Frequent Panic NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100

I've sent my MBP i7 mid-2010 for repair with the following frequent and intermittent kernel panic to no avail: panic(cpu 2 caller 0x9cdc8f): NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100: ... to no avail.

I happen to have subscribed to AppleCare for this machine but this did not make any difference. The approved repair center I dealt with just reformatted the HD per Apple's support instructions (twice !) and were unable to reproduce the panic. I called the Apple support folks in Ireland directly with the incident # and got told that there was basically nothing wrong with my machine and that this was bound to be caused by non-Apple software (mind you, the support guy I talked to didn't even know that XCode was an Apple product - sic). I however believe this is very likely due to a faulty NVidia video card on the logic board.

Has this happened to someone else? How did you get resolution? Right now I am stuck with an unreliable machine and seem unable to get it fixed. Any help would be VERY appreciated.

Thank you,

François

Alright. I have kept silent for long enough.

I have an early 2010 (April to be exact) 15" i7 MBP. Also have BootCamp set up with Windows 7 Ultimate.

Crash occurs while on Snow Leopard - 10.6.8. Especially when using an external monitor with the LCD shut down.

I have been able to consistently recreate the problem when starting Wesnoth on the external monitor as well as Sid Meier's Pirates!

Used gfxCardStatus and forced it to stay on Intel Integrated, and both games run fine. However without the use of my external monitor. I have read all the posts in this thread and I am still on the fence about calling it as a hardware issue. Because:

While booted into Windows (and I am sure Windows only uses the Nvidia GPU) and even when playing SC or Batman Arkham Asylum, THERE IS NO PROBLEM. No matter the heat on the machine, it simply won't crash. I ran both games on the external monitor and still NO CRASH.

So is this still a hardware issue? Maybe it is, given the fact that the people who have had their logic boards replaced have not reported a re-occurrence of the problem.

Oct 8, 2011 8:12 AM in response to francois-vda

Count me in on this too. I am also experiencing the exact same crashes described here, black screen, last sound in a loop. My crashlogs look identical. I get it occasionally, not as often as some people have described. My last one today was even when i just moved the mouse to the bottom of the screen to access the dock!

I have read the entire thread and want to point out some things that i think are important:

My Macbook Pro is an i5, not i7, as some have hinted that the i7 more intense heat might be the source of the problem.

I am on OSX 10.6.4.

And regarding bobsterbobs last post:

Sorry to dissapoint you, but i definately get the same kind of crash in WindowsXP while playing Drakensang. Exact same symptons that is. And it didnt matter whether i had an external monitor attached or not.

So i really think its hardware related.

Oct 10, 2011 12:40 PM in response to bobsterbobs

I just recently inherited a 15" MBP i5 8GB RAM high-res anti-glare screen and it exhibits this problem about once per day. I can be doing anything and the display will just go black. The keyboard is illuminated, but the keys to change the keyboard illumination brightness have no effect. SSH to the machine is blocked when this happens, so I can't login remotely to the machine to view processes or review logs. The system log hasn't shown any signs of a problem, but I may need to review more logs.

The system will have plenty of charge, often it is plugged in to power, the system was being used and should not have gone into sleep. I have tried to close the lid and reopen it and that has had no effect either. Since I immediately upgraded to Lion, I'm not sure if this problem occurred prior to the upgrade on this machine. The previous owner says it never happened before. However, a colleague has the exact same machine and it has had this problem for a long time, even under Snow Leopard.

I have run a hardware test and it came out clean, even under the longer test. I suspect this is hardware. Even using the gfxCardStatus app, as some suggested, didn't resolve my problem. With the integrated Intel GPU I experienced numerous crashes, which is not what others experienced. But the crashes with the integrated card were different: pixelated display, ticking audio, unresponsive cursor, etc. Most others in this thread seem to have had no problems with the Intel card. The NVIDIA card worked for a longer period of time, but I still experienced the problem with the display going black. Seems to me that it is the logic board, video controller or the cards. I suspect a controller, but I can't be sure.

I have only swapped boards under warranty and I have had about a 50% success rate. Apple said not to swap boards for this problem because it will not fix it. I would imagine that it is a software issue that is worse on some hardware than others.

If you want to pay to swap your board it would cost $350.00 flat rate at the Apple Store.

I have talked to tech support numerous times about this issue and they insist that a fix is in the works from engineering and not to do any hardware repair.

I think the biggest issue here is Apple not communicating the problem to customers. Apple merely updating people as to what was going on would go a long way.

Oct 12, 2011 5:35 AM in response to jeeper71

It is very frustrating. In my case, I never know when it is going to occur. I recently reset the PRAM, which so far has helped remedy my problem. I went through seven chimes and not the recommended two (or maybe it was three) that Apple suggests in their support documentation. Not sure if it is entirely fixed, but this is the longest I have gone without a crash.

Oct 12, 2011 8:51 AM in response to themachelper

Hmm... very interesting and thank you for that. I sort of have a sure-fire way of crashing my machine on an application launch. I will reset the PRAM later today and report here if my machine did or didn't crash based on the test I mentioned.

Question: I understand resetting the PRAM but I don't understand what you mean by the word "chimes". Could you please explain? Thanks again.

Oct 12, 2011 10:04 AM in response to francois-vda

I had the same issue and for it me started after upgrading the RAM. Seems the serial number according to Apple's service site supported the faster RAM 1333 yet when I added the RAM I had nothing but problems. Ended up going to 1066 chips and the machine is back to 100% perfect performance. I think a firmware update at some point caused the issue of not recognizing the faster 1333 RAM.

Oct 12, 2011 7:54 PM in response to Ferdmeister

I have the same issues.. MPB 2010 (6,2) i5. First started occuring for me when I upgraded to Lion (10.7.X), there was usually a 50/50 chance of my Mac panicing after waking from sleep.. really furstrating!

Downgrading to Snow Leopard (10.6.8) has made the issue re-occur less (down to once a week or so) but it still happens.

Has anyone tried 10.7.2 yet? There doesn't appear to be any graphics updates listed in the release notes.. 😟
