Frequent Panic NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100

I've sent my MBP i7 mid-2010 for repair with the following frequent and intermittent kernel panic to no avail: panic(cpu 2 caller 0x9cdc8f): NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100: ... to no avail.

I happen to have subscribed to AppleCare for this machine but this did not make any difference. The approved repair center I dealt with just reformatted the HD per Apple's support instructions (twice !) and were unable to reproduce the panic. I called the Apple support folks in Ireland directly with the incident # and got told that there was basically nothing wrong with my machine and that this was bound to be caused by non-Apple software (mind you, the support guy I talked to didn't even know that XCode was an Apple product - sic). I however believe this is very likely due to a faulty NVidia video card on the logic board.

Has this happened to someone else? How did you get resolution? Right now I am stuck with an unreliable machine and seem unable to get it fixed. Any help would be VERY appreciated.

Thank you,

François

panic(cpu 0 caller 0xa22c9b): NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error

If you got this error with NO third-party kernel extensions loaded, it would correlate strongly with a Hardware failure. But yours has added extensions:

com.eltima.ElmediaPlayer.kext 1.0

com.Cycling74.driver.Soundflower 1.3.1

com.squirrels.airparrot.framebuffer 3

com.squirrels.driver.AirParrotSpeakers 1.7

at.obdev.nke.LittleSnitch 2.4.0

If you can replicate the failure with no third-party kernel extensions, you may have a graphics failure.

MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video

.

Not every Kernel Panic is the same. Some posters on this thread have different problems. If you have the panic-reason listed in the title, you should go to the genius Bar with this article printed out on paper in your hand:

TS4088- MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video

To determine if you have this same kernel panic, use this article:

Mac OS X: How to log a kernel panic

If yours is NOT:

NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100

then cut and paste one here for Readers to look at and help determine the cause, or start a new thread all your own with a catchy title and paste it there.

I had some issues like the rest of you with kernel crashes. Here's my error I had:

I might've solved it by doing this:

http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379

So far, every type of bug I had seen before isn't coming up. I didn't have to have the logic card changed - and my MacBook Pro is a 2010-2011 i5 with regular specs.

Fingers crossed, it works.

For owners of the MacBook Pro 6,2 MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010):

If you have the line in your Panic report shown as the title of this thread, you very likely have the Hardware error described in:

TS4088- MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video

Take a printed copy of that bulletin, as a hedge against technicians who are not familiar with the program, and make a Genius Bar appointment.

They need to run the SPECIAL diagnostic described in that bulletin.

If it fails the SPECIAL diagnostic, you should discuss having them replace you motherboard under that program.

Pleas make a backup before you hand over your Mac -- they may have to send it to a depot.

You have the same panic report and the same Mac Book Pro 6,2 that correlates with the Hardware probelm described in the article. Print out a copy of that article and take it with you to your Apple dealer. Ask them to run the SPECIAL diagnostic for this problem.

I thought I would try to write a post that sums up the process required to repair a mac suffering from this issue. In hope that it can get referenced every so often when new people come to the thread and ask the same questions over and over.

Step 1: Verify that you have been getting regular kernel panics with the error "NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100" and that you have a MBP 15" Mid 2010. If you do not have this exact combination then the following does not apply to you.

Step 2: Take your machine to an authorised repair centre.

Step 3: Explain the issue and ask them if they are familiar with the fault. If not get them to read TS4088 (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088) and look at their internal operating procedure OP555 which is available on the Apple GSX site (this will mean something to them).

Step 4: They should then run AST free of charge and perform the normal hardware tests. (AST - Apple Service Toolkit is a quick set of test that run in their own environment and is intended to find quick and obvious hardware faults. Eg, faulty temp sensors, fans that don't spin, etc.)

Step 5: After running AST they will have the option to now run VST. Run VST. (VST - Video Service Toolkit is available as a test that can be launched from the home screen within AST but only on machines that meet the requirement (15" Mid 2010 MBP) and only after the normal set of AST tests have been run and the machine rebooted.)

Step 6a: If VST reports a failure then they should organise a repair as per OP555 at no cost to you. (Assuming you are still within the time frame of the free repair offer, which is either 3 or 4 years from the date of purchase irrelevant of Apple Care status on the machine. Sorry I don't know for sure if it is 3 or 4 years.)

If you are interested to know what VST looks like when it detects the faulty Nvidia chip then here it is: https://www.dropbox.com/s/sku03qbz217iyqe/IMG_0273.jpg

Step 6b: If VST does not fail (prints a big green 'PASS'), then you have a different issue, you are not covered under the free repair program and you're on your own. Sorry 😟

So to sum up some common issues:

Do I need apple care? - No

Apple should fix this for free! - They do providing you actually have this fault and don't exceed the free repair offer timeframe. OP555 clearly states that the repair is to be provided for free!

My local repair agent is giving me grief! - Be polite, they may not know of this issue. Encourage them to read TS4088 and OP555. Ask them to run AST and VST to get a definite answer.
My repair agent couldn't run VST. - Either they didn't follow the process (steps 5 & 6) or your machine is not an eligible MBP 15" Mid 2010. If it can't suffer from the issue then VST will not be presented as an option to run.

What actually is this fault? - It's a hardware issue with the Nvidia graphics chip and cannot be repaired without swapping the logic board. It only shows up in 10.8 due to this version using the hardware differently which exposed the error.

I hope this helps clear things up and helps people get the service they are entitled to. 🙂

This will be the last Apple product I buy, the qualiy just isn't there anymore, I remember buying Apple products in the 80's and 90's and they would last for 10-15 years without any issues. That was always the reason why you bought Apple, because "they use top quality hardware". That all has changed I have a mid 2010 Mac Book Pro and it has had nothing but quality issues. Every Apple product I have bought in the last 8 years has had issues, from my iMac, to my Mac Mini and now my Mac Book pro. I took my Mac Book Pro in today and in big red letters after running the video test it said "Test FAILED, replace MBL".

I used my computer for coding and until recently haven't used any graphics intensive stuff so the "extended warrenty" ran out in April and I only found this issue happening maybe 2 months ago after I began using it for more than coding (using google street view to look at houses to buy). The person at the genius bar explained that they couldn't replace the logic board because it was passed the 3 year date. They wanted 527$ to replace the motherboard on a 3 1/2 year old computer which I paid 2700$ for. To date I have experienced all these problems with this computer:

Hitting this consistently now on my MBP mid 2010 - aware of advisory - MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010) intermittent black screen or loss of video Quality Program has ended - Apple Support for replacement of such Motherboards. and my mac allegedly was tested and told doesn't come under this 2 years back.

Does it mean that HW is somehow gone Kaput now or I am hitting same issue from advisory here. PS: This is a work laptop, and would be very unhappy if Apple diagonosed this wrong and said no even if it was to be corrected thryu replacement program.

Can anybody help seeing the core. (?)

You mean like this one... Re: Frequent crashes on my MBP and my "Hijacking" of this thread was only to let the community know that there had been another model of MBP that has suffered this fault. So you can go do what ever you like with that comment because I'm not impressed at all you rude person!!!!

He was very neutral in his response. Having a ton of different users trying to get advice from the same thread gets totally confusing to both the people trying to help and the people asking for help. You need a spreadsheet to keep straight who gave what information and who replied to which question.

it is one thing to point out you have the same problem and that the existing responses have helped you.

Or to start a new thread, and post a pointer to your thread in this one asking for assistance in your thread because they are the same.

But to expect clear help from a thread that is 51 pages long already, and the previous 51 pages were not helpful, is expecting a lot.

I’m sure I don’t have the same problems many of you have here. I don’t have the BSOD, BUT my MacBook Pro, i7, 8gb RAM, 2010 crashed multiple times daily for 3 weeks IMMEDIATELY after installing 10.7. It had not crashed once in the previous 15 months. By “crashing” I mean all of my applications would gradually go to a “not responding” mode over about one minute. The only thing that would work would be my mouse / cursor. It would always necessitate a hard re-boot. I couldn’t really point to one thing or another causing the meltdown.

I’ve been watching seven different threads dealing with “similar” issues and have tried almost all of the “solutions”. Haha…read HUNDREDS of posts. This will probably be my only post, so I’ll lay out my observations.

  • My wife and I have identical machines…hers is totally cool. I have a bunch of utilities and 3 times as much software installed.
  • I don’t think everyone has the same problem even though it might look identical.
  • New logic board fixed / didn’t fix…oh no thought it worked…guess it didn’t…WHAT? These are COMPUTERS, not infallible machines. I just switched over from 30 years on DOS / Windows. Apple is still just a computer (still take it over Windows). My last Dell took over a year and 6 bios upgrades before it didn’t crash connecting an external hard drive. There are thousands of possible software combinations…and YES…defective hardware too. I’m 58 and have lost weeks…maybe months of my life to imperfect computers.
  • SO…I Repaired permissions, SMC reset, PRAM / NVRAreset, used gfxCardStatus, Fan Conrol, cleared cache, removed all security software, deleted “windowserver”…Nothing worked. (Was too scared to install the Nvidia driver talked about…plus didn’t seem to work except forseveral people.)
  • I finally did a Command + R > Disk Utility…and Verified the Disk. OH NO…my hard drive has errors! Did I install Lion on a disk with errors? No one said to “Verify” your disk before installing Lion. I read like 5 different articles!! So I “Repaired Disk” several times until it showed no errors. Nothing…still crashing.
  • I resort to calling Apple (got the 3 year plan.) The guy has me do all of the above. I spend 1 ½ hours with him…his longest call ever he tells me. He tells me to re-install Lion, BUT DO NOT RESTORE FROM TIME MACHINE. I hang up and reinstall Lion from the internet (Command + R). I didn’t know it would wipe my disk clean!! I said screw it and restored from Time Machine…hey…I wasn’t going to spend another whole day manually bringing stuff over unless absolutely necessary.
  • Is this what people have been referring to as a “Clean Install”? Did you check your disk for errors first?
  • It has been 2 minutes now and it seems to be working…Haha…make that 2 WEEKS now. I didn’t want to post until I was sure what worked for me. I have 10.7.1 installed for several days now too. NOT A SINGLE CRASH IN 2 WEEKS!

I will post this into all 7 threads I’ve been following and maybe this will help someone. I hope so. But if it doesn’t I won’t be too surprised because you may very well have a different issue than I had. Good luck! I love my MBP again…
