kind of service bulletin is because too few people are affected for it to be considered systemic.

Now I know, all of us with this problem want as many people to have it as possible so that the diagnosis problem can be streamlined. Fortunately, this is not required. You simply need to reproduce the error (on a clean Lion install, the second pane of the photobooth effect screen crashes the machine reproducibly), and Apple *will* replace the logic board for you.

On 10.6.7 Powerpoint 2011 would crash my system when I was scrolling through the slide explorer view for a presentation with 300+ slides. Quite consistently. So while other ways to crash the system (photobooth) that consistently triggered the fault on 10.7.* didn't do so on 10.6.7, there *is* at least one thing for me that worked for that OS version.

Sep 12, 2011 10:37 PM in response to Martin Krzywinski

Hey Martin,

I wholeheartedly agree with your post except for the very last sentence:

"You simply need to reproduce the error (on a clean Lion install, the second pane of the photobooth effect screen crashes the machine reproducibly), and Apple *will* replace the logic board for you."

This may have been your personal experience, but it's not the one made of the people on the forums made, nor is it Apple standard procedure. Standard procedure is: Run the Apple stress test for a couple of hours (which includes diagnostics of the graphic card as well), if it doesn't show up an error, the hardware is just fine.

In my case, they first wanted to bill me the exchange of the logic board because I insisted on it even though their diagnostics didn't show up any errors. Then they completely erased my hard disk - just to make sure it's not really a software bug caused by some software I installed ... Well, I had backups - but reinstalling everything, especially with bootcamp running, is a true waste of time.

Plus: I showed them the way to reproduce the error with Photobooth (BTW: It only worked 50-60% of the time to cause the crash that way ...). What they typed into my Genius bar receipt was: "

Steps to Reproduce: running Photo Booth with effects seems to force the issue to appear". Running Photo Booth with effects? If I was a tech, I wouldn't know that switching the effect pages was meant by that. And I was lucky the guy checking in my MBP even typed that much in - he said it didn't matter (... here comes the standard testing procedure again).

OK - so a lot of hassle, a lot of arguing to do with the Geniuses (in my case I was just lucky one of the guys knew of the problem and knew I would have a huge problem if he didn't because it's not an 'official' error) ... plus the fact, that many people DON'T go into these forums and will be told by Genius bar / other retailers the hardware is just fine after hardware diagnostics and it must be their software. So this is why Apple really needs to acknowledge the obvious hardware fault here instead of ignoring it.

Martin, you wrote: "The likely reason why this problem has not been circulated as some kind of service bulletin is because too few people are affected for it to be considered systemic." I think this might be very well true. But on the other hand, it's Apple who advertises with having "the better service". They should live up to it and deal with individual problems (if they really are) individually...

Sep 13, 2011 1:48 AM in response to ollimuc

Downgrade to 10.6.3 (clean) doesn't help!

When you guys try to reproduce the panic, remember that the MBP has automatic graphic switching. It will NOT crash running on the integrated graphic. There are three ways to force it to run the nvidia (discrete) graphic: Connect an external display or install gfxCardStatus or turn off automatic switching in the "Energy Saver - preference pane".

Be shure to tell the apple tech guys to connect an external display when running hardware test (if it's possible)!

Sep 13, 2011 5:21 AM in response to francois-vda

Hi all - I definitely have the exact same problem, so just posting to be 'counted' so maybe Apple will take this problem seriously. I am sending them every crash report with messages telling them to please sort it. Haven't tried to get any support from Apple on it yet otherwise. May try changing the graphics card setting as suggested in some of the posts. No time for reinstalls etc. - this is my main work machine. Very annoying and never had such an unstable Mac and I've been on Macs since PowerBook 140s. The post just shows how swift and useful a user-community is in creating clarity. There must be some tech TV shows or magazine happy to report it, that may help get attention.

I have had my MBP back for several weeks now since Apple replaced the Logic Board.

As expected - everything is working as it should again and the BSOD has not reapeared yet - 'touch wood'.

My advise is as others have suggested already - you should show Apple the problem by replicating the error. Stay polite with Apple.

If you are out of warranty like I was, Apple "will" replace the logic Board. BUT - Only if you do all you can to show Apple the error is happening on a clean install of lion and is therefore not related to any other software incompatability.

The computer will only be a maximum of 6 or so months out of warranty. Therfore Apple won't let you walk away from the store with out helping you if you have showed them this problem is occuring on a clean Lion install on a machine that is roughly just 18 months old with NOTHING else on it but Apple software.

Apple do care - but this is not a huge 'recall' issue for them in the grand scheme of things. There are thousands and thousands of these machines out there, and we are less than 200 who have this problem. We are probably less than 1 percent of all machine owners.

Thats why you need to show Apple this occurs after installing Apple's latest operating system upgrade on an otherwise clean MBP. Forget about the fact that you are out of warranty. It doesn't matter! If it is Apple's operating system upgrade that renders your MBP useless - Apple will fix that. Tell Apple this only started with Lion or started to occure ALL THE TIME after Lion upgrade.

Back up your machine now - Do a clean lion install - Replicate the problem using trusted methods such as photobooth effects page 2 - Get on the phone ang get your MBP booked in with Apple for service. Do it while you still have warranty with your Lion purchase.

I have the same problem. MBP October 2010, i7, 2.66, Snow Leopard, 10.6.8, Nvidia graphics:

Versions-ID: 0x00a2

ROM-Version: 3560

gMux-Version: 1.9.21

Kernel panic:

panic(cpu 2 caller 0x5c0c3c97): NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100: CFG 0xffffffff 0xffffffff 0xffffffff, BAR0 0xc0000000 0x7f993000 0x0a5480a2, D0, P0/4

Searching forums for the problem eventually lead me here. Thanks for all your ideas and for sharing.

Naturally i've the same problem.

MacBookPro6,2

15'' mid 2010 2.66 Ghz i7 8 Gb ram 1067Mhz DDR3

Lion 10.7.1

NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M - Intel HD Graphics

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For resolve (BUT IS NOT THIS SOLUTION AND IS NOT JUST WHEN I SPENT 2500 EURO .... SH..T!!!!) frequent crash i've installed gfxCardStatus and i've set integrated INTEL graphic card.

I've noticed that if i set Nvidia graphic card crash and crash again if i set dinamic mode that switch nvidia or intel graphic card.

Bored from this situation i've installed ubuntu 11.04 in dual boot.

In ubuntu i've stressed the graphic card nvidia and I have not never had problems. Never crash. Never Kernel panic. NEVER!!!!

This demonstrates that the problems IS NOT the logic board BUT THE PROBLEM IS THE OPERATING SYSTEM!!!!!!!!!!!

That's all.... but is not possible that i can't make a prasantation because I am afraid that the system go in kernel panic in means of a convention from 1000000 euros...

Is not possible that i spent a lot of money and i must use another operating system!!!
