Frequent Panic NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100

I've sent my MBP i7 mid-2010 for repair with the following frequent and intermittent kernel panic to no avail: panic(cpu 2 caller 0x9cdc8f): NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100: ... to no avail.

I happen to have subscribed to AppleCare for this machine but this did not make any difference. The approved repair center I dealt with just reformatted the HD per Apple's support instructions (twice !) and were unable to reproduce the panic. I called the Apple support folks in Ireland directly with the incident # and got told that there was basically nothing wrong with my machine and that this was bound to be caused by non-Apple software (mind you, the support guy I talked to didn't even know that XCode was an Apple product - sic). I however believe this is very likely due to a faulty NVidia video card on the logic board.

Has this happened to someone else? How did you get resolution? Right now I am stuck with an unreliable machine and seem unable to get it fixed. Any help would be VERY appreciated.

Thank you,

François

Hi,

last week I downgraded my MBP to Snow Leopard again. Since then, even with very demanding usage of NVIDIA graphic card, I did not have any crash. As I wrote in my previous post the problem is with the NVIDIA driver which is not available for Lion. In case of any HW issue the problem should come out with Snow Leopard as well I think.

I Think at least that this is the case for my MBP, probably not the same for others.

Any opinion?

May 21, 2012 2:44 AM in response to CodeNemo

Hi CodeNemo,

Maybe ...

As you may have noticed in the messages that are part of this thread, we all had Panic even with Snow Leopard. It was just a lot less frequent, like a crash every day instead of a crash every 5 minutes.

I believe the issue that is discussed in this thread is a real hardware timing fault that could not be corrected just by drivers. That's why the boards are replaced with new hardrware revision.

May 21, 2012 2:59 AM in response to lpisati

Hi Ipisati!

yes, I agree that for a similar problem different factors can be the origin. I am just stating my personal situation.

I tried myself many times an HW check using the 2nd DVD which came with my MBP but I never got a failure.

Before upgrading to Lion I had maybe 1-2 panic screen/reboot (in 14 months) BUT no black screen. It is not as good as with the first MacBook I had but kind of acceptable.

With Lion I had very frequently black screen (3-10 times/day depending on usage) in particular when running some applications/games.

What I can for sure say is that the Apple service in Darmstadt (close to Frankfurt in Germany) was completely not satisfactory. They just claimed money for applying a "solution" (clean re-install of Lion) I had already tried by myself and I even told them! Which such a "clever" service (like a rubber wall) and also considering that my time is more important than a stupid OS and I just downgraded to SL.

Cheers

May 21, 2012 3:09 AM in response to CodeNemo

Hi CodeNemo,

it looks the same issue, then, although on mine I had way many more crashes on Snow Leopard too, usually one every day, or every two days, but then it can depend on which software you run...

Just a question, is the Darmstadt center a real Apple Store or a third party ? Because if it is not an Apple run Apple Store I would NOT trust them at all for this type of swaps ...

I see there's an Apple Store in Frankfurt, did you try to get it there ?

May 21, 2012 2:15 PM in response to lpisati

Ipisati - while I understand your perspective, it is unacceptable that one _must_ go to an Apple store.

Apple would then have to pay for one's inconvenience and expenses.

Apple guarantees that 3rd party authorized centers are providing the same level of service and competence as Apple stores.

This issue is a known manufacturer's defect. Apple is entirely culpable for the problem and must repair it,

entirely at its expense, with minimal inconvenience to the customer.

In our case, Apple Germany has been an utter and complete nuisance, and complete waste of Apple's resources and ours.

Advice - travel across the border from Germany (eg. France) and have the test and repair performed in _1.5 hours_.

Sue Apple Germany for the expenses incurred.

May 21, 2012 2:54 PM in response to lpisati

And that's part of the problem. Apple is sitting idly while their authorized centers' incompetence and outright neglect

is destroying their reputation.

It is not the authorized service provider that is legally responsible for the damages and expenses incurred, but Apple Germany.

Apple will of course wake from its stupor and address the problem, but by then countless people will have already walked away frustrated and disillusioned.

In the case of Germany however, I must tell you, our experience has been otherwise.

Both Apple Germany and its authorized service providers in the Heidelberg / Frankfurt / Stuttgart region were absolutely horrendous - Think Torture.

May 21, 2012 10:51 PM in response to apple242

I went twice to this famous Apple resell shop (authorized service provider) in Darmstadt and both time the outcome of the test they did with their specific tools was negative, no failure.

What in that shop was really frustrating for me was that they said they did not know about this issue and that one must not believe e.t. is written in the forum in internet!!

For them many hundreds (thausand) of people complaining for the same problem was something new! I call this incompetence.

Anyway, after almost 1 week back to SL, no black screen anymore. System is running nice and smoothly.

May 22, 2012 12:02 AM in response to CodeNemo

Codenemo - same exact experience here, not in Darmstadt, but in 3 German towns, inclusive 2 authorized Apple centers and one Apple store.

Incompetence does not begin to express the state of ignorance and utter neglect.

And that's after Apple US intervened and told them what to do.

100km across the German border, 1.5h later, sensible, courteous and informed discussion - logic board replaced.

Apple Germany needs a swift legal kick to wake it from its backwardness, incompetence and general somnolence.

It isn't the customer's responsibility to educate Apple Germany about Apple's official Technical Bulletins.

May 22, 2012 12:21 AM in response to apple242

Hi apple242,

becauce I was quite upset with them (euphemism) I could consider to re-install lion and go again to the shoop in Darmstadt with in my hand the Apple Bulletin TS4088. I can reproduce the failure inLion within minutes. Just run a game. Actually I do not know what it can happen if I connect the MBP with an external monitor/TV.

Would they be forced to really solve the problem (i.e. change the hardware) even if there is no failure when they use their magic tools? I did not have this impression.

May 22, 2012 1:16 AM in response to CodeNemo

Unfortunately, after about 7 months of torture from Apple Germany, I can tell you with near certainty

that they will do absolutely nothing even if you replicate the problem 100x in front of them.

I made the computer crash within seconds countless times. Utterly irrelevant for them.

Just like the service bulletins they know nothing about.

I showed them the bulletin in 3 languages - they were astounded that such thing existed.

This is months after Apple made it public. Until Apple USA got involved they were even

adamant that I pay for the test.

And as you said, they have no clue what test to run. That's why their 'test' requires countless hours or days

and across the German border it's 1h and they replace the board even if the test passes,

so long as you show them the problem.

We went to an Apple authorized provider in another country to have the board replaced - absolutely stress free,

all done _quickly, correctly and courteously_ with no down time whatsoever, as it should be.

Night and day difference with Apple Germany.

My advice would be to get it resolved across the border so you regain full functionality,

and then optionally sue Apple Germany for the expenses, loss of use and inconvenience.

Sooner or later Apple US will have to update Apple Germany to Apple standards.

The current state of things is unsustainable and succeeds exclusively in destroying

Apple's reputation and the goodwill of their customers.

May 22, 2012 1:49 AM in response to CodeNemo

Strasbourg is fine.

Please note that I had gotten Apple USA involved beforehand (I'm American and my computer is an US model) and they had already issued a CS (customer service number). The service center uses this number to order the part - this lets them know that Apple will pay for the part + repair.

Unfortunately, Apple Germany could care less about this.

I would call Bemac in Strasbourg and tell them about the problem.

Unlike Apple Germany they know about the bulletin.

Some of them speak English but speaking French helps.

You can also escalate the matter with Apple USA if necessary.

May 22, 2012 3:53 AM in response to CodeNemo

No issues - as I explained to Apple USA - they really need to step in and sort this out.

The 'service' one receives from Apple Germany is a disservice to Apple and its customers.

Technically, Apple Germany should be able to give you a CS number, but in my experience they won't.

You can contact Apple USA also - explain to them what you and others are going through

with Apple Germany and ask that they step in and help you repair your computer.

Tell them that you already went to authorized service providers in the area and they don't know

about the bulletin, they don't know what tests to run etc. Tell them that your computer is unusable,

frequent blackouts, NVRAM panics as described in TS4088.

So long as it fits within the params of TS4088 they should issue a CS number.

Ask them to confirm this and how long the CS is valid for.

Then, when you contact Bemac or another provider tell them that Apple already

issued a CS number and you would like them to order the logic board,

so that when you bring your computer in, they can finish the job promptly.

You can also ask Apple to make a note that the provider should preorder the part

so that you are not further inconvenienced - eg. if you travel to Strasbourg you cannot

leave your computer there for a week and drive another 300kms.

The provider may state that they cannot preorder the part - they actually can keep

the part in the shop for 3-5 days, so you can set up the appointment and they can order it

1-2 days before. Generally they receive the part in 1 day.

If necessary you can request that Apple pick up the computer at your residence,

transport it to a suitable provider, replace the logic board, and bring it back to you.

Ultimately, don't let the uninformed and archaic arrogance of Apple Germany obfuscate the matter - you paid for a fully working computer and Apple is obliged to repair it to that standard, with a minimum of inconvenience to the customer.
