Frequent Panic NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100

I've sent my MBP i7 mid-2010 for repair with the following frequent and intermittent kernel panic to no avail: panic(cpu 2 caller 0x9cdc8f): NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100: ... to no avail.

I happen to have subscribed to AppleCare for this machine but this did not make any difference. The approved repair center I dealt with just reformatted the HD per Apple's support instructions (twice !) and were unable to reproduce the panic. I called the Apple support folks in Ireland directly with the incident # and got told that there was basically nothing wrong with my machine and that this was bound to be caused by non-Apple software (mind you, the support guy I talked to didn't even know that XCode was an Apple product - sic). I however believe this is very likely due to a faulty NVidia video card on the logic board.

Has this happened to someone else? How did you get resolution? Right now I am stuck with an unreliable machine and seem unable to get it fixed. Any help would be VERY appreciated.

Thank you,

François

Yes I use a Logitech bluetooth mouse most times. Could this be the possible problem with it? I will pay attention to when the next time it crashes and whether I was using the mouse at the time.

Also, mind telling me how you identified it might have to do with Logitech Control Center Software from the kernal report?

Is this from the part "last loaded kext at"? So i can analyse the past few kernels myself rather than needing to post here everytime.

I plan to update to Mavericks soon. What is the best approach to this for a clean install? If I install it, and then use Time Machine to restore my user, would that be considered a clean install without bringing in any of possible problems?

Oct 26, 2013 3:07 AM in response to bishibashi

Yes, your report tells us that following kernel extensions have been installed. They could all be related to the crashing. As this thread explains quiet early, you should try running your mac without any 3rd party kernel extensions before going to Apple.

com.Logitech.Control Center.HID Driver 3.7.0

Obviously The Logitech Control Center, one version behind. Current is 3.8.

Personally I don't trust any Logitech Software. Your BT mouse should work without it.

com.bresink.driver.BRESINKx86Monitoring 9.0

Don't know exactly which one of Bresink's tools it is but it shouldn't be necessary. Check the version number.

see http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1553654

com.paragon-software.filesystems.ntfs 100

NTFS for Mac® OS X 10. One version behind. Doesn't support Mavericks.

at.obdev.nke.LittleSnitch 3876

LittleSnitch firewall. That's one of the few I also use. Keep it updated! Latest Mavericks compatible version is 4052.

My advice would be to:

1. Update all of those to the latest versions

2. If that didn't help, uninstall them one by one and see if it helps. Main suspects to me would be the LCC or Bresink's tool.

THANKS MrSparkle. Your post sums it up.

I had the same issue: 2010 mbp black screen with read error. Brought it in to Apple store genius bar. They know of the issue and if the VST utility shows FAILED, then they will replace the logic board containing the faulty Nvidia chip for free. However, your computer must be within 3 years of date of purchase. Mine was 3 yrs 2.5 months. I talked with a manager and stayed calm and courteous. Eventually, he agreed to have it repaired and waive the charge. Bad thing is you have to send your computer away for 3-5 days.

Note that the Apple techs seem to think I should have received a notice from Apple about the Nvidia chip problem and explaining the 3-year window to seek repair. They did not have an email or address on file for my laptop though I purchased directly at an Apple store. However, I haven't noticed people on threads like this mentioning they received any kind of recall or warranty notice.

So 2010 mbp people with random black screens and freezes, go asap to Apple store before your 3-year window runs out.

Nov 13, 2013 5:53 AM in response to somecoder

I certainly had my mid-2010 MBP registered with Apple, with email account. When my logic board was finally diagnose/repaired, it was a few months after 3-yr window. BUT, as I had mentioned before somewhere in this thread, I had brought the laptop into another Apple store earlier, but they didn't diagnose it correctly (and I hadn't researched the problem thorougly). When it WAS diagnosed (at a different Apple store, after my insistence to perform the test), I was able to get the new logic board, as they did have records of my earlier problem.

What is the point of "registering" one's computer if they don't send out service notices?????

Nov 19, 2013 7:53 AM in response to Atewerf

Atewerf-

The VST test is for a specific "latent defect" in the graphics chip that was manufactured into a small run of the MacBook Pro 15" 6,5 2010 model. If that test passed, you do not now nor will you ever have a chip with that defect.

The overnight test is used to look for ordinary failures in your MacBook, such as those that may have developed during its life. Like so many diagnostics, it finds many gross errors but may not find more subtle ones. Failing the test means you have a real problem. Passing the test does not give you a clean bill of health.

Some kernel panics are caused by third-party add-on software. Apple will not help you debug your system problems unless it is an all-Apple System. (They do not want to spend their corporate resources debugging other people's software issues.) Your panic report shows that you have added a third-party kernel modification. This could be causing instability.

com.Cycling74.driver.Soundflower 1.5.1

Another common request is that you make adequate Backups (TWO in this case) and Erase your Hard drive and reload a clean copy of Mac OS X, as a hedge against damaged Mac OS X and wacky drive problems. [This also removes third-party kernel extensions completely.]

If (after running an All-Apple system for a while) you continue to have kernel panics with very similar panic-reasons in very similar places, you may have a graphics subsystem failure. [You may have a problem that is simply difficult to catch in the act.]

If instead (after running an All-Apple system for a while) you find that you have kernel panics with a variety of panic-reasons in a variety of different routines, that is a NON-Trend that may indicate a RAM Memory problem.

If the kernel panics continue, you could pay to replace some components yourself, or move back to an older version of Mac OS X that is not so graphics-intensive.

Nov 19, 2013 8:09 AM in response to Atewerf

Hello Atewerf,

this exactly happened to me, so when I left the macbook for the tests in the service, it passes well the VST, thank's the technichian has goodwill, he understand there was an error, because kernel panics really happends almost every day and someting was wrong, so he keep the macbook and tried to reproduce the error by using a while the machine, a few days after he was able to reproduce the kernel panics more than once, that was enougth to change my motherboard, since the replacement I've never seen a kernel panic again, defenitly was the same issue described here.

Before this I also tried with another HD from my other macbook and I can see also happened, so nothing has to do with the OS or HD was affecting (kernels starts when upgrading form SL to ML).

I suggest you to insist that there is an error similar to the one described here, and that not always the VST detect it, like in my case. Otherwise try another store.

good luck!

Nov 19, 2013 11:45 AM in response to Atewerf

your stack trace is a little different than the ones from my mbp. My crash stack traces matched pretty closely to the first few in this thread. You might try searching for threads on crashes related to "muxcontrol". As a guess, that might be related to your webcam if your crashes occur mostly when the webcam is in use.

Also, in this thread, there's a system preference described which disables the computer from switching to the graphics processor. That's a workaround which avoids the GPU crash, so you might check that your GPU wasn't disabled like that to hide the problem.

good luck. One thing the Genius Bar tech said to me: How come you didn't come in right away when your computer was crashing. Perhaps it was b/c years of exp. using non-Macs jaded me into the reality that crashes are not unusual and years of attempts at working with customer service jaded me into thinking they will always say it was something I did anyway. In any case, from his perspective at least a Mac crashing is unusual and that's where you're supposed to go to have it fixed. My case was only resolved after politely and patiently getting a manager to review, so be willing to work through their first response.

I am having the same problem but on a

Retina, Mid 2012

Processor 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7

Memory 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

Graphics Intel HD Graphics 4000 512 MB

Software OS X 10.8.5 (12F45)

It started infrequently seemed to occur more frequently when an external monitor is connected. Now it happens very regularly with no external periferals connected.

The screen or screens go black. Keyboard continues to be lit. Cant do anything but a hard power reset.

When I run the extended hardware diagnostics it occurs while the tests are running about 10 minutes into the tests.

Does anyone else see this on a 2012 Retina running mountain lion?

Dec 23, 2013 2:31 PM in response to Grant Bennet-Alder

I'm having roughly daily GPU Panic crashes on my mid 2012 Macbook Pro Retina 15" running Mavericks. It is not under Apple Care but is still under a one year extended credit card warrantee. I took it to an authorized Apple Service center (not an Apple store) today and they ran hardware tests with no faults found. Unfortunately the estimate the wrote said "no fault found but can replace GPU board" which won't cover a repair - sounds like elective surgery. I'm frustrated as **** - the several daily crashes are very real to me. Any ideas what to do?

This is a typical crash log -

aaah - now we are getting to the heart of the matter. The actual owner of this computer is my 19 year old son who is a CS major. He's the one complaining about the panics. So maybe he's using virtualbox rather than Parallels - I've no idea why he would put a keylogger on his computer - I didn't. I thought he was using Parallels to run a Win7 session so he could use Quartus 2 but he may have decided on virtualbox instead. So probably yes to both of your last two questions.

Dec 23, 2013 5:33 PM in response to Peter Lorraine

The current version of Virtual Box appears to be 4.3.6

That alone could be the cause of the panics, as there would be graphics Drivers involved.

--------

If you complain to Apple, they set you on this road:

Re-Install Mac OS X to make sure it is all there and working. If no relief:

Make two Backups and erase the drive, then Re-Install Mac OS X to make sure it is all there and working, (and since the drive was erased, no third-party kexts interfering with its operation).

This process also rewrites many blocks on the drive, so a few Bad Blocks may be spared out in the process.

Uninstalled logkext and virtualbox - crashed again as follows:

That certainly looks like a graphics failure.

Can you get access to an Apple Store instead of the AASP you used before? They sometimes give the Genius Bar guys more room to make judgement calls about when repairs are appropriate. If you can, take copies of those Kernel panic reports.

Apple Authorized Service Providers (AASP) have to follow tighter guidelines to make sure they are not just inventing repairs to enrich themselves.
