Frequent Panic NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100

I've sent my MBP i7 mid-2010 for repair with the following frequent and intermittent kernel panic to no avail: panic(cpu 2 caller 0x9cdc8f): NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100: ... to no avail.

I happen to have subscribed to AppleCare for this machine but this did not make any difference. The approved repair center I dealt with just reformatted the HD per Apple's support instructions (twice !) and were unable to reproduce the panic. I called the Apple support folks in Ireland directly with the incident # and got told that there was basically nothing wrong with my machine and that this was bound to be caused by non-Apple software (mind you, the support guy I talked to didn't even know that XCode was an Apple product - sic). I however believe this is very likely due to a faulty NVidia video card on the logic board.

Has this happened to someone else? How did you get resolution? Right now I am stuck with an unreliable machine and seem unable to get it fixed. Any help would be VERY appreciated.

Thank you,

François

Since I have been experiencing the same things on my MBP I7 (2010) I thought I would give the timeline that I have been experiencing.

  • Machine was rock solid as of May 2011, did not renew Applecare
  • 10.6.8 update installed, occaisional black screen crashes began. I thought "software" and continued using machine.
  • 10.6.8 "Pre Lion: update installed, more frequent black screen crashes, made appointment at Genius bar and took in for diagnostics. Research online showed Lion install would allow me to create a crash, so I installed a fresh clean install on Lion and recreated the crash, felt good, headed to genius appointment where I could not recreate the crash.
  • Genius ran diagnostices, found nothing wrong with hardware, sent me home with machine. Arrived home, machine crashed within 10 minutes of use in Lion.
  • Called Applecare again, was told "you must pay for a service call", asked for supervisor, when transferred I got a dialtone.
  • More online investigation revealed that sending an email to the "Boss" might be the way to go. Letter crafted, sent, and response call from Executive Relations rep received.
  • Appointment made for logic board replacment.
  • Machine dropped off at local Apple Store, during the drop off, the crash was recreated (was nice to finally be able to show then what I meant)
  • Machine due back this Friday

Will update the experience.

Okay that was an exercise in futitility. But all hope is not lost ... I hope. 🙂

I understand what 'chimes' mean now. While resetting the PRAM I let it ring 4 times. After the 4th I released the keys.

  1. Set gfxCardStatus to "Discrete Only".
  2. Plugged in my external monitor, keyboard and mouse.
  3. Closed lid and let computer go to sleep. Woke it up again using the keyboard.
  4. Launched the test App .... and sure enough, crashed at exactly the same place, on cue.

So sorry to report this. Resetting PRAM did not work for me.

Going to wait on Apple.

Hmmm... I understand your antagonism against Windoze.

But if you read one of my earlier posts (at least in my experience) its ironic that BootCamped Windows can actually circumvent this problem somehow. I'm not sure how. I have recovered from several BSOD's on Windows that show the exact same symptoms as when booted into OSX (the Black Screen of course, and the audio stuck on a loop).

Everyone here please note: There are specific symptoms related to the bug that is being discussed on this thread (IMHO):

  1. The main screen (or external monitor, or both) suddenly blacks out.
  2. If you were listening to audio prior to the point above, then you will most likely hear a part of that audio stuck on a loop, as soon as your main display or connected monitors black out.
  3. The NVRM Read Error Panic log that shows up right after a forced reboot.

I am aware of only these many common symptoms. I am not sure if there are any others that exist. If they do, please do post them.

Hi CodeNemo & All,

The latest about my Mid-2010 17" MBP panic problem:

  1. Morphed into an Integrated (Intel) graphics tearing and distortion problem on the day I took it to the Genius (that's Murphy's Law for you😀).
  2. Genius saw this problem & verified that the logic board was the root cause. As TS4088 was only about the 15", the Genius was not able-to or allowed to endorse my MBP 17" for $free repair. Further, the graphical hardware test conducted did not show the problem. However, they noted the problem and referred me to Apple Care.
  3. Apple Care listened and agreed to further Apple Engineering assessment.
  4. Since 26/06, trying 2 versions of "Capture Data" software (the latter worked), the extended hardware test halted on error "4SNS/1/40000000:Tm0-60.125" and after 23 emails, I'm still awaiting Apple Engineering's assessment.

So all, I'm getting close to a conclusion to put a new logic board for $free. However, if this does not happen then the cost of replacement is around AU$700.

Hello!

It seems that I have the same problem. I got these kernels panics. At least once a week. I made an appointment at the apple store and they did the VST test. The test passed. They did an overnight test and no problems were found. They reinstalled my apple with mavericks and I just got it back. Is it possible that the test will pass but the video control is still broken?

Hi there,

I have exactly the same problem for last 4 days. I am trying everything deleting programs one by one but it did not help so far. I added some extensions for firefox browser and chrome recently . At first I thought they caused the problem. After uninstalling even browsers I have noticed that was not the problem. it still keeps freezing everything. Only thing I can do reboot the machine. This is really annoying. I have no idea. If anyone knows the solution please let me know.

Thank you.

Ali

Your kernel panic log appears to pinpoint several software components related to the graphics processing unit on your Mac. Have you attempted to run the Apple Hardware Test? You can do this by restarting your Mac and immediately holding down the D key.

Regardless of what the results are for the hardware test I would recommend getting in touch with Apple again and see if you are able to send in your kernel panic log via e-mail so that they can perform further diagnostics.

Hi there again,

Thank you for your reply. But I tried everything.I did hardware test. It says no error. Apart from one thing I have noticed when I did hardware test that I can see there under hardware section that processor type is intel i5. Actually I paid for intel i7 in the receipt it is written i7 and also when i check it from about this mac it is written i7. I dont understand why there is written i5? THis is something different any way.About the error I still keep receiving the same error again and again. What I did:

I run the mac in safe mode and it generated the same error after a while.

I have boot camp windows 7 so I run it for windows and I had the same error. It seems like a hardware issue. I booked an appointment. so I will take it to apple. Because it does seem that will not stop giving this error.

Thank you

Ali.

I have the exact same problem with my mid 2010 i7 MBP. It seems to be occuring regardless of what the software setup on the machine is.

Funnily enough are these the support guys in CompuCare on Grafton St? Useless they are. They told me precisely the same thing - that the machine was fine. In fact all they did was reinstall my boot camp drivers again and told me my laptop was working "so much better" despite me explaining what the problem was. I felt like I was talking to a brick wall.

Of course 5 minutes with it on and we're back to the same black screen of death. Fresh install of Mac OS and the issue still persists.

The feel I'm getting looking into this is dodgy NVidia graphics cards in some of these models... The question is who do we contact when our support point is inept?

Seeing same problem after upgrade to Lion today: no idea what to do but it pretty much renders the machine useless...

I am having this problem as well. I have a mid-2010 i7 MacBook Pro. I believe that I have had this occur before the update to 10.7, but the upgrade has made it far more frequent.

A guaranteed way of causing the crash for me is to open Google Chrome and attempting to download a file. After the "download arrow" animation plays the screen goes black and the system goes completely unresponsive.

I have run the hardware test disc, no errors were reported.

The error is not related to any third party software, it occurs on a clean install of 10.7 with no additional software installed. It occurred once during the welcome wizard and later immediately after logging into an account.

Restoring back to a time machine backup of 10.6 has restored some stability, but as I mentioned previously the crash has occurred for me in 10.6. The question is whether or not this is a hardware issue related to the NVidia GeForce 330M graphics card or an issue with the driver for that card.

Same problem here on my 2010 Macbook Pro 6.2. Crashes happen extremely randomly - sometimes within minutes of each other, sometimes after a week of smooth operation. Swapped main memory out, no effect Various apps running at time of crashes - some with basic OS apps like Safari. Kernel backtrace always points to the graphics driver code.

Bought this thing used 3 weeks ago, but it's too unreliable to use. Taking it back to the dealer - let them wait for Apple to get their act together - if they ever do.
