Frequent Panic NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100

I've sent my MBP i7 mid-2010 for repair with the following frequent and intermittent kernel panic to no avail: panic(cpu 2 caller 0x9cdc8f): NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100: ... to no avail.

I happen to have subscribed to AppleCare for this machine but this did not make any difference. The approved repair center I dealt with just reformatted the HD per Apple's support instructions (twice !) and were unable to reproduce the panic. I called the Apple support folks in Ireland directly with the incident # and got told that there was basically nothing wrong with my machine and that this was bound to be caused by non-Apple software (mind you, the support guy I talked to didn't even know that XCode was an Apple product - sic). I however believe this is very likely due to a faulty NVidia video card on the logic board.

Has this happened to someone else? How did you get resolution? Right now I am stuck with an unreliable machine and seem unable to get it fixed. Any help would be VERY appreciated.

Thank you,

François

For those of you with this issue, how often was it crashing?

At one point it seemed to be crashing every couple of minutes.

I read somewhere else to first try the 10.8.4 combo update and to disable automatic graphics switching.

I've tried both and for now it seems to be stable. Still, I made an appointment to see the Genius Bar on Monday. I guess I'm looking into plan B's just in case it doesn't work out. I'm currently in Beijing and I'm not sure how up to date the staff is there, although this particular store is in an area with a lot of ex-pats.

Oct 6, 2013 11:00 AM in response to francois-vda

I have just had my logic board replaced, and the VST test shows a PASSED result with the work done. (Thank you MrSparkle75!)

Will the newly replaced logic board now continue to function properly into the future?

That is to say, can any of you speak to whether once the logic board and GPU replacement is accomplished that the problem is 'fixed' and will not return?

Oct 6, 2013 11:17 AM in response to J A Bohrer

The problem that caused the recall is a latent defect that was always there in a certain revision of graphics chips. When the software is updated to 10.8, the problem becomes much more obvious, and the diagnostic was written to catch that specific defect. Once those defective chips are replaced with ones that do not contain the defect, that exact problem will not recur.

But it is possible for your graphics card to fail in some other way -- that is the nature of these electronic systems.

Oct 6, 2013 1:27 PM in response to Grant Bennet-Alder

Ha ha ha, well put, Grant.

I really didn't find anywhere in these articles that the defect had been corrected. I simply had the impression some chips were defective, some not, and the logic boards containing defective chips were replaced with other boards with GPU's that were simply defect free. No one had mentioned that later GPU's have a corrected chip on the replacement boards.

I will hope that the (most likely refurbished) board that has been placed into my machine contains a chip without said defect and simply allow me to continue working...

Thanks for the reply.

Yup, same story here. A couple months ago I took my 2010 15" MacBook Pro into the apple store. It failed the video test. They replaced the logic board for free. Now a couple months later my mac hasn't had a single issue. Not a single kernel panic or "your computer has restarted because of a problem" message. The logic board replacement fixed the issue.

I have exaclty the same card in a Mid 2010 Mac Book Pro. Same problem now here after 2,5 years of use...

yesterday 5 crashes in one day. the months before only recently craches. one crash in 2 weeks.

running on Lion. sadly I cannot find my original install disc to run the hardware test 😟

seems I need a new MTB or a new logic board 😟

Oct 15, 2013 1:04 AM in response to SK-Sly

The fault will show up when you upgrade to 10.8 or higher. If you are getting crashes under 10.7 (Lion) then it isn't the same issue. Of course that doesn't mean that you don't have the same underlying hardware fault being discussed here and if you ever plan to upgrade to 10.8 or higher you will need to get it fixed so better to go to Apple now before they cancle the replacement program.

You can't run the VST test at home, it isn't included on the install disks, it's only available at authorised Apple repair centres. See my original post; https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3114550?answerId=22052441022#22052441022&ac_cid=tw123456#22052441

Make sure the Apple Store Genius knows about this problem. Some don't.:

After I had briefly researched this problem on my 2010 Mac, I went to a store in Boston, mentioning that I had been getting kernel panics ever since I had updated to 10.8.x, and that I had heard there was a problem with my particular modle MacBook Pro. I wasn't very specific at this point, but had done a bit of research.

They kept the Mac and did some sort of long overnight test, and other diagnostics, but not the VST. They could'nt find any problems. I kept getting the panics.

Brought it to the store one more time and I can't exactly remember what they said/did, but the gist was that it was probably, a software/system issue (since I had upgraded to Mountain Lion!), and that I'd have to eventually wipe and reformat my drive and then re-install all apps. (They said that a straight restore from backup might re-instrduce the problem).

I researched the problem further, knew exactly what it was (these forums are great), and decided to go to another, smaller Apple Store in a mall outside of Boston. I had an awesome tech, who listened to my description and what I thought the problem might be. He knew about it, and did the VST test right there and then, which showed the failure immediately.

My MacBook pro was a few weeks out of warranty, but, because I had orginally gone to first Apple store just 3 days out of warranty, they decided to fix this for free.

Because of this forum, I have a new logicboard. Thank you!!!!!

Oct 26, 2013 2:19 AM in response to Grant Bennet-Alder

After diagnosis from the authorized technician, this time they found no fault with it, it passed the VST test.

As before, my logic board has already been replaced twice within last few months by them. But now it stil crashes randomly.

Here's the Kernel from the most recent crash. Is this still the same problem?

I hope i can finally rule out its a hardward problem now, and perhaps just do a clean install since I have yet to upgrade to the new Mavericks?

Your panic report shows us, thay you have various 3rd party extensions installed. Get rid of them first and see if that helps. At least make sure you have the lastest versions installed (which you should do anyhow if you want to upgrade to Mavericks). At the moment I would suspect the Logitech Control Center software. Do you use an external BT device when the crash happens?

Since my MB got replaced for the 2nd time and included the SSD (MBP Retina), machine runs without any problems again. I wouldn't be surprised if I had two different problems. First defective Nvidia chip and then the repair place (authorized reseller) that switched the MB made some mistakes during the repair, which caused the SSD/MB problem. Second repair was done by Apple directly.
