iPad dropped, now with red screen/background

I've had the original iPad for several months now, and it has been working fine. However, yesterday, the iPad was dropped (a couple of inches from the ground), and now the background screen is red. You can still see the icons and the iPad remains fully functional, except for the red discoloration in the background. For example, when you play a video, the letterbox is now red instead of black.

Has anyone experienced this before? I've synced it, but no effect. Don't want to try a full restore unless it's absolutely necessary. I've read on the net that it may be corrected over time?

Thanks in advance.

The slap back screen fix worked. My friend was given an iPad from family with a bad screen. I borrowed it to see if it was a software or hardware issue. After about an hour of looking into it, a new screen seemed in order. Well, after an hour break from researching the problem, decided to hit the web again. I am not a fan of Apple being in PC world for over 20 yrs. Finding this forum and this slap cure could be the beginning of my new positive iWorld experience. Thank you all for posting.

I tried and tried smacking my iPad on the back, and the fix just didn't work for me. But then it occurred to me that I should re-create the kind of smack it got when the display went bad. So I knocked my iPad firmly on its edge (which was how it fell in the first place) and the screen immediately reverted to its perfect state! We just have to remember these things are computers not books... I will definitely be more careful.

I was so scared of spanking it... but eventually it worked for me too! I locked the screen and spanked it firmly with my hand everywhere in the back against my lap, occasionally fliping it over until it finally went back to normal. I am SO amazed at the solution. Seriously, our iPad2 is as good as new again.

This remedy worked for my iPad 1! I cried when the pink/green fuzziness showed up. Although I didn't find the cure for it until after I accidentally fixed it by getting frustrated with it and started tapping on the screen. This remedy is ridiculous for something that is supposed to be super advanced :/ oh well. Glad it worked. Will not be dropping my iPad again any time soon.

Thank you so much! My iPad 1's screen suddenly turned red, as others have described. I tried the tapping many times, in many different places, with varying levels of force - to no avail. I put the cover back on and dropped it (screen up) from about 6 inches. Nothing. Finally, I used my entire hand to slap the back of the unit, over the cover. It worked! I couldn't believe it.

Thanks again so much for sharing this very random tip!

Noisy green screen, one firm slap on the back, problem fixed. Thank you so much! We are flying internationally in the morning with 3 kids age 5 and under, and no time to take the iPad to a repair store beforehand. The flights and layovers will go MUCH more smoothly with the iPad back in working order! I wish everything in life could be fixed so easily...

Jim71 - months later your trick still works! I have the first generation ipad and just left the 5th Avenue store refusing to pay $249.00 to purchase another first generation ipad! I found this post and decided to just tap the ipad a couple of times and what do you know! It fixed. My co-workers and I are absolutely amazed! This goes to show you - something is really wrong with these ipads. I didnt drop my ipad - so I assume this was just old age kicking in. It is time for an upgrade... 🙂

I kept dropping it intentionally when it first happened and then finally gave up, because nothing was working. I was ready to spend 300-400 dollars to fix this but then, I dropped it accidentally while watching a movie. I wanted to see the time and I was amazed at how clear things were. It was like the iPad was new again.

OMG - the slapping on the back thing worked for me too. I had to hit it about 3 times (firm but solid hits, not too hard) and to my amazment the screen went back on. My young son dropped ours this AM - I found this thread from a quick google search - using - "my son dropped my iPad" screen blank. Thank You all. My kids always break our stuff.

thanks sooo much, i dropped my 64gb ipad 2 (~1000$ worth [not including apps/music/movies) and had a red screen, i got a bottle of coke-cola (closest hard thing), put my ipad on the ground (dont wory, i have a screen protector) and wacked it a couple times, it still had some red, so i decided to wack it a few more times, and voila! no red screen.

PS: does anyone know why the red screen occurs? at 8.8mm, i thought there wouldent be any space for anything to fall off/apart
