iPad dropped, now with red screen/background

I've had the original iPad for several months now, and it has been working fine. However, yesterday, the iPad was dropped (a couple of inches from the ground), and now the background screen is red. You can still see the icons and the iPad remains fully functional, except for the red discoloration in the background. For example, when you play a video, the letterbox is now red instead of black.

Has anyone experienced this before? I've synced it, but no effect. Don't want to try a full restore unless it's absolutely necessary. I've read on the net that it may be corrected over time?

Thanks in advance.

I just had the similar problem today, a very gentle TWIST ( do mean gentle, but enough). It seemed to have readjusted the ribons or circuitry to fix it. Im guessing the the thickness of the first gen ipads require a slap whereas the thinner more maliable ipad2 could endure an exremly gently twisting to adjustment. Every case will be different, but this is what worked for me.

Omg, thank you so much for this post!! I have had my ipad for almost two years now, and I have never had this problem before. I have dropped it a couple times but it never did the red fuzzy backround. Today I did not drop it either. I had not even used it for a couple hours, then I picked it up and it was like that. I was freakin out like you have no idea. I was already in the process of doing a factory reset (which did not solve the problem) when I stumbled upon this discussion thread. I was hitting it on the back while it was restoring and syncing to my itunes library, but it didnt work. After it was done though I hit it several times it didnt do anytjhing, and then hit it some more it wasnt doing anything. I put it down for a few minutes ready to give up but, when I looked at it a couple minutes later it was fixed. You are a life saver thank you again.

After having been advised by support staff at a local Apple store to just have the unit replaced, I decided to tap the back of my iPad out of frustration. It wasn't a light tap, but not a forceful one either. After several taps, the display normalized. Hard to believe, but it worked and now my iPad display has no signs of discoloration. It appears that dropping the iPad may have loosened or messed up something inside, which was somehow corrected by tapping the back of the iPad.

I'll be interested to know if this remedy works for your iPad.

LOL .... why wouldn't it work? It was a recommended procedure after exhausting all other alternatives or approaches on the 1G iPod Shuffle ....

Never had an iPod Shuffle, so I'm not aware of issues with that product.

Moreover, the issue in this thread is the iPad display/screen. So, one wouldn't readily assume that a fix for the *screenless* iPod Shuffle would apply to this particular problem for iPads.

Oh, so you think I need a reminder that the Shuffle was screenless? Or assumed I didn't know the topic of the thread?

Break the code, Jim ... the point was that when all other options are exhausted then sometimes the only things left to try are the off-the-wall, counterintuitive ones — sort of the 'get a bigger hammer' approach to things. Every once in a while, they work, much like the guy who discovered that the dishwasher actually was a pretty good way to clean a keyboard.

And of course, while the Shuffle was in fact screenless, it did share some other characteristics with the iPad: Extreme minitiaruzation for its day, very simple controls, relatively rugged construction, and the use of flash memory. Few would have recommended dropping or hitting a MacBook Pro, fewer still would have followed that suggestion.

Merely driving home the point that, just because an off-the-wall, counterintuitive remedy works in one case is not solid basis for an assumption that it will work in all other cases - especially when we're talking about applying a fix for a screenless iPod Shuffle to iPad display/screen issues. Your reply to my question (addressed to someone else BTW) suggested otherwise.

My iPad fell off the sofa (thankfully onto a carpet,) plus it was in a case.

Anyway, when I turned it on, red screen!

Major nuts!

Thankfully my son told me about this site and mentioned the slapping. sounds crazy!

Well I slapped the darn thing silly, found it sadly therapeutic

No joy!

my husband got in on the act, he slapped, then

he held the iPad about 18" above the carpet, screen on top.

then dropped it on it's back, Eureka!

it's a blooming miracle!

screen is fine again, I love technology when it's this basic!

OMG! I slapped it about 12 times and it worked. I can't believe this. I had a greenish fuzzy screen. I had dropped it flat on the floor -- I was surprised given that it had a case. Thank YOU! Other remedies I saw on ifixit required opening up the ipad and reconnecting something which I was skeptical about given my lack of technical skills.

THanks!I dropped my ipad and the colurs went all wonky with blue halos around evrything. Found this post, gave it a couple of whacks and Voila, the screen went all fuzzy like a lost tv signal and then came back almost perfect. Only the thing I notice is when an item is loading the bar that move across the page seems to have the head of a comet

OMG! My son just dropped my ipad2 and my screen turned red. I freaked out & was upset! We dont have an apple store out here, so I decided to check online and found your solution...I tapped it a couple times for about 5min and it didnt work, i was already getting impatient.LOL! So I put the case back on and dropped it (the back part of course) on my carpet twice...Nothing happened, I then Said to myself let me try the floor. So, about 3in. of the floor I did it again with the case on and what do you know, a Big SMILE on my face & telling my husband I fixed it while laughing as well to how I did it!!! I just hope nothing bad happens later. But, THANK YOU so much cuse it really did work ;) You saved me a trip to the tech & funds!!!!
