Frequent Panic NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100

I've sent my MBP i7 mid-2010 for repair with the following frequent and intermittent kernel panic to no avail: panic(cpu 2 caller 0x9cdc8f): NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100: ... to no avail.

I happen to have subscribed to AppleCare for this machine but this did not make any difference. The approved repair center I dealt with just reformatted the HD per Apple's support instructions (twice !) and were unable to reproduce the panic. I called the Apple support folks in Ireland directly with the incident # and got told that there was basically nothing wrong with my machine and that this was bound to be caused by non-Apple software (mind you, the support guy I talked to didn't even know that XCode was an Apple product - sic). I however believe this is very likely due to a faulty NVidia video card on the logic board.

Has this happened to someone else? How did you get resolution? Right now I am stuck with an unreliable machine and seem unable to get it fixed. Any help would be VERY appreciated.

Thank you,

François

... and another 2010 i7 MBP with the same issue. It's about time Apple did something about this.

I dropped of my MBP at the local Apple store since the Apple care guy hasn't responded to my last emails for a week. Will get a New logic board now, but no high hopes on getting the issue resolved. Here's the interesting part: The tech guy I turned my MBP in with actually acknowledged it's a KNOWN problem! According to him, it seems to be a bug caused by the GeForce gfx card running hot. At least in my case, he was spot on: Monitoring the temps, the GPU always seemed to cook up quite a bit - as did the CPU. This all came with the 10.6.8, before that, no probs.

Folks: Besides from the Kernel Panics, do you experience the MBP running hotter than usual as well? If you don't have temp monitoring installed, you can usually tell by the fans speeding up. And: When did your problems start? Mine started partially with 10.6.8, but the Kernel Panics just came with the new logic board.

Aug 5, 2011 12:31 PM in response to Martin Krzywinski

I don't think it's the heat. I don't think it's an application. I don't think it's kernel extensions added by Parallels or VMWare. I don't think it is anything but the GPU changing video status.

If you take your Macbook Pro into Apple to get it diagnosed for the problem, I reccommend removing everything but Apple products, because I've taken mine in twice and the Genius Bar tech wanted it to be kernel extensions, and then he wanted it to be third-party apps. I told him I did a clean install of Lion. I told him that I wasn't even running (application to be blamed later) but he said that didn't matter, "there must be an undocumented incompatibility with Lion" in the application, even if the application is reported to be "Lion-ready."

Also, they will diagnose the problem on the laptop itself without hooking it to a large monitor, which is a prime reason for the NVIDIA chip to kick in its graphics switching.

I don't necessarily blame the Genius Bar people for trying to point at non-Apple things. The problem is that there is nothing in their system about this problem, so they treat it (each time) like a new problem, rather than a known "oh, this is because the NVIDIA chip is having a problem with the Lion drivers (or whatever the real problem is)."

So keep reporting this when the error report pops up. Keep taking your machine in to get it fixed. I know that in my case, this started with Lion. I had no problems prior to that. I'm hesitant to go back to Snow Leopard because of the reports that 10.6.8 causes the same problem.

But I do not think the problem lies anywhere except the NVIDIA drivers/chip or the graphics switching.

Things I know can cause the kernel panic:

Downloading a file using Chrome (any version)

Downloading or uploading multiple files using Transmit (latest version 4.1.7)

Previewing images prior to opening one in Photoshop (latest version 12.1 x64)

I believe these cause the panic because they trigger the graphics switch.

It also happens frequently when I am looking at Mail, though I cannot pinpoint what I am doing when it dies.

Honkzilla, excellent advice.

I've asked the techs to replace the Logic Board right away. There's no need for "stress testing" or blaming kernel extensions installed by non-Apple software.

Also, it's important to stress this isn't a "single user" problem, but something many people are suffering from currently. I was really lucky today since the tech guy I talked to knew about the 2010 MBP GeForce prob. He just had the same case with another customer ...

If you wanna avoid the hassle of re-installing your entire system: Boot from an external drive with a fresh install of OS X - no additional soft whatsoever. If the system still crashes, they can't argue it's your own fault since this proves it's nothing you did to the OS.

In my case, the problems started happening AFTER I got a new logic board. This proves there must be at least some gfx cards that do work. As stated earlier, I suspect there must have been an internal update of the GeForce 330, causing this incompatibilty with OS X > 10.6.7.

It also seems to be problem not caused by the "switching" process, because my system is always on discrete gfx due to the external monitor. But it surely isn't happening when running "intel only" gfx.

Temperature seems to aggravate the problem, but surely isn't the only cause. I've started my MBP this morning after it cooled down and ... three crashes in a row. Bammm!

Another way to reproduce the error: Go to PhotoBooth and switch around the gfx efffects ... that helped me reproduce the error @ the Genius bar.

@Honkzilla: I doubt downgrading to 10.6.8 will ameliorate the problems since that's exactly the OS I'm running. I did want to upgrade to Lion, but after two crashes in a row when trying to download it from the app store, I took it as a sign from above *lol*

News about the problem at Ars Technica:

http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2011/08/buggy-nvidia-drivers-giving-2010-macbo ok-pro-owners-lion-upgrade-headaches.ars

And a link to a much larger/longer thread about this issue:

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3191083?start=0&tstart=0

A note from the Ars article:

A commenter noted that Apple Care support technicians have offered another solution which appears to have permanently solved the problem on his machine. Navigate to ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/, delete any files that contain "windowserver," and reboot the machine. The procedure may need to be repeated if you regularly connect to an external monitor once it is also connected.

Note that the user Library folder is hidden by default on Lion. You can get to it by holding down the Option key in the Finder's Go menu, use the Go To Folder command and paste in the full path, or use Terminal to make your ~/Library folder permanently visible.

...

I did not find the offending files on my machine. I'm not sure why they are generated or where they come from. I usually keep my MBP attached to a Cinema Display permanantly to get my work done. I definitely need that extra real estate.

I'm one of those who had occasional panics on Snow Leopard that became much worse on Lion, and have been using gfxCardStatus to force integrated graphics only (no panics in Lion since taking that step).

I tried the Ars Technica commenter's suggestion to remove the ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/ "windowserver" files (there were two such files on my machine); I then rebooted and re-enabled dynamic switching in gfxCardStatus. I got the panic within a half hour. I have since switched back to "integrated only".

Giving up, I've rolled back to 10.6.7 from a time machine backup. Surprisingly, it worked.

0. Backup user files from your system disk

1. During boot-up, hold Option

2. Select "Recovery Partition"

3. Select "Restore from Time Machine"

4. Select last save point before 10.6.8 was installed

5. Select the system disk for the restore target

Restore took 1 hr from a 1Tb WD to 120 Gb Vertex 2 SSD.

So far, no crashes.

Lion, shmion.

Aug 8, 2011 1:07 PM in response to Martin Krzywinski

I originally tried deleting ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/*windowserver* without success. I then had the logic board replaced under warranty after demonstrating the issue on a fresh install of 10.7 -- I'd recommend it.

I originally experienced this issue using 10.6.8, then Lion, and then just for completeness an older backup I had of 10.6.7.

Good luck.

Aug 9, 2011 1:16 PM in response to Martin Krzywinski

I've also given up the Lion ghost, as it were, and scraped the drive and reverted to 10.6.7. I got there by using the original OS disk that came with the machine (10.6.3) and using the combo-update (around 900 Mb). So far, I'm back to normal without a single panic or black screen of death.

I took my machine into the Genius Bar three times, but the answer I kept getting - no matter how much I protested or showed this and other threads about the issue and the Ars article - is that unless or until Apple says it's a problem, it's not a problem, and it "must be" something in an application, or another driver, or surely something I have done to my machine. I don't necessarily blame the Genius Bar employees because they have about an hour to work any problem and there's nothing in their database or knowledge base about this issue, so they can only suggest "the usual suspects."

I frankly cannot continue to use the mahine as broken as Lion made it. I was sending in all my reports, I showed them all to the Genius Bar, but the opinion was that there was "nothing they could do." So, uh, thanks a lot, Apple. Job well done!
