Frequent Panic NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100

I've sent my MBP i7 mid-2010 for repair with the following frequent and intermittent kernel panic to no avail: panic(cpu 2 caller 0x9cdc8f): NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100: ... to no avail.

I happen to have subscribed to AppleCare for this machine but this did not make any difference. The approved repair center I dealt with just reformatted the HD per Apple's support instructions (twice !) and were unable to reproduce the panic. I called the Apple support folks in Ireland directly with the incident # and got told that there was basically nothing wrong with my machine and that this was bound to be caused by non-Apple software (mind you, the support guy I talked to didn't even know that XCode was an Apple product - sic). I however believe this is very likely due to a faulty NVidia video card on the logic board.

Has this happened to someone else? How did you get resolution? Right now I am stuck with an unreliable machine and seem unable to get it fixed. Any help would be VERY appreciated.

I just swapped the logic board on one of these machines today. Apple was trying to blame software because of the crash log, it was the same as those posted here. The problem would occur when the graphics were being stressed, like games and the iTunes visualizer.

The machine would go black and the hard drive and fans would continue to run, it had to be forced off and would start right back up. All tests that Apple has for external use passed and no software, RAM or hard drive changes would affect it.

After swapping the logic board the machine runs fine. The video processor is the same as the old board.

changing the board will not necessarily do the trick - as written earlier i already had it changed twice, without solving the problem. Thinking back, I can say that it all started with the upgrade to OSX 10.6.7.

I just tried the workaround that Bill Kunz named in an earlier post: switch to the internal graphics using gfxCardStatus. I havn't had any crashes since (and finally get some real work done with this poor computer).

I've got this problem as well, and just had a horrible time at the Apple store dealing with it. They wanted to do a fresh Lion install and see if that resolved the problem.

Given this thread, and the fact that all the kernel panics happen in driver code, that clearly wouldn't have helped, and instead just wasted more of my time.

I'm going to try gfxCardStatus and/or go back to Snow Leopard until Apple fixes this. What a horrible bug to ship in Lion, they should be ashamed.

that's the point: The fresh install has been tried over and over again without yielding any results whatsoever. Apple wastes our time and energy. This is so draining it really p***es me off ... And yet they say "they have to do it". There are dozens of people now with the same problem - how many 100 or 1000s do we have to be in order to make Apple find a solution for us?

I've tried gfxCardStatus but it always switches to Discrete even if I set Integrated as an option.

I'm driving an external monitor with the macbook in clamshell mode. Is this there reason why the discrete mode is forced?

External monitors always flip the MBP into discrete mode, so no matter what you attempt to force it into, it will still run the NVIDIA when you connect to the mini-display port.

just when I thought the SMC reset fixed it for me - bamm - I got two panic shortly one after the other

I worked the whole day without a problem on my external monitor - now back to intel graphics and no external monitor :-(

hope there is a fix for this soon - otherwise I am gonna try that system board replacement

makes me think it is somehow temperature related? after it comes back after the panic iStats show temperature > 95° celsius

Temperature related? Ever since 10.6.8 my temp is going way up. GPU as well as CPU. Fans always running at 3500+. Could really be part of the problem.

Off to an Apple dealer now. Not that I expect they'll find a solution. But Apple won't talk to me anymore unless I've done this unnecessary step.

Decades of computing, Apple turned out to be the biggest time waster of them all. Sorry, but this has been my personal experience ... how saddening for a company that boasts itself for its customer satisfaction and product stability. What a laugh! Seems like this an era that's gone for a couple of years .... sad. I'd love to love Apple. But the way they treat their customers at the moment is unexcusable.

It seems like I can cause a kernel panic by doing either of the following:

1) Upload multiple files via FTP using Transmit v4.1.7 (Uploading single files doesn't cause it)

2) Download a file using Chrome v12 or v13 (Beta)

Maybe it's coincidental? Why would uploading or downloading files cause a kernel panic? Can anyone else verify that it occurs during either or both of the above activities?

There is a known bug with Chrome that causes it to switch to the discrete graphics card momentarily when downloading a file. It animates an arrow in the bottom left corner of the webpage to point to the file download triggering the switch.

I do not think the crash when using Chrome is from file transfers, it is more likely related to switching the active graphics card.
