Frequent Panic NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100

I've sent my MBP i7 mid-2010 for repair with the following frequent and intermittent kernel panic to no avail: panic(cpu 2 caller 0x9cdc8f): NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100: ... to no avail.

I happen to have subscribed to AppleCare for this machine but this did not make any difference. The approved repair center I dealt with just reformatted the HD per Apple's support instructions (twice !) and were unable to reproduce the panic. I called the Apple support folks in Ireland directly with the incident # and got told that there was basically nothing wrong with my machine and that this was bound to be caused by non-Apple software (mind you, the support guy I talked to didn't even know that XCode was an Apple product - sic). I however believe this is very likely due to a faulty NVidia video card on the logic board.

Has this happened to someone else? How did you get resolution? Right now I am stuck with an unreliable machine and seem unable to get it fixed. Any help would be VERY appreciated.

Thank you,

François

I had the same problem with 15 inch MBP mid 2010 snow leapord. Apple replaced logic board and havent seen the problem in 4 days. Upgraded to Lion and still working fine. So, it looks like for me it was a hardware issue. I started seeing this problem after 8 months of owning MBP.

I think the real Genuieses are here in these forums... thanks everybody 🙂

MacBook Pro Mid 2010 i7, Hi Res... I was one of those that had infrequent panic attacks... the patch seemed to solve my problem, inasmuch I could not trigger it by opening the App Store application and poking around... that said, yesterday I had my first panic attack since the patch. This time it panicked after I attempted to wake it from sleep. A little ominous, I am hoping this isn't the start of something. So, I guess the question is, did the patch really work, or like the proverbial finger in the dike, was it a temporary fix?

Nov 14, 2011 1:19 AM in response to Hamdani Milas1

Hello Hamdani Milas1. Is your MacBook Pro still within warranty? If not, how much is the charge? I visited Apple Store Hong Kong today and they tried to adjust some settings in my MacBook Pro that hoped to solve the problem.... and the answer is just answered by my Mac.... still the same problem. Mine warranty is expired and they told me the logic board cost ~HK$4100

Nov 17, 2011 10:47 PM in response to francois-vda

After ten days without the cursed BSOD under heavy usage, I feel reasonably confident that the problem has finally been solved by a LB replacement wiith the new part number noted in other posts.

It has been a long, twisted odessy and I count myself as very lucky that I was able to get the LB replaced for free. I fully expected that the "test" was going to pass and leave me pleading for compassion. Fortunately, the Apple store was experincing network issues and the Genius was not able to get the test to run. After a few failed attempts he just ordered the board.

Like so many others, I found that the patch drastically reduced, but did not eliminate, the BSOD occurances. Clearly, the Apple engineers don't have the solution fully in hand, so it should come as no surprise that the test doesn't appear to be valid.

How much longer will this situation drag on? What does it say about Apple's comittment to provide excellent customer service? If, after all this time, a reliable fix has still not been developed and there are truly a "small number of affected MacBook Pros", then why not simply accept the kernal panic report as evidence sufficient to warrant repacement of the Logic Board?

Stonewalling undermines customer loyaty. Enough said.

Sigh. Same problem here -brought on by a new logic board needed to repair a faulty USB port. : ( I keep taking the MBP back to Apple and they insist it's a software problem. I applied the patch last night -and my computer crashed within two hours... I'll take this thread in with me. Hopefully another new logic board will do the trick...

Jan 3, 2012 10:33 AM in response to francois-vda

I've had the same problem. I took my Mac to the Apple's store, they replaced the logic board, and I've had my Mac back for a week without freezes. Liberating!

They were not aware of this issue at the Genius bar, and showing them the kb article made everything run smoothly. It took them an hour to confirm the problem, and another 24hrs to replace the logic board once it was in stock. Go Apple!

The Geniuses drive me batty. My total time in the store was 3 hours, for the known problem with a known solution. It should have taken 45min for someone who knew what they were doing.

Jan 4, 2012 8:09 PM in response to atotic

I took mine back to the Apple Store last week -and just got it back this evening. They ended up replacing both the logic board and the RAM. I've only been up and running a little over an hour -but so far, so good. Knock on wood...

I pointed out this thread, and another about faulty RAM, to the genius at the store. He took the time to read some of the posts, and then went to a kb article and read that. Then, boom! -He announced that they'd be replacing the logic board. The RAM was a surprise -but a pleasant one. I think they went with the "better safe than sorry" approach.

I will be so pleased ot get back to normal -and to have a reliable computer again.

Jan 4, 2012 11:15 PM in response to finniii

After the patch I still had kernel panics, randomly. Finally had time to bring it to Apple Store here in Paris. Spent 10 minutes @ Genius Bar where they were perfectly aware of the issue. Proposed immediate motherboard and memory swap. Said that they jhave a new motherboard revision that fixes the timing issue, but that memory could be an issue too, as Intel on board graphics card uses RAM and there can be a timing issue when switching from one card to the other.

Anyway, they ordered the piece. Gt a call couple of days later, brought it in. They told me 3 days max to repair. Three hours later they called me that repair was done, to come pick up. And since then it seems to work without any problem!

Apple Store service was remarkably efficient.

Jan 12, 2012 2:06 AM in response to oliviern

Sure, I went to the Opéra Apple Store. Just take a RDV online or on the iPhone "Apple Store" app (they usually have a couple of days line)

Then just show them the MBP and tell them you installed the 10.7.2 and you still have these kernel panic issues after the patch. If your computer is under warranty and is a MBP 15" i7 Mid 2010 they should take it in for repair.

You should keep at least one log to show just in case (after you have a Kernel Panic and you reebot, it asks if you want to send info to Apple. Just copy and paste the backtrace into a Text file and keep it with you)

Good luck

An Applestrophe :

| Prologue

We have purchased Apple products for 20 years.

And employed them in the creation of award winning programs, music, videos and films.

Among our purchases is a mid-2010 Macbook Pro 2.66 i7

| Count Down

As everyone else here present, we noticed regular kernel panics NVRM errors,

such that the laptop became unusable, save for superficial tasks.

We telephoned Apple Care in the USA and they opened a case pertinent to Apple Bulletin TS4088.

We were referred to Apple Care in Germany as we are presently working on a project there.

Apple Germany referred us to Theile Computer in Heidelberg, Apple's authorized reseller

and service center in the region.

| Catastrophe 00

During mid-January 2012 we took the laptop to Theile Computer, whose technicians promptly

informed us that the mid-2010 Macbook Pro's are NOT eligible for any service bulletin repairs.

Despite Apple Bulletin TS4088 having been released several months prior,

Theile Computer's technicians hadn't the slightest idea that it even existed.

After familiarizing them with TS4088, they confessed they hadn't a clue

which diagnostic test to run.

| Catastrophe 02

The following day, we again telephoned Apple USA who assured us

that they will take care of the problem.

They issued a CS code so that Theile Computer could bill Apple for the repair.

The following day, we again took the computer to Theile.

This time, the technician assigned to the job wasn't even present.

When inquiring when he would return we were provided a sarcastic:

Sometime today ... or tomorrow.

We filed a complaint with the store's manager.

| Catastrophe 03

The following day, we again telephoned Apple USA who again expressed their sincerest apologies,

yet added insult to injury by insisting that the solution to the problem lies with us ...

In other words, the general disregard and incompetence of Apple Germany and Theile Computer was our responsibility.

| Catastrophe 04

The following day, we again called Apple Germany and spoke with Thomas S.,

the Customer Relations manager referred to us by Apple USA.

Thomas S. also expressed Apple's sincere apologies and assured us

that the problem would be taken care of.

But, he said ... _WE_ WOULD HAVE TO PAY for the diagnostic tests and the repair.

Thomas S. - Apple Germany Customer Relations: "This is Germany and we do things differently".

We asked Thomas S. to consult Apple Bulletin TS4088.

| Catastrophe 05

We again called Apple USA and informed them that Apple Germany

asked us to pay for the diagnostic and the repair.

Apple USA once again warmed our hearts with their sincerest apologies

and assured us that the problem would be taken care of,

but, insisted that ... we quote,

Apple USA: "The solution lies with you"

We smiled.

| Epilogue

We smiled at the magical bankruptcy of the "New and Improved Apple"

and decided that the solution does indeed lie with us.

Consequently, the entirety of Apple's magical comportment and treatment of its customers

will be documented in a short film entitled:

APPLESTROPHE [TM]

-

We will never again purchase an Apple product

A company that doesn't comprehend that its customers are its greatest asset

is an exquisitely magical failure.

Dear Apple242,

where can I purchase tickets for the premiere screening? Your story reminded me a lot of mine, which was even more bizarre: I had to go to the Apple store at least a dozen times, all the while the Apple Care hotline guy guaranteed me I'll get a new MBP if the next reapair won't fix the problem, then budging out again with all sorts of lame excuses; people who were assigned to my case disappearing; spending hours and hours on the phone with Apple Care Germany (which is actually Apple Care Ireland, they don't have people in Germany.). Them telling me over and over again it's MY FAULT (the "solution lies with you" rings quite true). This was before Apple officiall acknowledged the problem, but I could reproduce the error @ the Genius Bar. They wouldn't care. At one point, they even told me my MBP has water damage (after they repaired it 10 days earlier!) and wanted to charge me. "Either you pay, or we check your MBP out again unrepaired and you can wait for another appointment". I stormed into the Apple store, and - magically - after two hours, they a) figured my MBP does NOT have any water damage, and b) couldn't figure out who called me. All the tech guys denied phoning me ... After I had my second new logic board, touchpad and keyboard would stop functioning every once in a while. They had me first a) take out my SSD and then go up to the Genius bar again, when they figured I installed my own memory banks, so they had me b) exchange those and go up to the Genius bar again, when they figured I installed software on my Harddrive, so they c) formatted it with a fresh set up of OS X and would finally acknowledge they screwed up so exchanged the logic board for the third time. Lucky for me - ALL the problems went away. And the MBP ran as smooth as ever. But - oh boy - the many hours and discussions it took me to get there ...

Jan 17, 2012 9:58 AM in response to ollimuc

The interesting thing is there isn't actually an official genius bar in Ireland. They've outsourced to another crowd. AppleCare couldn't actually give me the address to get there when I called lol.

One of the biggest disgraces is that they charge 350e for AppleCare in Ireland. They charge 350$ in the US. When you register with it online they ask you to select a country!!
