Frequent Panic NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100

I've sent my MBP i7 mid-2010 for repair with the following frequent and intermittent kernel panic to no avail: panic(cpu 2 caller 0x9cdc8f): NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100: ... to no avail.

I happen to have subscribed to AppleCare for this machine but this did not make any difference. The approved repair center I dealt with just reformatted the HD per Apple's support instructions (twice !) and were unable to reproduce the panic. I called the Apple support folks in Ireland directly with the incident # and got told that there was basically nothing wrong with my machine and that this was bound to be caused by non-Apple software (mind you, the support guy I talked to didn't even know that XCode was an Apple product - sic). I however believe this is very likely due to a faulty NVidia video card on the logic board.

Has this happened to someone else? How did you get resolution? Right now I am stuck with an unreliable machine and seem unable to get it fixed. Any help would be VERY appreciated.

Thank you,

François

Well, I originally thought update resolved the problem, but I just experienced it again. It's definitely way less frequent but has happened to me once tonight. The stack trace is slightly different than before:

Really hope Apple is still looking at this.

Mike140, if you're still experiencing problems after applying the fix, I would suggest you seek service from Apple, as indicated in the KB article. One of the Mac sites, perhaps MacWorld, also stated that Apple would address this problem up to two years after the factory warranty expires, but I don't know where they saw that. At any rate, Apple knows of this issue and it couldn't hurt to have your notebook serviced. Just let them know up front that it is a known issue and you were instructed by Apple, via the KB article, to seek their assistance.

I set gfxCardStatus to "Dynamic Switching", then quit it, stopped it from loading at startup and made sure that automatic graphics switching was enabled in System Preferences. I've been using it thusly for the past two days and haven't had any blackouts or BSOD's. We'll see if everything keeps going well, but today I played Assassin's Creed II for a while and had no problem with the GPU (I've "stress tested" it with all the applications I could think of). Hope this helps.

Oct 29, 2011 2:31 AM in response to bobsterbobs

Okay. I do have Bootcamp installed and haven't experienced any panics while booted to Windows (not even under intense GPU usage). However, the issue reappeared yesterday for the first time since I installed the video update. It's only happened one time, though, and while booted to Lion. Here's the stacktrace.

I'm considering wiping out my hard drive and performing a clean Lion installation. Don't know why, but I feel like installing the video update as the very first thing might help at getting rid of any malicious reminiscences of the issue. Will try if it happens again.

I bought my 15inch core i7 Macbook pro about 8 months ago from US... in the last 20-25 days a problem showed up... The screen of my laptop just goes black but the keyboard light stays on..after i turn it off pressing the power button there is also a small "Click" Sound.. when i start again there is this message that my Mac has been shut down unexpectedly... and there is this huge list of threads but one of the key words that catch my eyes are.. also i managed to find a pattern..this happens everytime i start using macbook after it was in Sleep mode...and also while while using some critical softwares like iMovie or Motion 5... i took it to the only Apple service centre in my country..they installed my OS again and did some hardware inspection and told me everything was fine...the nothing has changed.. what to do??

Oct 29, 2011 11:08 AM in response to Ashhab21

NVRAM stands for Non-Volatile Random-Access Memory, meaning it stays after your computer is rebooted. It has nothing to do with this issue as far as I know.

About Bootcamp, many users (including myself) have experienced the very same type of kernel panics (screen goes black, keyboard backlight stays on) while running Windows, so I guess you're lucky if this doesn't happen to you.

Are you running Lion? If so, have you upgraded to it recently? The issue only started happening to me after installing Lion (it also started happening on Windows at that point), and going back to Snow Leopard fixed it for both Mac and Windows. Very weird.

Oct 30, 2011 4:16 AM in response to ianmartorell

No iam still using snowleopard, but iguess now that i think of it, th problem may have surfaced after i updated my OSX to 10.6.8 although i am not sure about it.

So far changing to Integrated Graphics have worked, no Panic since then. I just restarted my NVRAM and PRAM with the combination Command-Option-P-R keys... now going back to Dynamic mode...lets see if the sutuation imporved

Oct 30, 2011 6:46 PM in response to francois-vda

Update:

I installed the latest Lion update. I installed the Video Pro update. The computer downloaded both updates, restarted, installed both updates, restarted... and crashed again. I powered it down, turned it on again, set it to Dynamic video card switching, opened Photo Booth, played around with it, and it worked fine. Played around a little more, and no crashes. Went into iPhoto, played around for a little while, and no crashes. But after another 20 minutes or so of using iPhoto, panic again.

So, I took it down to the Apple store again. I showed the Genius the Apple article acknowledging the problem. He was very friendly and helpful and told me they would go ahead and replace the logic board free of charge (I am a few months out of the one-year warranty period). He actually told me that he had the replacement part in-house, but that he recommended sending it out for repair at the central depot because that was the recommended action in their computer system. We both agreed that it was likely that Apple had decided to do so because there have been other cases in which replacing the logic board did not solve the problem. The theory we both (independently) came up with is that those computers might have been "fixed" with a logic board from the same defective bunch, and that Apple is now replacing the logic boards with brand new boards from a more recent, and hopefully fully functioning bunch.

I should get it back this week. I'll let everyone know what happens.

Btw, has anyone been having problems with iPhoto crashing when you try to import photos? I saw that there is a new patch for iPhoto 11 that might resolve this issue, but I don't have my computer to test it. Anyone know anything about this, and whether it might be related to the same panic issue?

Thanks for everyone's input, and good luck!!!

Hi guys,

Jumped right from page 1 to page 23 on this thread, so pardon me if someone already posted about this, but it seems that all of you guys but Farkas007 regularly boot in 32-bit mode. Have you guys tried booting in 64-bit mode, just for the sake of trying, either by holding the 6 and 4 keys on startup, or by using this little (free app) called "32- or 64-bit Kernel Startup Mode Selector" (here, free, does what it says: http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/32252/32--or-64-bit-kernel-startup-mode-selecto r)?

Good news (so far; knock on wood):

Got my MBP back! And it's working great!!! So I took it to the Apple Store on Friday, and yesterday they called that it was ready for pick-up; so Friday in, Tuesday out. I picked it up this morning and have been updating all my photos in iPhoto. No crashes whatsoever so far. I went into PhotoBooth and played around for a while also, without a hitch. Have not had the iPhoto crash problem either (apparently the latest update fixed that problem).

They changed the logic board, replaced a cable and replaced the AirPort (my MBP was also having issues with the Bluetooth). All for free. And everything seems to be working great.

So I recommend everyone take their MBPs to their nearest Apple Store, and point their geniuses to the Apple article concerning this issue. You should be able to get your MBP fixed now. I'll let you know if any problems recur.

Remember to back-up before you take your MBP in!!!

Now that is what I call 'really good' news neldyn. I was awaiting your reply and turns out you delivered!

Okay folks there you have it. I guess, Apple takes its time, but eventually they do come around. I have read many posts where people publicly swore off Apple products, never to buy them again in the future. I guess they all might sing a different tune now.

Thanks all once again.
