iPad dropped, now with red screen/background

I've had the original iPad for several months now, and it has been working fine. However, yesterday, the iPad was dropped (a couple of inches from the ground), and now the background screen is red. You can still see the icons and the iPad remains fully functional, except for the red discoloration in the background. For example, when you play a video, the letterbox is now red instead of black.

Has anyone experienced this before? I've synced it, but no effect. Don't want to try a full restore unless it's absolutely necessary. I've read on the net that it may be corrected over time?

Thanks in advance.

This worked!!!! I can't believe it. My ipad was in a heavy duty case. It fell off the bed and I got blue screen and fuzzy wierdness. I took it out of the case held it about 8 inches off of the ground and dropped it on its back. It worked. Good as new...I tried rebooting. Before I re-dropped it and no good. I was sick. Then I found this post. dropping fixed it!!!!! Thank you.

Just had the samer issue and banging the back worked!!! I noticed that the spot that made it work was to the left of the home button (when looking from screen side) and up about 1-2 inches from the bottom and 1 inch in from the side.

Unbelievable. Im tempted to pop it open to see if thats where the video chip is or maybe a ribbon cable.

Wow I would like to thank you as I had dropped my iPad this morning only about 10 inches and it has a padded cover both front and back, it then turned Red - I took it to apple store and have made appt for monday then after googling and reading varies posts slapped it a couple of times but to no avail, then put cover back on and dropped it flat on hardwood floor and hey presto it is back to normal (at least i hope so!). I am flabbergasted but extremely relieved both financially and emotionally!! Once again a big thank you to this forum.

Today my IPAD 2 screen went haywire. It was flickering a myriad of colors. I thought for sure it was shot and was planning to take it to the APPLE store tomorrow. I went to this forum just now and found the responses to your original post, that said if you tap the back of the iPad really hard it would adjust itself. I did that and nothing happened then I thought to myself people who were attesting to this fixing the problem were probably having a laugh, but I persevered and turned it facedown on my knee and tapped the back of the iPad quite a few times as if I were beating a drum, turned it back over and ta-dah.... it worked so thank you thank you thank you....... My iPad is healed.... !

It worked!

I heard a loud thump last night when I asked my son to bring my iPad upstairs when he's on his way to bed. The background was red, some other features were a sea foam color, and there was a lot of reddish snow on the icons. I asked my son if he'd dropped my iPad and he claimed he hadn't dropped it...

I tried going to settings, read about changing the color in accessibility, tried it, but the screen was even darker and the red tint was still there.

I almost gave up, till I did a search on a red background on iPad. I tried tapping it about five times on the underside, but nothing happened. The surface was soft, so I decided to tap it on a firmer surface. I did a hard shut off by pressing the off button and square within circle simultaneously. Then, I placed a file folder on my table and tapped the underside of the iPad roughly ten times.

I turned it on, and I was back to a white apple on black background, as opposed to a white apple on red background!

Thank you!

Wow, thank you so much for this posting!! My 10 yr old son, dropped our Ipad2 in the garage on the cement and screen was blank. There was still sound but had a backlight/blueish black screen. I hit it a few times like I had read and still did not work. A few hours later, tried again, and the slide to unlock and time appeared then disappeared. Then hit it again and the Apple icon came on and it worked!! Amazing!!! You have know idea how upset and scared my son was, that he broke our Ipad and he would have to pay to get it fixed. Thank you!!!

The slapping technique does work on my iPad2, recently dropped approximately 4 feet onto a rug while in a protective plastic/leather case. But it now sort of oscillates between normal coloration and a "sepia-tone" effect. It's happening as I type this. I don't want to keep slapping it, or repeat the drop onto the floor for fear of permanent damage, but it's awful annoying that it keeps doing this. Any other suggestions?

Great thread, by the way. Thanks to everyone for sharing

Wow! Cant believed this smacking thing works! And it worked for me! After a pretty abbusive slap to the center back and sides it went on from a dead black screen! For awhile its was red and green coloration, then....another round of spankin! And voila! Back to normal! Wont let my kid dropped it again tho!!!! Cheers to the fix trick!
