Frequent Panic NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100

I've sent my MBP i7 mid-2010 for repair with the following frequent and intermittent kernel panic to no avail: panic(cpu 2 caller 0x9cdc8f): NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100: ... to no avail.

I happen to have subscribed to AppleCare for this machine but this did not make any difference. The approved repair center I dealt with just reformatted the HD per Apple's support instructions (twice !) and were unable to reproduce the panic. I called the Apple support folks in Ireland directly with the incident # and got told that there was basically nothing wrong with my machine and that this was bound to be caused by non-Apple software (mind you, the support guy I talked to didn't even know that XCode was an Apple product - sic). I however believe this is very likely due to a faulty NVidia video card on the logic board.

Has this happened to someone else? How did you get resolution? Right now I am stuck with an unreliable machine and seem unable to get it fixed. Any help would be VERY appreciated.

Thank you,

François

Ok i found a ripetible problem.

In my case the system go in kernel panic with black screen when i open firefox 7.01 (version flash 10,1,102,64 installed) and go in this page: http://www.bancopostaclick.it

When the page charge the flash plugin PUFF ... black screen. I repeat this for 4 time and always crash.

I think that the problem are inside the flash with the driver NVIDIA.

OS 10.6.8 Macbook Pro 8Gb Ram 2.66 Intel Core i7

You can try this?

Bye Andrea

Oct 17, 2011 10:05 AM in response to Allan Eckert

Hi Allan,

I run 10.7.2 and I'm using Firefox 7.0.1 to open the page. My MacBook is from Mid 2010, i5, 4 GB RAM, 15 inch. gfxCardStatus tells me, that the Macbook uses the nvidia graphic card, when I get the BSOD. When I choose to use the intel card in gfxCardStatus only, then I don't get a BSOD but the grafic on the page looks distorted.

Interstingly I don't get a BSOD every time when I open the second effects page of Photo Booth, but I can reproduce the problem, when I open the App Store. Another thing that works is, when I opened iTunes and the computer comes back from sleep.

Oct 17, 2011 11:54 AM in response to francois-vda

You know an interesting turn of events could be predicted after reading most of this thread and Apple's acknowledgment of the problem (solution still pending).

Looks to me that there are many users on this thread that have reported their BSOD problems being solved once their logic-board had been switched out.

Supposing Apple does figure out in the end that a solution implemented in software alone won't solve the problem for everyone, and DOES acknowledge that the logic-board switch must be a part of the solution - What do you think will happen at that juncture?

Naturally there will be a run on Apple stores with an impossible to meet demand materializing for new logic-boards, prompting Apple to put in more orders for logic-boards, prompting FoxConn to go into overdrive, which in turn raises the probability for increased number of defective logic-boards being manufactured due to over-worked laborers - in the end we end up with defective logic-boards on the market again.

So don't you think NOW is the time to go ahead and try to have that logic-board replaced for free (some people have reported not being charged for the replacement despite their expired warranties), before the demand skyrockets?

Oct 18, 2011 11:50 AM in response to bobsterbobs

bobsterbobs asked what I did to get the problem fixed.

1.) My Mac crashed everytime I tried to preview h.264 encoded video using the Quick Look feature of Finder.

2.) I did a clean install of 10.6.8 and downloaded four full HD trailers from the Apple trailer site (in order to eliminate any third party software/files from the whole process) and copied all the crash logs I had collected back onto the machine.

3.) I took the MBP to an authorized reseller, showed them the crash logs, turned off "Graphics Switching" in Settings and after that quickly flicked through the trailers in Finder using Quick Look.

4.) As expected the MBP crashed within seconds of the demo. I repeated the process two more times.

5.) The reseller filed a warranty thing with Apple and replaced the Logic Board free of charge. At this time the MBP was almost 2 months out of "regular" warranty (see below).

Two things I have to point out:

A) I went to a reseller in Germany where Apple usually provides free repairs (within two years) for these kind of defects--even though "regular warranty" ends after 12 months.

B) At the time the reseller contacted Apple there was nothing to be found in the knowledge base about this problem. Now there is an entry that says Apple is working on a fix.

Oct 19, 2011 8:16 AM in response to francois-vda

Same problem here, MBP 15" i7 mid-2010.

Started occasionally on Snow Leopard, and became unbearable on Lion.

Got to this post after first interaction with Apple Care.

At second interaction they aknowledged the problem, and said that a fix is in the works.

I asked the customer care representative to note in my issue case that I am ok to wait a little to get a fix, given that using gfxCardStatus circumvents the problem for the time being, but that beyond a certain limit I would only accept a swap with a different model, cause the issue will hinder my business (e.g. not being able to do a powerpoint presentation on an external screen !)

Oct 19, 2011 10:29 AM in response to lpisati

lpisati: I AGREE WITH YOU 100%. I feel your frustration since I am going through the exact same problem.

I have to (I have no choice in the matter) to use an external monitor for group work, knowing full well the system will crash at ANY time, (which it has - only my twitchy "saving" literally Saved the Day).

Its really pathetic (actually an EPIC kind of pathetic) that I spent extra money on a machine that sells itself on its OS and machine's build quality and reliability, only to be constantly on the lookout as to when its going to inevitably crash.

Wanted to upgrade to Lion, but I have decided to completely hold-off on that since Lion exarcebates the problem. I thought there was enough sandboxing inside Lion to prevent this kind of total crash (at least I read that somewhere).

What's really funny is that I am looking enviously at my colleague who has a 2008 MBP running Lion plugged into iCloud!! What a crappy way to luck out. Usually you luck out because you have a newer model of ... pretty much anything!!

Here is a post (if you guys havent already seen it) where there is a link to CNET article where apple has FINALLY acknowledged this issue...

I am not able to use the gfxCardStatus workaround as I have a secondary monitor in DVI and the integrated graphics processor only seems to work with the main display.

Keeping my fingers crossed for apple to provide a fix!

Oct 20, 2011 3:34 PM in response to francois-vda

I hoped that the OS X 7.2 upgrade would fix this BSOD problem, but alas! Fortunately my 2010 15" Macbook Pro is still covered by an extended He education warranty, so I phoned up Apple technical support and explained that - after trying everything - I could only work with gsfx status installed and set to 'integrated only'. He urged me to bring the machine in and Apple would 'fix it'. I shall follow this advice, without much confidence, and will report back on the result. I am completely fascinated to learn what lies behind this glitch, but I guess that will remain a secret, until it isn't.

Oct 20, 2011 11:31 PM in response to bobsterbobs

As I wrote earlier in this forum: I got an USB to DVI-adater ( http://plugable.com/products/uga-2k-a/ ) and together with gfxcardstatus, my external monitor work fine, not a single crash! as long as I stay with Snowleopard. Lion crashes before gfxcardstatus kicks in but after that it works. The adapter is a bit slow and not as cristalsharp as the NVIDIA but OK, sceenshots doesn't work and sometimes firefox refuses to open a new window. I recomend it, it's better that any crash...
