Frequent Panic NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100

I've sent my MBP i7 mid-2010 for repair with the following frequent and intermittent kernel panic to no avail: panic(cpu 2 caller 0x9cdc8f): NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100: ... to no avail.

I happen to have subscribed to AppleCare for this machine but this did not make any difference. The approved repair center I dealt with just reformatted the HD per Apple's support instructions (twice !) and were unable to reproduce the panic. I called the Apple support folks in Ireland directly with the incident # and got told that there was basically nothing wrong with my machine and that this was bound to be caused by non-Apple software (mind you, the support guy I talked to didn't even know that XCode was an Apple product - sic). I however believe this is very likely due to a faulty NVidia video card on the logic board.

Has this happened to someone else? How did you get resolution? Right now I am stuck with an unreliable machine and seem unable to get it fixed. Any help would be VERY appreciated.

Thank you,

François

Hi apple242 & CodeNemo plus all,

Sorry to hear that gfxCardStatus failed for you, CodeNemo. Here is list of my 4 most recent MBP 17" Mid 2010 with Snow Leopard panics...notice the first one is a different error and the last one after the longest interval happened only while gfxCardStatus was set to Integrated only. So this means the problem is more widespread i.e. not only confined to the NVidia logic board interface.

I'll be testing-out the Australian version of Genius support for this matter in a few week's time but so-far, I've heard of no one (of 3 verbal queries @ work) with valid Apple Care being rejected. Mine, however is a different case but within the 2-year support window that applies to 15" MBPs.

I don't understand how the interval is calculated. It's not date-time but probably operational time only.

I wish Apple would update their support bulletin to include the 17", then I would have an easier time convincing the Genius rather than pulling out the spec-sheet to show them how identical the 15" and 17" Mid-2010's are.

Hi!

last week I had a black screen issue also with SL so I decided to re-install Lion and let it crash again.

Today I went again to the Apple Repair centre in Darmstadt to get the issue solved!

I had with me the TS4088 in german. At the beginning the technical staff was claiming that the previous time they solved the problem. When the MBP froze twice in from of him he eventually changed his mind.

Firtst he tried changing the RAM, again the MPB froze. After that he decided to run an Apple hardware test (what did he run the previous time then???). He took a good 40 minutes.

Result: Logic board to change!!

They will do for free and I even got the money back for the previous attempt they did (clean re-install of Lion).

I think they realized they did a mistake last time.

I will get the MPB next week. I let you know if this finally solved the problem!

Cheers

I'm another disappointed mid 2010 15" mbp user having the same issues with nvrm panics. Please add me to the list Apple as there appears to be an ever increasing number of us that have been sold dodgy machines! And at nearly 2 grand, I feel pretty p***ed at a company I used to respect!

All in all it's been about a year since it first started. Sometimes it would be weeks between crashes, more recently it has become several a day sometimes.

The genius at my local store dismissed it (as many people have already reported on this thread already), I'm out of warranty, and need my machine for work.

Thankfully i didn't upgrade to 10.7 as i wanted to wait for the bugs to be ironed out. It sounds like I was right as I believe it has got worse for people who did upgrade. And my card is the 330m, which seems to be the same card as pretty much everybody else on here.

I can't offer much help to anybody (possibly removing the 'windowserver' file in preferences helped, but who knows yet), but I mainly just wanted to stand up and be counted so that Apple see how many of us have been let down by them.

Hi guys I'm also having the kernel panic/black screen problem, not only with skype but also when hooking up my machine to an overhead video. It blacked out twice in a row, pretty embarrasing while I was giving a keynote speech at a university. I was forced to use someone else's older 2010 model instead.

Is Mac just ignoring us here and is it safe to say the genius bar will not help?

Jun 29, 2012 3:43 PM in response to apple242

Interesting, I went to Apple store in Houston Galleria. They ran the diagnostic on the 25th of June, detected the error on the board and took in MBP 2010 15". Today, I got back the machine, and in the work order, it shows that it replaced "logic board 2.4Ghz" with item number 661-6360 (guess not as new as yours, ending in 6362). The point is..now the boot process is extremely slow, and Apple Genius considered that as normal. *sigh*

At least the repair is free though. Hope it does not introduce more issues.

Jul 4, 2012 2:16 AM in response to francois-vda

I've decided to post my panic reports every time this happens (although, as it happens so often, i might end up spending more time on here than doing the work i switch my mbp on for in the first place).

It may be a bit boring for general readers but maybe it'll help to make apple sit up and take notice.

for the last 2 mornings, when i switched my machine on to start the day of work, it's gone almost straight to the black screen/lit keyboard/fan sound/unresponsive state. no 3rd party software has been launched as there wasn't even a chance to do so.

tomorrow (or next time in crashes today) i will reboot without my (old style) hd cinema display attached to see if that helps - even though i've 'been there, done that' before.

Jul 4, 2012 3:44 AM in response to CodeNemo

thanks codenemo,

the 'black screen' problem was what i first thought my problem was.

i took my machine to the local genius bar and apparently my mbp was made just before the batch that apple/nvida are accepting have the problem, and therefore called it a 'software issue'. of course, that doesn't strictly mean it isn't the same problem, but it does mean that apple aren't currently recognising it or accepting it as a 'known issue'.

not knowing wherelse to turn, i googled the 'nvrm read error....' which led me to this (and a number of other similar) discussions.

i'm travelling to china with it next week (hope it holds out on me and it doesn't end up crashing and making me look stupid - or worse, loosing everything!) but i think i might get an extended hardware test done, as you suggest, soon after my return.

otherwise, i guess we just have to hope apple is paying attention to all of us that have given them a lot of our hard earned money........

Jul 6, 2012 1:58 AM in response to francois-vda

wow! managed a whole day without a crash yesterday.

powered up without my external monotor connected for the last 2 mornings. obviously worked fine yesterday, and worked for about 5 mins this morning. then i dared to open a word document and - blip - gone.

only other programmes launced were mail and safari....

here comes the report...:

Apple knows about the problem. It's a graphic switching issues on this particular machine. Major problem if you always use an externam monitor like me becuase I'm using a lot of video ram. The Genious specifically needs to test the graphics on this machine and it will fail. The machine needs to be returned to Apple for a full motherboard replacement. Not something they can fix in the AppleStore because they want to document the problem better at Apple. That's only 5-7 days of down time you have to live without your computer 🙂.

By the way, on my machine, the Bluetooth is flakey and often does not work with my mouse, and the DVD player no longer reads disks.

Again, i did not have a hardware issue. If you do, only a test will show. But, if in your instance the problem is also caused by software and not the described hardware issue, a clean reinstall, with secure-erasing the hard disk upfront and _NOT_ restoring any backup, library or preference file, then chances are good you will not see it again.

Please dont forget to redownload OS X Lion from the AppStore (there are quite some descriptions in the net) and create a bootstick from it. The first versions of Lion (10.7.0 and 10.7.1) i found particularly unreliable on this laptop plus the problems i saw would persist after upgrades (even combo packages), whereas the problems did not even show up in the first place when installing with a Lion media version 10.7.3+
